Great info! Thank you very much! Keep up the good work! It's needed nowadays since foraging is sadly a fading skill!

This is an awesome video... I used to see all these plants, growing up in New England... and saw them as weeds. I never knew some of them were edible... especially the invasive Greenbriar! Thanks for sharing!

This video was just what I needed. I found some black raspberries at my parents house and wine berries around my condo. I’ve also recently gotten the seek and iNaturalist apps and they have been very useful in identifying plants while out in the field. The info from this video will definitely help me identify more plants!

Glad to help. It's fun identifying the different types of raspberries and blackberries. For example I never even noticed how many dewberries are actually around until a year or 2 ago. now I see them everywhere.

Eat The Planet I tried some dewberries by my condo also but I didn’t think they tasted as good as the wine berries

@@cren110 Ya, Wine berries are some of the best. I know what you mean about the dewberries, still really good but not as good as the more raspberry-like fruits

Love the Autumn olive bush (or a small tree if pruned) for the extremely wonderful fragrance and its pollinators. Not invasive where I live. I didn't know the berries are edible. Thank you for the video and information.

That's good that autumn olive aren't invasive there. Around here they are in every old field and disturbed area.

Love the video, please make more. I live in central VT. I think I recognize most of those plants (especially the more common ones), but will I find all of them in my neck of the woods? And will I need to transpose the seasonality to later in the summer due my being at a slightly higher latitude (assuming “normal” weather patterns)? Oh, and are there any parts of these plants, or similar looking species that can be toxic, or host pathogens? Thanks again!

I've recently moved to the Pacific Northwest, might You know what edibles I'm likely to find, and berries to avoid. I certainly enjoyed the knowledge you have shared, we all should pay attention! Thank you!

I'm not familiar with the pacific northwest specifically. There are a few edible plant gensuses that can be found almost anywhere. Some examples are Rubus(raspberries & blackberries), Quercus(Oak trees for acorns), Allium(garlic and onions), Vaccinium & Gaylussacia(blueberries & huckleberries), cardamine(bittercress). Here's a link to an online friend of mine's page, she is from the pacific northwest and blogs about foraging and herbalism nittygrittylife.com/

I don't need to know what specific town you're in, but like upstate N.Y. etc im.juat. curious what part of New England you're in. I live in the upper part of Vermont and am trying to find some sort of organization or groups or even one person to go foraging with.I am so interested in learning how to do this, but I want to learn. I have Peterson's guide which is what I used last year, it's just I have no way of knowing if some of this is what I think it is. Sorry for the long post! Thanks

I'm in southern CT, near new haven. But this might help. On my website we created a database of local foraging tours. hopefully you can find a group in upstate NY. www.eattheplanet.org/foraging-tours-classes-and-groups-near-you/

Hey y’all! Please be careful when foraging yarrow or Queen Anne’s lace! Hemlock is one of their look a likes as well as hogweed. Don’t need anybody cosplaying Socrates via method acting! Hemlock is the poison used to kill Socrates if you didn’t get my joke there. Also please be careful with Queen Anne’s lace especially if you’re trying to get pregnant as it contains estrogen. Too much estrogen can cause a lot of problems especially if you’re pregnant and trying to be. Stay safe y’all!

I’m having trouble finding greenbrier, where does it tend to grow? Are the leaves all dead now that it’s fall?
@EatThePlanet
@EatThePlanet 4 жыл бұрын
I see it a lot on road side wooded edges and brushy areas. The leaves may have fallen off in your area, they haven't fallen off yet here. I wish i could go up there and find some for you. Also it's possible that it could be less common a little farther north where you are.

Found it! Have you ever eaten or used the root as a flour?
@EatThePlanet
@EatThePlanet 4 жыл бұрын
@@billjim334 great! Glad you found it. I never ground up the root. I tried to use it once but it was pretty hard. I've only eaten the leaves, berries and new growth. It off those options the new growth is pretty good. There is another species of smilax i come across sometimes that more bitter new growth. I'd have to look up which species that is. The one i usually eat is smilax rotundifolia.
@billjim334
@billjim334 4 жыл бұрын
@@EatThePlanet Hey again. So since finding a bunch of smilax rotundifolia in my area, I decided to dig the roots. Trouble is, there’s no big bulbous root like the other smilax have, just long rhizomes connected to a much thinner and harder root mass. I dug up a couple others plants and it was the same thing. Did you say this was your experience too?
