@@NorthOz also have a Fortuner, the 2,8 GD6 4x4 VX auto which I bought in March this year. It has the adaptive cruise, blind spot monitoring, JBL sound, 360 degree cameras. Also removed the third row seats which gives a huge space. In South Africa a local company, Booxe, manufacture a box that then goes into the redundant footwell giving a level surface, covers to fill the 2 mounting point apertures and a rubber mat without the slots. But still hanker after a Prado. Ordered one in September last year but the dealer I did the order thru left a lot to be desired. Was getting rid of a Discovery 4 in February when the extended maintenance plan expired so was desperate. Went to a different dealer and they sourced the Fortuner which at the time was all I could get. Then the floods hit us and the Toyota factory here was under water and mud. Production started up again in August but huge demand backlogs so can get more than I paid for the vehicle. Huge speculation here with vehicle flipping particularly LC300’s in the Toyota product range. Have an order in for a Prado 2,8GD VX-L (which is similar spec to the Aussie Kakadu but excluding the rear entertainment) with the Fortuner selling dealer. May get one by year end. As one member of a local forum espoused, comparing a Fortuner to a Prado is like comparing a good Parker pen to a Mont Blanc. An obvious Prado fan! Ronny Dahl has a great KZbin video where he does the comparison with some surprising results. Go look as their respective strengths and weaknesses are in different areas.

re transmission gear you've mentioned, I've experience the same on my 2023 VX model. It drops from 4th to 3rd gear especially when I brake hard downhills around 70km/h, the engine just revs up to 3000 rpm which is no good and horrible noise to hear inside the cabin. What I do now is switch to sport mode and shift up back to 4th gear so that it remains at low rpm range.

after towing approx. 5OOOkms with a 1.5 tonne caravan with a 2022 prado, we notice that ( as per the owners manual) its 'best' to tow in S4. which means the engine revs are typically 2k ish and you can sit on about 90km ish. the cabin noise is louder, but hills don't make the transmission 'hunt' and transmission temp stays cooler. eg: more engine revs but more 'drive-able'. it seems to be an engine that relies on revs. also engine braking down hill, when towing is not 'substantial'. also we found the optional front parking sensors (on gxl model etc) are typical toyota ( from experience on older camry/corrolla etc) not as good as 'integrated' units. IMO. is this what your father has found? also what is your opinion on the 'auto' dropping down a gear when going down hill?
@NorthOz2 жыл бұрын
I tried the s4 today and it sits quite high in the rev range at 2.5k going 90. I suppose that’s fine but fuel consumption would get destroyed. Thank you for bringing that to my attention. The front sensors are not good at all. They beep and carry on all the time. Once I get over the crest of the hill the engine relaxes to a higher gear relying on brakes then once I brake hard enough it starts to engine brake. Does yours do the same?
@placestosea2 жыл бұрын
@@NorthOz yes, the motor has difficulty driving 5th when towing ( also 'shudders' at the lower revs) the auto transmission calibration/gearing is a disappointment for us. when towing the unexpected dropping back gear/s going down hill ( after light brake operation) can be 'alarming' also the trailer brakes would not be operated ( possible sway event?)
@Jason-zi3wh2 жыл бұрын
The reply is to North Oz. I’m pulling about 2500rpm in S4 at 100km/h. Your rpm’s seem high for 90km/h. Re fuel consumption, higher rpm’s will affect the fuel consumption, however the main driver of fuel consumption will be engine load and the efficiency of an engine at a certain load/rpm. You will find that towing in S4 (even with higher rpm) will likely give you better fuel economy than letting it go into 5th or 6th when towing a heavy load It will also have the added bonus of not over stressing the overdrive gears (5th and 6th) and the torque converter will likely stay locked more and keep your trans fluid temps down, so basically it will look after your transmission. FYI I have a 2021 and tow a 2.8ton van. Average 15-16l/100km when towing. Seeing as the advice of tow in S and don’t use overdrive gears comes rip from the manual, written by the engineers, I would also pit a lot of faith in it.
@placestosea2 жыл бұрын
@@Jason-zi3wh agree with your comments. Keeping in S4 also tends to make you tow at a more 'reasonable' speed. Also saving fuel. Unless you drive with out listening to the motor revs etc

