Port Adventure looked serene. A place that would be good to hang out for a while, I guess. That sandfly avoidance technique for dinner, that was hilarious. Drive to the middle of the harbour just to avoid those blood suckers. Apart from the sandflies this seemed like the pick of the spots in the series. Orange marmalade, a now not so secret to deliciousness? That manuka smoked meat looked incredible. How did you decide which places to stop, and which to skip? Random? And you left out “yuck”, muscles on the beach. It was a long trip and I enjoyed watching every bit of it. Thanks for putting it all together, it looked amazing, except for some of those crossings, which looked terrifying!

Port adventure was awesome, wouldn't mind booking a hunting block there for sure! The sandflies there were actually not that bad, but certainly worth taking a break from in the bay 😂. Haha I didn't have any sugar or honey so that was the best I could come up with for the marinade, the orange tang turned out super yum. Campsite picking was part random, part weather-dependant, sometimes there were places that looked good but the beach was a bit rough or I didn't like it enough, sometimes I just needed to go far enough to get where I needed to :). Awesome memories, great to see Port Adventure and Abraham's Bosom..Lord's River, I spent 3 months there in 1997 Salvage diving on the Don Wong 529 that hit then foundered on Breaksea Island. Great place to be!

@@NZWildAdventures such an epic big trip, I would've probably extended the number of videos a bit, like 5 or 6 episodes instead of 3. Are you planning on going on any more epic diving or fishing trips next summer? I'm interested to see if you're gonna do more trips to banks peninsula southern bays. I have an inflatable too but usually just stay in the harbour coz the 15hp I have struggles to push me and my dive buddy Chris.

Hahaha I can't a milk a trip that much 😅. No plans yet, thinking D'Urville and Catlins at some point tho. Yeah bro gonna do lots more on Banks P hopefully! Well I have an 18hp motor which could propel 3 divers easy as, and my boat is out of commission for another month or two (cracked floor to be welded) so flick us an email if you wanna get us a collab going 😉

@@NZWildAdventures Yeah propelling 3 divers is kinda difficult to quantify coz I weigh 135kg, I'm one and a half divers :) I normally just dive 6 months a year, usually october to march over summer, coz the vis is aweful over winter thru most of canterbury due to the extensive and regular rainfall. The water down the catlins is pretty cold, but since you've already dived stewart island I suppose your wetsuit is already warm enough for it. I think the diving in the catlins is probably quite good though due to less population of people. I'll send you an email with my phone number, you should gimme a call tonight or tommorow night, or any anytime really in the evenings and we can talk dive plans. I do have a couple of other people I dive with and a couple more I have promised to take out at some stage. But something I've learned with diving is that it's very weather dependent... but whatever dive buddy you get sometimes depends on what they're doing too, my main dive buddy Chris sometimes goes hunting in summer so he's not always available for diving. The other thing is, there is also the potential to take 2 boats instead of one, this doubles the petrol costs but also means more divers can go. Again though, don't think too far ahead. The main thing I'm considering though for next summer though is prioritising motunau. Still haven't dived there yet. Last summer I spent too much time going to Akaroa and before I knew it, summer was over and never went to Motunau.

Great series. I wonder how many bugs get called sand flies, because we have something called “Lin talay” in Thailand, or a sand fly, but the bites are almost unbearable. Think a mosquito bite on crack times 10. Maybe they affect me more than others, idk. The cray bit was having glimpses of heaven on earth for me… near shore plentiful lobster right near camp no less!

Ahhh of course! Never crossed my mind for some reason 😂. Actually I've got this theory about the cats and kiwi. There are loads of kiwi on the island (every place I stopped had them screeching away in the distance), and plenty of cats (footprints at most places and I saw a few). So I wonder if the abundant cats catch and eat the stoats and rats which would normally eat all the kiwi, and don't eat the kiwi for whatever reason, leaving them to do well 🤔.... theory based on nothing ofc 😂. Cheers mate! I assume you mean hunting permits? I just got the open hunting area permit, and hunted the open areas between Doughboy Bay and South cape, and between outside port Pegasus and toward toitoi Bay 👍

As far as I could find out when I was researching it, it was fine to cross the hunting blocks to get to the open hunting area, so long as you don't hunt the blocks. Take that with a grain of salt though 😂 and always check in with the blocks' hut or campsite to chat with the block holders f they're in 👍. The whitetail mainly hang out on the coast though where the blocks are so crossing inland may not have that much luck on the main blocks. Cheers

Thanks Jake! It's an 18hp Tohatsu. Haha that's awesome, OceanNZs not the most reputable brand I've heard but mine goes pretty hard 😂. That's a good question, probably would be enough but there's really only one way to find out without a doubt. Mine has a 9inch pitch prop which helps a lot to push oodles up to the plane (more low speed oomph than 11 or 13 but lower top end speed). If it's a mercury 15 check if it weighs 41kg or 35ish, if 41 you may be able to easily modify it to 18hp with a simple part (as they're manufactured by Tohatsu). Cheers!
