Thats awesome im also 46 im beginning again . I played some in middle scholl but drumming is in my blood . My dad has playwed ever since he was a young boy . I remember falling asleep rt in front of the bass drum as he played very loud but even then i couldnt get enough . I couldnt have been more than 3 yrs old . But research shows we can learn at any age . Yes most of these vids only seem to be showing off what talent they have instead of trying to teach .

I love videos like this because it's putting to words concepts that I know and have been doing without realizing it. And now that someone has pointed it out, I can be much more intentional about it.

Stephen, I really appreciate such videos for beginners. It's really essential and helpful. For some people it might look too simple, but these are the building blocks towards the success. I can confirm that I struggle with fills. You're right I know some but I also need to learn how and when to use them. Also want to point out that knowing enough "vocabulary" really helps to feel more confident and from that point you can start improvising.

As a beginner, I find the explanation of musical phrases brilliant and extremely relevant. When I listen to music, I instinctively expect "stuff" to happen at the end of these phrases, but had no idea why. This is another great video - most appreciated!

Dude what an excellent resource! As more intermediate these days than beginner - yes I know some of this stuff already but it's great having it all in one place and so superbly presented. Lots of good stuff, not just a list of grooves and fills. Top man Stephen, one of the best out there. Cheers :)

I've been struggling with this very issue. Your explanation of 1/8th notes to 16th notes helped me. I was trying to start my fill with my weak hand and it was throwing my timing off and hard to work around the kit. Now that I'm starting my fill with my right hand I'm tearing it up. Still trying to get the timing just right on the Pat Boone-Debbie Boone. Great video and I have watched a lot. Thanks for making it simple.

Your lesson was very good on many many levels. So much, that I not only “liked” but also “subscribed”. If I could make one recommendation, especially for a guy like me who starting back to aware 1, it would be helpful if a “curser” could actually follow the bests along the bars. Technically I’m not sure how that’s done, but I’m sure it would help. Again, thank you for your clear explanations & emphasizing where to start from. Thank you.

Just a question, for those of us who have more drums (I have a 5-piece set as well as a Sabian B8 cymbal set with two crashes), can some of the tom or floor tom notes be substituted on other drums (other toms to more precise)?

I was once in a band about 10 years ago as a guitarist. We played big churches as well as bars/events with top 40 /rock songs too. Our drummer (of 40 years experience) was one of those guys that counted measures. My goodness that drove me nuts!!! He could play some really amazing but couldn’t really feel the music during a song. A super head scratcher here. It was a disaster when he was off by a measure. The band would have to jump forward a measure to catch up with him or repeat a measure til he caught up with us. Thank God it only happened maybe once during a gig. The point being; Pay attention to Stephen at the 13:00ish minute mark about feeling the time, the groove and the music.

Thanks so much for some really helpful simplicity! I am finding the pdf useful, but one minor annoyance. When you flip back from the sound bite, you're taken back to the beginning of the document. This is a bit frustrating, especially when you're in the later beats, its a long scroll/page re-adjust! Thanks again for some really solid learning! Dave

My struggles are with choosing dominant hand and foot. I'm ambidextrous but not in the typical sense. I throw a ball and swing a bat right handed, but I play hockey left handed. I also kick left footed. It's more comfortable for me playing high-hat with my left hand, snare with my right, and I prefer playing bass with my left foot (I use a dbl bass peddle), but can use my right. Instead of my ride being over my floor tom, I have my ride symbol just behind and to the right of my high-hat. Crash symbols on the back right side. Anyone else more comfortable this way?
