Just like when he called the Olympic Airlines 747 an Airbus I think he mispoke and meant to say the only intact complete B-17E variant left in the world. I believe all the remaining intact B-17s in the world in museums and flying are all of the F and G variants. I don't believe there is a E variant anywhere on display. So that may be what he meant to say. Its Definately NOT the only B-17 left.

I rode in old 909, a B-17 bomber, last June 2018 belonging to the Collings Foundation. It was delightfully noisy, vibrated, was windy, and it filled with the delightful aroma of smoke and aviation fuel when they started the engines. My friend took a selfie out of the top turret at 160mph, a place where many cell phones are sucked out of hands and lost forever on many flights. It was worth the price.

Watch the Nova program, "B-29: Frozen in Time." Absolutely amazing attempt to rebuild a B-29 abandoned for 50 years on frozen tundra, with results poignant in more ways than one. The attempt to restore it to flight worthiness was successful, but beyond that, all I can say is, no spoilers here. Just watch it. Thank me later.

Actually there are a number of surviving B-17's still around, in the U.S. alone there are 9 that are airworthy with another being restored to airworthy condition. Of the B-17 E's there are currently 4 intact survivors with 1 of them being restored to airworthy condition.

Swamp ghost is not the only surviving B-17, it was just the only wreck left fully intact above water, there’s another B17 near where swamp ghost was recovered, it’s called the gray ghost, but it’s tail was sheered off in the wreck so it’s not intact even though all of the pieces are in the same spot.

The purported BE-12 on the pylon is obviously not this type of aircraft. The engines are radial piston engines and not turboprops that would be found on the BE-12. I suspect that the aircraft is actually a much older design that preceded the BE-12 in Soviet service.