The fine rust dots on your paint are not a defect with your Prado. When cars are shipped on Rail iron filings come off the train brakes and land on the paint of the car, or if a car is in a workshop where angle grinding etc is happening where hot iron is airborne. This is an easy DIY fix for you, get a product to remove such as Autoglym Magma 500mL which should be available at most parts stores in Aust (Supercheap etc). This will remove the rust spots permanently with ease. Just make sure to thoroughly wash off with lots of water and give the car a good was after and you will not see any more rust spots :)

@Car-crazy2 жыл бұрын
Not sure if you are unlucky and have a bit of a dud car, but I have the 2022 Prado TX 2.8 turbo Diesel and that simply flys up hills and does not hunt gears at all. Whether used on auto or manual setting, and where I live is nothing but hills some very steep. In fact just got back from a trip to Tokyo today and it is up hill all the way back to my house 180k and it was cruising along at a steady 120 and the revs stayed at a steady 1700 all the way, even after leveling out on the occasional flat patch and then going up hill again the revs barely changed. So just wondering if you have a rare Prado that has some sort of transmission or engine problem. Might be worth getting it checked out.
@NorthOz2 жыл бұрын
Hi mate! This is a common issue with autos and I have found the same in my dad’s 2022 Prado. It will often select the wrong gear, then quickly change gear to one that is too low to overcompensate. Others report the same
@Car-crazy2 жыл бұрын
@@NorthOz I see. Well at the moment I certainly am not getting that problem at all. As with any auto if you push the accelerator to hard release it slightly then push down again it can cause this, but then that is normal for any auto of any make of car. I have both auto and manual cars and the way I operate them is different. I am not saying you are doing this, but that would cause that issue which isn't really an issue it's more driving style. My car only has 4000 on it so once it's done more ks if that becomes a problem I will let you know, but as of yet no matter what speed or what incline I drive the car at I do not have any problems with the car selecting to high or lower gear. Using the S gears and selecting an appropriate gear may help you although I am actually just using it mostly in auto. I mostly use the s gears when driving in snow as it gives better control and more engine breaking. Good luck anyway. Nice channel by the way. Hi mate, thanks for asking. I have only had experience with the GXL. In my opinion, the most underrated 4wd on the market is the Prado. It’s very capable and very comfortable. The suspension is actually really good off-road but on road you’ll get body roll but it’s fine. Overall, the impression my Prado left me with is a strong, capable and well built vehicle that doesn’t do anything exceptionally but does everything better than other brands and models. I will probably buy another Prado again in the future. Great vehicles and good luck with the purchase. For $68k that’s around what I paid for my gxl 2 years ago but prices have increased. The new Prado releases soon but I’d stick with the current model as it looks better in my opinion and has better aftermarket and part support. The new model has very little to offer over the Prado 150.

Hey Mark. I’ve only had my 2022 Prado VX for a couple of months now but have thus far noted the following: a) aside from GVM compliance requirements (which I meet), I haven’t towed a caravan with it as yet but I’m already getting the impression that the 2.8L Diesel engine is a bit undersized for the vehicle; b) kinda glad I got the VX model over the GLX for the extra bits and pieces it comes with standard; c) the single USB connector in the front is a bit of a pain especially when the 12V cigarette lighter plug is already spoken for; d) despite all the mods I have thus far fitted to the vehicle, I am able to get about 8.3L/100km - but only after actually driving it like an 80yr old soccer great grandpa; e) the video resolution of the reversing camera is rubbish; f) had 10yr warranty PPF installed on the vehicle but it cost me an absolute bomb!!; d) I sometimes drive it in manual mode when the auto gearbox seems to select the wrong gear for the driving conditions. In relation to towing with the auto gearbox, I believe that it is optimum to tow heavy loads when the gearbox and the engine are at a 1:1 ratio (4th gear?) to prevent constant gearbox slippage resulting in sustained high gearbox operating temps and wear. Apart from that, very happy with the vehicle and still wouldn’t get anything else even if I could go back 🤙

Something a bit different. The draw card is the drive train which could be an interesting point of comparison. We have 2 Prado’s right now so a different vehicle could be good for comparison videos. What would you recommend? I’m thinking a wagon of some description
