The irony here is that we need to spend several hours writing a resume and cover letter for every job application to only be glanced at for 7 seconds.

Thank you for you valuable advice. However, when people have to submit hundreds of application to receive one response, it is impossible for them to spend hours to tailor their resume for a certain opening. People usually start with the approach of spending hours tailoring their resumes, but after months have passed with not one single response for the resume they worked hard to prepare they start sending one-size-fit-all resumes.
@MakeThatChange
@MakeThatChange 8 ай бұрын
And how many responses do they get for one-size-fit-all resume?
@ShomitChotia
@ShomitChotia 8 ай бұрын
@@MakeThatChange It is about the same amount of responses you get for the tailored resumes: 1 for hundreds of applications. Unless you have a connection inside the company it is not worth time to tailor your resume to job opening. Of course you can always target job opening within a narrow field around your job experience and education.
@MakeThatChange

1 for 100 is not enough. A good resume should get a response 1/5 times at worst. There's lots of room to improve it seems.

What I find intriguing is how the same woke people who say identity is fluid and people can transition in the blink of an eye will completely shutdown a job candidate if they transitioned career even once. It's the synthesis of Amerikanski politics: extremely conservative economically, neoliberal, and liberal culturally. But the contradiction is there... there are plenty of "sins" someone cannot commit in their job-life, but their other identities? Then it's a free for all, everything is accepted.

That's why I hate the market these days. It has almost nothing in common with your experience and actual job responsibilities. It's now about how well you can peacock in the resume and during the interviews. - A great resume? In reality, they simply paid somebody who specialized in resume writing. Most of the time people just don't know the actual meaning behind the buzzwords they used. - Motivated look on the interview and a clear speech? In reality, they simply memorized and scripted the entire speech, then rehearsed it during the previous few dozen interviews. - Improved something on 95%? HRs care so much about percentages and achievements in the text yet they have no way to verify it. - Got references from their colleagues? The value of that is zero due to the overwhelming amount of hypocrisy out there. Have you seen Steve Jobs's resume? I bet he would not find a position in 2023.
@MakeThatChange
@MakeThatChange Жыл бұрын
I doubt Steve Jobs even ever had a resume. All the points you bring up - a good hiring manager or HR will see through all the fluff and buzzwords, if they don't - it will be crystal clear on the initial interview.
@johnsmith21123
@johnsmith21123 Жыл бұрын
@@MakeThatChange I specifically mentioned his resume because it is easy to google. I agree that initial interview might help filtering out fake candidates. However, a lot of great specialists who mastered their profession but have simple resumes will miss their chance to be invited on the initial interview simply because someone invested more time to develop the ability of standing out.

Honestly, the whole West hiring culture is inefficient. I understand needing to cut down on workload in Human Resources departments, which is why they're using AI these days... she didn't mention how you can create your resume to trigger AI sweet-spots, for instance. Anyways, thinking about a company that doesn't use AI to pre-select candidates, I understand a HR manager having the need to reduce his/her workload by creating arbitrary criteria by which they abide, since it's hundreds of applications for some times 1 position... but at least be honest about it and say it's somewhat subjective and arbitrary, instead of making it look like a hard-science LOL I think it would be more fair to apply an exam before interviews. Some people are really good at interviews, even though their skills are lacking, and the exam would at least remove them from the pool.

@@karagousiskwrioptokonopopo6316 in USA its not a HR department hiring. It's a recruiting company in India using a AI tool and they only take the candidates to whom they can steal the most % of their paycheck and provide the least benefit to. They don't care if the candidate is the best for the company lmao

This video is the perfect example why most talented immigrants with a solid career are preferring to work in European companies instead of North American companies, more precisely Canadian ones. I understand that there have been a lot of resumes in there that have been really poorly formatted and constructed, but there have been a lot that just seem to be a lack of goodwill. European companies are much more focused on what you really have to offer and want to hear from you than whether your resume is formatted and constructed correctly or not. This isn't a specific criticism of you because I know that's the culture here and you're just following the pattern. But honestly, there are some situations that are just ridiculous. Again, this is not a direct criticism of you, you are simply showing how things work and giving tips on how to fix it. My criticism is how resumes are evaluated here.

