First truck I ever drove was a 12 speed Mack. 15 years old driving it around the farm. Best memories ever.

Still nothing like an old "R" model...they definitely didn't ride as well as the newer models today, but they got the job done. BTW, whoever is driving, good job banging gears. Have a blessed week, Jeff

i remember dad tellin me about those. What he taught me to do with those old wagons, was to back under, but not hit the pin hook up your air lines, and hold the trailer brake till you hit the pin.
@ledfoot7313 жыл бұрын
@dustypete38 the old 12 speeds were awesome, 5 lever shifts and a selector that had low, direct, neutral and reverse. Some had an extra stick for low,low and some had a lever on the dash for it. We used them to pump of tankers, like you said put the selector in neutral and the lever in 4th and throw in the pto....tank trailer empty in no time. I used to love shifting backwards when parking at the truckstop...always got people looking.

thats a real work truck. If you can spend 10 hrs. a day driving an old R model mack thats when you know you can drive.

I love MACK truck's i grew up in a 1968 RL700L logging truck in central cali.
@gpoeppel72312 жыл бұрын
the blue button is actually the emergency spring brake release valve. back in the day when only trucks had spring brakes there was a seperate tank on the truck solely for the purpose that, if the driver ran out of air he could temporarily release them to get off the road and move to a safer location.
@dustypete3813 жыл бұрын
@mightyjoe2999 its the tractor park button, can only be used when the parking and the trailer supple buttons are in otherwise it doenst do anything. I drive a '96 CL 700 tri axle lowboy tractor for work with a E7 and it has a tractor park button still, some older macks where goofy and had that button so you could keep the rest of the air going in order to run PTOs and other accessories.
@dustypete3813 жыл бұрын
@ledfoot73 haha hell yea man, we still have an 86 RD that is set up that way, its a good transmission once you get used to it. Also we had a lot of older DM with the 2 stick 7 speeds that were also good for 5 speeds in reverse, always a nice feature in a dump or water truck. It really does get people looking when you're grabbing gears in reverse!

macks had an air switch that was usually up on top of the dash (in earlier models) until it was relocated onto the front of the dash to control the interaxle lock

I remember pulling a tanker from 73 and that's how I hooked up to it. Those old trailers are hell. Local rock company still has pups that don't have spring brakes and they're pain but there's no sense getting rid of them if they still serve their purpose. Its like the old truck in this video. It still has its purpose no sense in getting rid of it if it still gets the job done.
@dustypete3813 жыл бұрын
Should also note that truck is about as weird as can be, it must have the neutral override switch engaged, shift lever in 4th, PTO engaged and hoist control set to lift in order to run the wet kit for the Trail Eze lowboy trailer! Tough trucks and they last forever but haggard

Macks are terrific and dependable tractors. The only thing I never liked about them is their steering radius. Any Freightliner, Volvo, KW, etc. can steer rings around them.

@n8bolton12 жыл бұрын
ya mean hydraulic brakes, like in a car? yeah, air brake systems are quite a bit different. and you're right, these 12-speeds aren't the most common transmission on the road, even in Mack's, which is the manufacturer they were built by.

You've got to be kidding me? It's the bat signal. haha. Actually they took it out of most trucks after about 1977 or 1978. The old trailers didn't have spring brakes for parking. That blue valve charged the trailer air to set the trailer brakes when you parked it. Still needed a chock block as the air leaked away over time but that's what the blue valve was used for back in the day.
@tompaul25916 жыл бұрын
pete379exhd2010 Mack still used them in the 90s. Had a 94 Mack with a blue button

I meant locks the brakes. I have driven 2 trucks with the 3 button set up and the blue button on both would just set the brakes on one rear axle while the red did both. I have no idea why though?
@n8bolton12 жыл бұрын
it's the spring brake. the parking brakes, in case all the air in the system drains or leaks out. look up how air brakes in these trucks work, it may help ya better understand it.

Yea that's what that blue valve is for. I wouldn't know it but my dad's been driving since the 70s, and before that his step dad drove that's where he learned it. This question doesn't get asked much anymore as most drivers have never seen a truck with a blue valve. Mack put them in up until the late 80's I believe. Pete and KW got rid of them by 82. I still would like to find a 70s pete with the blue valve to put new drivers in just so they could ask and give a history lesson. Take care

Never dealt with that. Although it does sound stupid. I have an air leak so my trailer is always popped in the morning not matter what. But that is stupid I've always charged the trailer before releasing the tractor. I ain't got time to push in the tractor then the trailer and sit there and wait for bags to air up. Then again my trailer doesn't have an auto dump so it wouldn't make much difference.
