Interestingly just saw at my university's faculty of health sciences faculty day a study where they measured the viability of osteoclast cells in cowpea digests and soy bean digests. They showed osteoclasts (which break down and absorb bone) were less viable in the digests of these plant based digests, suggesting bone degradation will be decreased on diets including them. Pretty cool

Great video, as ever! I was wondering if you had plans (or maybe already have done) a vid on the effects of dairy using the latest research. I know many vegans are still using the "milk leaches calcium from your bones" argument (most recently in Australia, a well-known paleo tv chef used this and got shot down in flames by the medical and scientific community, making us all look bad) I'm having a hard time finding an up-to-date concise argument to replace this. Thanks Mic, love your work.

Hey ;) I don't think it's embarrassing at all. Sometimes I have mock fish or chicken burger or mock pepperoni and I'm not concerned about admitting this in front of non vegans. Personally, I don't think there is anything wrong with having something with similar taste or texture to meat which is not meat ;) I mean, after all people like meat because of the taste and if you can have the cruelty free meat tasting meal why not have it? It's them that should be embarrassed for having animals killed for them to eat even if they can have same or similar thing without cruelty.

Deforestation to accommodate livestock grazing is serious issue in the Amazon but also here in Sonoma county, Northern California - where we have a lot of dairy farms. palm oil is not the worst thing in the world if you don't mind wiping out the S.E.Asian rainforest. I mind. A lot.
@jefflittle89138 жыл бұрын
There is an argument for worrying mainly about "incremental suffering". Animal bones are an almost worthless commodity at the slaughterhouse. No additional animals would ever be slaughtered to create bone char. From my perspective this means that if two ethical vegans fell on opposite sides of this issue, both would be correct from a perspective and neither has a solid footing to criticise the other. Nutritional vegans, of course, are more concerned about sugar than bone char (and will criticize palm oil for being a heart-unhealthy saturated fat).

Hi Mic. Huge fan. I (think I) have an example of a "time when a vegan diet wasn't good for you". A colleague of mine suffers from calcium oxalate kidney stones. I can sense that he wants to go vegan, but says that the high oxalates in plant foods with protein, prevents/excuses him from going vegan. He has cut out meat (because he agrees with my vegan arguments), but still consumes 2 eggs everyday as a source of non-oxalate protein, and drinks cows milk, as replacements are also high in oxalates. Can you help? Thank you SO much for all your videos.

I will say that when I was Vegan I was at a healthy weight without trying. And for the first time in my life, my cholesterol was under 200. I am going back to a Vegan diet NOW. Its not easy giving up dairy! But the more I am reminded of how awful it is for us and even more so for the cows, the easier it is. My brother did end up going back to an "average" North American diet slowly but surely. :-( I added back Dairy and then Fish only. But now I'm going back to Vegan and I'm excited about it. : ))

Hey Mic! What about people who would like to be vegan while having kidney failure? I am a hemodialysis technician and our patients are encouraged to eat as much meat as they can stomach as their protein levels are always too low. Is it possible to have a healthy vegan diet while on Dialysis?