One thing I really don't understand is how companies ask for so much experience for job positions with extremely simple tasks? Does anyone really need 5 years of experience to code Python??? Seriously, in 6 months someone with an IQ of 100+ is acing it (average IQ!!!). Not to mention social media management, which a Gen-Z will ace far quicker than an older employee (so experience can actually be detrimental here). For instance, I don't get TikTok, since I'm in my mid-30s. Some companies seem to actively search mediocre candidates as well, because HR departments are so afraid of people that can threaten the position of their friends (or themselves). It's a side effect of the subjective selection process. HR employees and manager don't accept criticism, they seem to think it's working just well. But look at the numbers in the economy, it's lagging behind countries that pre-select candidates with exams. Nepotism is rampant and networking is far more important than actually being the best at your job. And the GDP growth numbers shows unequivocally the inefficiency of Western companies as an aggregate index.

The other common mistake that we have seen is to not tell a lie or fib on a resume. Those employers can perform a background check for the specific candidate and if those work histories don’t match, that’s a disqualification.

When I used to hire for plastic manufacturing, this was a common problem; people would generalize that making plastic sheets was all the same. In this case, the worker had to have specific safety experience as well as proven attention to detail, and these areas can not be faked on a resume. Many plastics are manufactured the same way, but in my case, this was the manufacture of foam, and these plants are scarce. I liked to have a test when the person was applying and within the test to highlight the specific areas critical to safety and manufacturing.

My questions are 1.Does HR departments of the companies uses any software to evaluate the relevant resumes? 2. Would it be helpful to put all of your experiences even if those are irrelevant? 3. Is there any priority for the residents of Canada coz i am applying from Asia pacific region

You are very welcome! 1.Does HR departments of the companies uses any software to evaluate the relevant resumes? - depends on the size of the company. if you are applying for a company with 500+ employees, there's likely a software used to filter. Smaller companies are usually done manual or semi-manual 2. Would it be helpful to put all of your experiences even if those are irrelevant? - ideally, it's best to optimize for the most relevant experience and transferrable skills 3. Is there any priority for the residents of Canada coz i am applying from Asia pacific region - there's always preference for those with Canadian work authorization

@@MakeThatChange the hiring company can f.e. create hiring website with tests for candidate. Test can be separate in open and close type. If candidate score certain amount of point in close type tests than him candidacy will be sent to HR members where will be judged him answers for open type questions. Using psychology methods you can even evaluate personality of candidates by simple test on website (look how are hired pilots in airline companies). That will be much more reliable than 3-4 sentence in objectives You told that you decline 99% of resumes but do you beleave that from all of this hundreds and thousand people only 1% is fit to work in your company? Maybe there is a problem not with all of this resumes but with form of recruiting? I understand that we're leaving in world where probaly the most valuable skill that communication and self representation but unfortunately not everyone have it. But it doesn't mean that them bad employees. I saw too much "effective managers" with 2000k% of successful projects which in fact are able show beautiful graphs but not solve the problems (spoiler - if you will fly in plane with burning engine, that probably work of such one) Maybe HR's not should put forward their demand on the basis of which they in 7 seconds will judge you, but create environment when potential candidate can in simple manner represent him atitudes, experience and personality? I want to clarify that my comment is not a criticism of you personally, but a general observation. The fuss about discrimination is ridiculous and utterly pointless. Even if a candidate does not include a profile photo, they can still face discrimination if they're not liked for any reason during an interview. And that's normal and even appropriate. For instance, a receptionist is often required to be presentable as it's a matter of image and more, and for this reason, a company will always tend to make such choices. It's human nature and it won't change because of the social madness dictated by political correctness and other nonsense. Therefore, the practice of “not accepting” profile photos, for example, is just hypocrisy.
@MakeThatChange

Thanks for sharing this. You’re right. There will always be reasons to discriminate, and it’s just happens that the consensus in most North American countries is that a photo has a very small added value on the resume and is never a determining factor for selection for most positions. Obviously, positions that select based on looks typically have different requirements and process as a whole.

