Love this channel Simon. Amazing content as usual. I think some sections not quite as rushed, a bit better paced and natural voice - I think more perhaps 'relaxed' speech compared to your other channels; easier to listen to.. I dunno, maybe it's just me and I'm too old and I just need to play you at half speed? you have a great voice and presenting style, just keep being more chilled and don't rush your speech.. a bit more like a radio presenter pace? Sorry. Life and everything seems to be going too fast for me for such good things, I like Radio 4 pace, your content deserves digestion rather than rushing through. Many thanks.

In the Alcatraz segment, I would like to point out that there is a significant difference between swimming a mile in a neoprene wetsuit (as evidenced by the picture of the kid coming ashore), and swimming a mile in street clothes. The issue would not be can you swim a mile, but can you survive hypothermia for long enough to do that in water that is at least 50 degrees under your normal body temperature? Also, they would be doing this in the dark, and it’s not clear how well-lit the shore they were making for was, so it’s quite possible that they could get disoriented and end up heading in the wrong direction. It’s not as simple a feat as it might sound.

Fun fact: The biggest thing privateers had going for them wasn’t just that at least the country that hired them wouldn’t bother them, it was the fact that pirates were either hung or shot on sight, because the penalty for piracy was death, but privateers were technically wartime combatants, and had documentation from their respective country to prove it, meaning they couldn’t be summarily executed, they had to be treated as prisoners of war if caught. (In theory anyway)
