The movie "Singles" gives ya some great examples of grunge, as it took place in the Seattle grunge scene. I wore maxi skirts and dresses, some sheer, with Docs. Some ditzy floral patterns, usually in browns, blacks, greens. And black tights/leggings with shorter skirts.

I'm 55. I totally remember grunge (early 20s) and the grunge bands. Flannel shirts became a big thing and loose jeans with rips in them. Look up a pic of Kurt Cobain - epitomy of grunge. Academia is like prep school style... ivy league universities, rich kids but from like the 20s or 30s... a lot of Ralph Lauren could be academia style. Modern Preppy is Lily Pulitzer or Tuckernuck. What you think the style mean is WHAT ALL BUYERS think the style mean when they are typing in search keywords. A lot of new versions of style are artificial and nothing to do with reality. Doesn't exist New Preppy, the customers just have "preppy" visual ideas. Period. It's like Classic and New Classic....I think you and all of us just have to trust our "visual" memory/idea of style....

Preppy was my generation. Middle & High school in early 80s. My school was reply and I think of wide wale pants with pink and green together - with animals embroidered - like whales and pigs! But the new preppy you showed is a major fail. Nothing preppy about those looks.
