I'm glad to hear your partner is recovering! Have you thought about saving seeds? We had a good amount of food put away, but when I went to order seeds everyone here was sold out. I had to rely on what I saved and couldn't really try any new varieties last spring. As far as bees go, I have a crab apple tree in my garden that seems to attract all the pollinators and I try to plant zinnias and marigolds in with the veggies because they flower all growing season.
@REDGardens4 жыл бұрын
Thanks. i ave thought a lot about saving seeds, and have done some in the past, and want to do more in the future. I have found the extra hassle, time and space seed saving takes a bit much on busy years, and I grow more varieties and types of vegetables than I could realistically save seed for. I think a lot of people had trouble getting seeds last years, and I fear even more will have trouble the season.

Sorry to hear about your cancer. Hope you are doing well now. I don't think moving the bee hives closer will help. According to my father (a beekeeper with more than 40 years experience) the honey bees will regularly pass over flowers that are closer and binge on more desirable flowers farther away.

Just wanted to extend a thanks for your videos and your very measured, patient style of presenting information and research. Once the shut-downs began in my city, I began to keep a little patio garden, and while it was a very puny thing I had assembled largely of store-bought soil and old buckets, I found these much more ambitious and detailed videos of yours to be very instructive and, in a way, meditative. Agree 100% about resilience lessons from last year. I'm only an amateur permaculturist, but even the small variety of vegetables I grow provided me with many meals during those times when cases were high in my area. Welcome back, we missed you. I have learnt so much from you and since I started my own garden I've learnt even more 1: Pests can take over, and quickly! 2: Learn what grows upright and what grows as a vine, this one caught me ... improper research on beans :/ 3: Summer squash produce a lot of food... and I mean a LOT!!! I never knew a simple courgette could grow so big in just a single week! 4: Prepare your garden with a lawnmower, mash up the organics on the top and leave the soil in tact. This is great for soil biology, but bad if you have diseased plants 5: For some reason, the food from your garden always taste better than that what you bought in store Can't wait to see more

Fantastic to hear that your partner got through and is recovering, its a stressful situation to be in or to have a loved one go through. Ringing that bell at the end has got to be a whole collection of emotions. Within my household we've had a similar experience this year with my father, and thankfully the treatment has also closed well thus far. Its been an especially hectic year for especially unwelcome diagnoses. From a different perspective, In a way, the globally depressed flu season has been a blessing, so I'd suppose there was a silver lining to this year being as it was. I hope Cloughjordan has been safe from widespread transmission, and stays that way! Its been a very fortunate year for more remote living. Best wishes!

Sorry to hear about the cancer thingie, and glad to hear about the complete remission. One of my lockdown projects might be of interest to you, in the "avoid polyester ropes and other plastic in future" department: Use wire! - any soft, non-pre-stretched wire will do. If you buy it, it has to be "annealed" (softened by heat treatment). I learned about "clamptite", "haywire clamper" and ХОМУТАТЕЛЬ a few years ago, and dismissed it, it seemed too improvised to me. Last year I tried it due to boredom, build a "haywire clamper" clone in about 100min from scraps from the bin. My brother dismissed it, it seemed too improvised to him. He challenged me to build a test piece with 16 clamped connections, with high pressure hose. He maxed out his testing pump at 60bar, none of the connections failed, despite being clamped with old weathered chicken fence top wire (1.8mm). You cannot only clamp hoses, but connect handles to things, attach slats to fence posts, bind camera fixtures to lantern posts, you can sew together planks... anything you can imagine. You could also use it to wrap quartered hazelnut rods or bamboo or old water pipe as a ridge beam to the polytunnel, to hang your tomato plants from.

I can’t get summer bulbs or starter plants or soft fruit delivered which is frustrating. I’ll just have to grow more from seed I suppose but I don’t have a suitable propagation set up at the moment. I will just have to do without very early starts on some varieties. Still plenty to grow! I’m in Northern Ireland and I think seed shortages are the least of our problems.

Lots of different pressures fro adapt these days, but I can imagine in Northern Ireland there would be a very different hierarchy of needs! Best of luck with it all.

In my opinion 'pollinator attracting plants' is detrimental to pollinating what you actually want. As you say, the bees are lazy and/or have strong preferences, and so hand pollinating cucurbits is necessary. In my much smaller setting it's doable.
@REDGardens4 жыл бұрын
They do seem picky. My dad has been a beekeeper for decades and has always said that bees will binge on their preferred flowers, until they are gone.

The problem with the storytelling nature of humans is that we gravitate towards exceptional stories of problems and mistakes and then we assume that story reflects the general realities. But it's the exception that makes the story good. Boring statistical data about mortality rates and morbidity and access don't make interesting stories. I'm so glad your partner is doing well. Stay safe.

Love your vids! Thank you for sharing your knowlegde! Did you look into cover-crops and regeneration of soil? Look for Gabe Brown here on YT! Great stuff! Complete Remission! Phew! Glad for you both! Greetings from Hungary
@REDGardens3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I have looked at cover crops a bit, and I use some for overwintering in otherwise empty beds. But the small scale of what I am doing it is easier and more productive to import fertility/compost. At a larger scale I think cover crops can be a really important part of soil building and fertility management.

It's true, the pandemic really made people move from flats to houses and starting to embrace the gardening skills, at least that is what I see in eastern Europe where I live. Let's hope that we will heave a ecosystem that will allow us to grow fruits and vegetables, with the state of the climate, who knows what tomorrow might look like. Really enjoy your videos, I like listening to you, you heave a certain way of narrating.

Thanks. Yeah, chemotherapy is quite an amazing process, and seems to have improved quite a bit in recent years. My friends dad died 10 years ago from the same type of cancer my partner had, which was apparently untreatable back then.

We're really honing in on the amount of varieties this year. Want to save seeds focusing on genetics best suited for our garden. Only three or less per family. Hopefully we've got things spaced enough to avoid crossing. Exception is lettuce, still over a dozen varieties there. Thanks for sharing ☺️

Glad to hear your partner is doing well after the diagnosis. That's a lot of tomato varieties to trial, I've tried a lot over the years and found that stupice (a variety from Czech republic) was my favorite as it produced early and taste great. What tomato varieties would you recommend for Ireland?
@REDGardens4 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I have grown Stupid before but haven't been so impressed. I am working on a video of the varieties that I have found useful - hope to have that uploaded in a few weeks.
@stephanieraphael83384 жыл бұрын
Stupice is delicious but didn't hold up in our high humidity so yield was underwhelming for us. Glad you're able to grow it with success! A little jealous, they make for great sun-dried treats.

It would be interesting to see if you can build up club root in an organic, high organic matter garden. The predators of nematodes are said to proliferate.
@REDGardens3 жыл бұрын
That would be interesting.
@titanlurch4 жыл бұрын
Maybe you can reduce the flower population during the veggies blooming period but have a larger spring and fall flower crop would draw in the pollinators and allow them to stock up for winter.
@REDGardens4 жыл бұрын
I think that is the way to approach it.

Sorry to hear about your partner, thankful it’s gone well. I love this channel and your style, easily the most informative channel I’ve found. Sounds like you’ve identified a market gap in terms of Irish seed producers, maybe you should get into seed production this season! Selfishly I hope you do so I can watch your videos on it hahaha... from the Canadian maritimes
@REDGardens4 жыл бұрын
Hey there in the Canadian Maritimes (a place I have unfortunately never visited!) There is definitely a gap in the seed supplier market here in Ireland, though I don't know if I am the one to fill it. I do want to start saving more of my own seed this year though.