@@MakeThatChange Thank you too for sharing your insights and for responding to my comment. I agree with your perspective. Having recently moved to Canada, I’m actively trying to understand the best template to use. However, I am mindful that my experiences should take precedence in portraying my professional profile, rather than a resume’s graphic appeal, which might meet visual expectations but fails to convey my actual experience. Thus, I’ll steer clear of including any content that could be fabricated just to fulfill some recruiters’ illusions 😅.

Make sure to follow the advice in the video and tailor your resume to each job your apply for. Never bombard a company with your resume more than once, it will be perceived as aggressive and thoughtless and will guarantee no response

Hello I’m applying for a job, any job at that matter in Canada. I’m recently live in the Philippines. I would like to know how many times should I send my resume with a cover letter to the same company? You mentioned before that you get a lot of resumes in a day. I’ve been sending my resume 10x every other day to a lot of companies. Did I just lost my change of a possibility of getting a reply at least? HELP!
@MakeThatChange
@MakeThatChange 9 ай бұрын
Not more than once to the same company, otherwise it may be perceived as annoying and needy, especially if your resume doesn’t have an excellent fit to the role.

I came across your video while looking for help adjusting my resume and changing gears in my job search. I'm not new to Canada, but I have found the market a struggle to find a new role. One question: in my case, the company I work for now has reduced my hours because of lack of work. This company only sometimes secures work in my skill area, and I can only put in 40 hours a month; I need to work more consistently to care for my family. What would I tell a potential employer during the interview if they asked why I would be leaving? I know my current employer did not intend to put me in this situation, but due to the market in Canada, they have no choice.
@MakeThatChange
@MakeThatChange 8 ай бұрын
Thank you for reaching out. I would recommend to be transparent with the new employer. Reason to leave "Current employer is facing financial difficulties, and is not able to provide me with stable and secure career opportunities. I am looking for a new role at a company that is growing steadily and can offer opportunities for advancement." I would recommend to not mention any more details. Position it as if you're still employed, employer is struggling, and you are looking for a better more stable company. Hope it helps.

When we are a foreign dentist who can't practice yet without an equivalency, and we Apply for something in which we can seem overqualified like a dental receptionist. How can we match our experience with that
@MakeThatChange
@MakeThatChange Жыл бұрын
This is a tricky situation. If you are receiveing your equivalency as a dentist, it will always be clear to an employer that 1) you're overqualified for the job 2) you will leave as soon as you receive equivalency. In some cases it could be ok, but in most, the employer would not want to invest into hiring and training you, only for you to leave the job. Ideally, you would hide the fact that you're receiving dentist equivalency from your resume and lean into your auxillary strengths and experiences, alternatively - try to keep an eye out on on clinics that are in URGENT need of staff - they might be less picky. Hope this helps!

You're unbelievable 😂😂. The interesting part is how the person is rejected by seeing the size of his/her resume by one second. Regardless of the efforts that person put on it..this video was kind dramatic. I love your videos

An average time recruiter spends about 7 seconds on a resume. Unfortunately, a recruiter doesn’t care how much effort has been put into it if they don’t find what they’re looking for.

Do you have any suggestions for someone who is older and has been out of the workforce?
@MakeThatChange
@MakeThatChange Жыл бұрын
It’s similar to some of my suggestions made in this video. Tell a story on why you’ve been out of workforce and why you want to come back. Call out that you were in a break, and if you can, provide a short explanation why. This will address the first most probable question the employer will have looking at your resume. Second, The main challenge for employer - is are you uptodate in most recent developments in your role? As long as you are able to show that you’ve been brushing up on your skills during the time you were off (or recently) as you prepare to come back, it will help the overall strength of your resume as well. Overall, each case is individual , and every single thing you show in resume needs to make sense and have continuity for the employer.

It depends on the company and how you are reaching out to them. Personally, I dislike cover letters. However, if I am connecting with a hiring manager on LinkedIn or really want a specific job at a specific company, I would write a personalized message (which might look like a mini cover letter)
