Congratulations on getting them to grow bigger than a spec of dust, or to live longer than 2-3 days, which is the result that I, and most others got from those kits.

Hey dude- I've found that 2.5mm diameter food grade tubing fits into the little holes on the top of the Sea Monkey castle/on Mars tanks, if you're still looking for a way to get in there to aerate them with your pumps! :) I've got the tube in a hole at the back of the tank so it tucks behind the scenery, and it's working great! Also, I LOVE your stuff and your set-ups!

I just recently started a DIY sea monkey project in a jar I bought from Target and a piece of driftwood I got from the local beach (boiled and treated), seeing the amount of algae in your DIY jar makes me envious! I see a really light covering of green on the driftwood so far, but they only hatched a few days ago so I don't expect to have a forest just yet. Love seeing all these monkies!

Take a glass and fill it with water, just clean tap water, put it in front of a window, and Eureka after a time algae will appear out of nowhere! Of course you can speed up the formation of algae using fertilisers, but even without fertilisers algae will show up sooner or later! Water + Sun Light = Life, and once life gets a foothold, life attracts life, and biodiversity will increase...

I remember these guys! Had them for about two weeks as a kid then the tank dissappeared. Either my mom took it away because she thought the monkeys died or one of my "friends" from school swiped it on a play date... not sure why she would though? Lol I thought the Sea Monkey brand ran out of buisness, but I guess not! It's nice to see the tanks together being used for the shrimps again.

That big tank is going to be super awesome once it's set up! I'd go with a dark fine sand so they'll really pop against a dark background and put a cool pirate ship decoration or something in there. Filtration I'd just go with a tiny fine sponge filter or just an air stone. I don't know the right salt level you need for sea monkeys but I'm sure you can buy a bag of aquarium salt and find a recipe to mix your own brine solution for it, then you'd top up evaporation with distilled water. Think of it as your first salt water tank. A test kit might come in handy as well. Next thing you know you'll be setting up a marine aquarium with Nemo! Lol

Great algae growth on your tanks. Me and my kid just started this 2 weeks ago and I'm yet to see any algae growing. We started seeing almost hundreds of babies but now only see 4 to 5 seamonkeys alive. How did you get the algae growing so well?
@SeaMonkeyDudeJon

For algae to first grow, it takes a long time. In my first few tanks it took 3-4 months. To help promote growth, keep the water warm and use lights. Plant grow lights out standard LEDs work well.

Have you ever considered setting up a 5 / 10 gallon tank colony for them? a sponge filter would add filtration / air without being too strong and they'd probably thrive, also terrariums come in many shapes / sizes and make good small planted tanks!

I actually have the World's Largest Sea-Monkey Colony in a 16-gallon aquarium. Check it out here: kzbin.info/aero/PLGrCJHHeZg-aXjxcN0RoaW7ssyrQDlgiS I've got an air line in there, but no filter. Sea-Monkeys get sucked up into filters and die. Also, they are filter feeders, so it works actually be filtering out the tiny food particles that they eat.
@pershop4950
@pershop4950 6 күн бұрын
the babies feed on food in the water column so it's recommended not to have any kind of filter at all the adults can eat off surfaces as well as the water column but not necessarily when they're fighting a current (the filter/sponge sucking up all the food particles)

Those tanks are deliciously dirty, full of healthy algae which means happy Artemia munching on it, also algae produce oxigen, I've even seen pockets of oxigen bubbles forming that were kept trapped below the mass of the algae. And the smaller the containers, the less problems you will have with oxigen, even on hot days, when water does not absorb oxigen that much, just as long as your surface area is big enough, you won't have issues, won't even need a bubbler...

I suspect the longer-lived sea monkeys have to do with the species of creature. They are much smaller sea monkeys that are in the other cheap tanks and only live for a few weeks, whereas the larger ones can survive for a year or more because the species can naturally. I'm sure I heard the man who invented them used a short-lived species in order to continue generating income from the idea. Like, you could buy "food packs" which were essentially a new batch of sea monkeys, which would effectively restock the tank and bring them back to life. Have you seen the Ecosphere? It's a sealed glass container with a combination of plant and animal. Apparently, they can last for a year or more and only needs a bit of light in order to keep the biosphere self-sufficient providing a food source for the tiny shrimp. However, you must only expose them to bright light for a limited number of hours a day, I believe. It appears you have a similar species in your long-lived tanks, the difference being, your tanks are not sealed off from the environment. Anyway, an Ecosphere would be a nice addition to your collection, providing another approach to your hobby. It's virtually maintenance free, and they come in all shapes and sizes.
@bullzdawguk
@bullzdawguk Жыл бұрын
I searched for an Ecosphere on Amazon and Ebay after posting but couldn't find any. Perhaps the company went out of business. I couldn't find their site. If they have gone out of business, the Ecospheres I saw on sale a couple of years ago would have been exhausted on the market, which means they have all died. Maybe you'll have better luck.

I know nothing about them, as I was never lucky enough to have any live, but couldn't you put them all into one larger tank (like a 10 - 20 gallon)? Love this video, thank you!

I'm sorry to hear that. When they are young, after they shed the first exoskeleton, they almost look transparent and are VERY difficult to see.

You know, if you really wanna keep and grow these animals successfully, you should look into brine shrimp feeding for tropical fish. Those guys hatch, and raise and keep huge numbers of these things effectively. The system you have now isn't great

I have 20+ colonies of these guys and have for two years now. It seems to be going pretty well.

@@Mr.Peanut1986 I hope you enjoy! And to answer your question in a less smart ass way, I really enjoy the Sea-Monkey branded tanks themselves. The different shapes and scenery etc. is fun to me. That being said, I do have a huge aquarium that holds the World's Largest Sea-Monkey Colony now. Lots of fun!

@@SeaMonkeyDudeJon Man, my mom used to read Archie comics. These were advertised in the back. I never got one. But after watching your videos and another guy, I'm starting to want sea monkeys lol. I remember seeing them as a kid in the backs of comics and readers digest.

The algae? I grow it purposely. They eat it. Helps with aeration too.
