SUMMARY:
- Elizabeth only managed to escape execution by assuring Mary that she didn’t have any part in the rebellions. She was still kept under house arrest for almost a year, though.
- Elizabeth’s predecessors died before they could produce an heir, so she took the throne.
- Once she became queen, Elizabeth’s advisors started a campaign to make flattering portraits of her. Later on, these depictions would include details of classic goddesses like Venus or Diana.
- Elizabeth was adamant that she wouldn’t marry any man in her lifetime, and she stood her ground. After all, she was a dedicated leader married to her country.
- Being the Virgin Queen didn’t prevent Elizabeth from becoming the subject of all kinds of rumors. One of the most viable was that she was in love with her lifelong friend Robert Dudley.
- She was very, very elaborate about her looks, and spent over 4 hours a day getting ready! Not only did she want to look immaculate, she also had other ways to stand out in a crowd…
- While the Queen herself was always shining in her beauty, she required her ladies to only wear black or white, making them pale in comparison.
- When she was young, she was gorgeous. But after a bout of smallpox, Elizabeth was left with facial scars and hair loss.
- At the time of Elizabeth’s reign, sugary stuff was pretty expensive and reserved mostly for the upper class. Well, she used her position as the Queen to the fullest in that respect.
- Despite the fact that her mom, Anne Boleyn, had been executed, Elizabeth loved her dearly, albeit secretly.

It is clear to me that she did not marry a man because she was traumatized by her horrible father killing off her mother and the way he discarded women. He’s pretty gross. I find it interesting that the Church of England started because the Catholic Church or Pope at the time would not annul his first marriage so he could marry her mother Anne. I can’t imagine how horrible those times. I got to say - I don’t blame her for not wanting to marry. Not a mystery to me.

Elisabeth was very fond of Anne of Cleaves who protected and cared for both Elisabeth and her sister when they were children. Nick Doe well, his uncle Thomas Seymour was really responsible for that. He tried to marry young Edward to an equally young, Lady Jane Grey. Her father was involved as well. She wouldn’t have necessarily been his successor but his queen and wife and then any children they had would be heir to the throne, not Mary or Elizabeth. But he was caught in the act of trying to kidnap the king. Apparently, the king’s dog started barking and alerted the guards. Unfortunately, Uncle Thomas killed the poor dog but too late. He was discovered, thrown in the tower and later beheaded.

This gives some misleading information. Robert Dudley married as a teenager the first time. While he and Elizabeth had been friends since they were about 8, they were hardly a romantic couple at the time Robert married Amy Robsart for love. Amy died about 10 years later under suspicious circumstances when Elizabeth was queen. Because of those suspicions and the fact that Elizabeth was wary of sharing power with any man, even Robert Dudley, she didn't marry him. After about 20 years of trying to change her mind and not succeeding, Robert, now the Earl of Leicester, married a second cousin of Elizabeth. When Elizabeth found out, she was furious and banned him from court for a while. But relatively soon, she forgave him and took him back, but she never allowed his wife at court. Leicester's wife, btw, was the mother of the Earl of Essex. His story is another important part of Elizabeth's life. When Elizabeth died, 15 years after Leicester, it was discovered she had kept a miniature portrait of him along with the last letter he sent her in a small keepsake box next to her bed.

@@heyjingxuan What's really sad is how Robert Dudley is treated in the film "Elizabeth." Joseph Fiennes make a "fine" Robert Dudley until the script writers besmirch his reputation and honor. He never betrayed Elizabeth (unless you consider him eventually remarrying later in life to be a betrayal). Robert stood by Elizabeth through thick and thin, and, in their way, did have a long, successful relationship of almost 50 years. Not bad considering the times they lived and the challenges they faced separately and together.

1) She was around during Shakespeare’s “Romeo & Juliet” . 2) She was Protestant, while her old sister, Mary was Catholic. 3) Her rein was considered the golden age of England. 4) Mary Queen of Scotts was her cousin, who had been given a choice to either be exiled or be beheaded. This was because Mary was caught, along a few other followers within the Queen Elizabeth’s court, committing treason. Mary Queen of Scotts was Catholic and the Catholic Church hated the idea of having a Protestant Queen sitting upon the throne of England. Well, Mary Queen of Scotts requested her execution, in which Queen Elizabeth would have to attend. Some say Mary did so for 2 reasons: 1) avoid humiliation for being exiled. 2) the Catholic Church would have had her killed for failure to eliminating the Queen. You need remember back in those times the Church had just as much power as a Queen or King. And just like her father, Queen Elizabeth was a stubborn and knew her own mind. You could say that’s just one of many reasons why so many women & young girls look up to Queen Elizabeth I...including me self. M

According to the Act of Succession (I think that's what it was called) signed by Henry VIII, Edward was first in line. If he had no issue, then Mary was next. If Mary had no issue, then Elizabeth was next. Edward, sometime after he became King, altered the Act to say that, upon his death, Lady Jane Gray would become Queen, which she did for a few days before Mary seized it back from her. Every article I've read says Edward's alteration was illegal, though I haven't read why. He was King, and the Parliament voted for the amendment, so wouldn't that have made Lady Jane the legitimate Queen? I may dig a little further into that at some point.

Her makeup contained white lead and mercury which was probably a reason of her death. She always looked so fair and her lips were red because of applying the hazardous makeup. She did that to conceal the scars caused by the smallpox.

The fact that she was not married is not a “surprising fact” - it’s one of the most famous things about Elizabeth, if not THE most famous thing about her. Also, the fact about ladies of the court being unable to overshadow Elizabeth? That was the same for men and every person at court. No one could upstage the queen.

When she passed she was wearing a ring with her mother’s portrait in it. She was also holding, or it was by her bedside, a letter from Robert Dudley which had “His last letter” written on it.

7:25, Anne Boleyn's Pearls, passed down to Queen Elizabeth I are also the same 4 set pearls dangling in the middle of the Imperial State Crown, 1 of 2 Crowns worn by the British monarch, Immediately after coronations and opening of State Parliament. Not correcting, just thought it was a very fascinating fact not a lot would know.

I think you should check your historical facts. Mary Queen of Scots (Bloody Mary) married James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell. They had a son, James, born June 19, 1566. James was James VI, King of Scotland beginning in July 1567 and then became King of England and Ireland as James I on March 24, 1603, the same day Queen Elizabeth I died. He was most remembered for hiring a roomful of the best scribes and having them translate the Bible primarily from Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic into the English they spoke at the time. Thus, printed the King James Bible we still use today.
