The speed of light in the air is around 300,000 kps (kilometers per second). In water it is around 225,000 kps, in glass it is around 200,000, in zirconium it is around 190,000 kps, and finally in diamond is around 125,000 kps. Since its speed in water and glass or zirconium are not that much different, glass will be almost invisible in water and zirconium also will disappear to a lesser degree. Diamond on the other hand will be very visible even if it doesn't have any color. Put the gem or the ring in water. If the gem disappears, it is glass or zirconium.

I have a faux diamond ring but it didn't disappear, it was clearly visible underwater. Are you sure that info is right?
@Stefanox366 жыл бұрын
@@thesundaygist5019 As I stated above, there is still a difference between the speed of light in water and in glass. People who make fake stones are very aware of this and they come up with better products every time. Let's take it this way: If your gem doesn't have any colors and disappears completely under water, it IS fake. If it is still visible, it can be diamond, or other material. You have to look at it from different angles and use a source of light. The best way is to compare it under water with a diamond whose authenticity is not in question. You'll see the difference.

@@Stefanox36 i tried this with my genuine diamond earrings and they shone like nyc during christmas. So i tried with my zirconium earrings. they didnt disappear but were faded. those earrings are also bezel setting and thats 14k gold. (piercing earrings) so that maybe why they didnt disappear. I think this would be best tested using rings.

One thing you missed-24K gold is too soft to be usable as jewelry. That's why its mixed with copper, zinc or silver-to give it the strength it needs to be used as jewelry. Someone says they're selling you 24K gold jewelry, you drop that cheap piece of fake gold immediately! Chances are a ring that is designed to someone else's specifications using scrap gold & stones from other jewelry won't have a hallmark or any TM on it. I bought a gorgeous 14K gold & diamond ring from a pawn shop (they can guarantee if an item you buy from them is 10K, 14K or 18K gold and has real diamonds by testing it right in front of you), obviously a 1 of a kind piece, and there's no mark of any sort in it, which makes me think the person who had it made used scrap gold. Real emeralds and rubies usually have "inclusions" in them, meaning they aren't clear and you can often see little darker spots in the stones. Large and CLEAR rubies and emeralds are beyond the ability of most of us to afford! We're getting ripped. Despite what the diamond sellers say, diamonds aren't "rare". Also, the brown and black diamonds we see today (LeVian is a good example of a jewelry company that specializes in the off color diamonds) used to be tossed into the trash heap by miners who considered them worthless!!

Yes. I was told that if you take a colored precious or semiprecious gemstone - think sapphire, ruby or emerald and looking through the back of the piece like with a ring hold it up to sunlight or very good regular lighting and if it looks like either stained glass or has a cobweb type of pattern going through it, it’s lab created. However, if its just the opposite it’s the real deal. When all is said and done, if it looks too good to be true then it probably is. Real gems reflect and refract the light in a certain way that just isn’t otherwise present in lab created jewels. Oh yeah, try to ALWAYS GO FOR QUALITY OVER QUANTITY!! Just remember that a 1 carat D flawless diamond is going to be worth much more than a 3 carat H diamond. Bigger isn’t always better. Figure out what you want and then go for it.

Gold: the higher the karat the more yellow. not magnetic,doesn't have a scent of brass nor copper. Read the stamp where it looks professionally done with no errors and on the lever that keeps the chain/necklace from falling should have a small number of the karat. has a different distinct sound to hear it go to a jeweler and drop it an inch on to a table once u hear it u will knw the sound. And 18k up the weight of it is noticable and heavy for something small if it's solid gold if it's hollow it's very light weight and rounder looking. Silver has its own unique sound as well and more silvery appearance, sound of it is important because if u don't hear it must be nickle mix with other metals. Always look at real items first before buying one that u seen some where else. As well as the price of it

@chinawhite10806 жыл бұрын
I wear mostly sterling silver or white gold jewelry, and found the tip about the ammonia to be false, since there are jewelry cleaners that contain ammonia. I have used diluted ammonia for years to clean my jewelry and it has never made it darker. I use the diluted amonia because I work in nursing, and constant hand washing and applying lotion can clog up your stones or other crevices in rings. The diluted ammonia softens it up, making it easier to use a toothbrush to remove. In fact, ammonia tends to make fake jewelry darker, and BLEACH makes silver/gold tarnish badly. That's why you should always remove jewelry in the presence of bleach. Also, TOOTHPASTE cleans any kind of jewelry very well, as the anti tartar ingredients in it also removes tarnish. Works on real and costume jewelry.

What about sapphires .. how do you spot a fake one ?
@sharid766 жыл бұрын
Since sapphires come in every color of the rainbow, including red, which are just called rubies instead, it's kind of tough to apply one test to check out them all. They aren't horribly expensive either, that is depending on the source country, and the color, so it's even more difficult to be sure if you've got the real deal or synthetic. If you can't tell from your original source, like, who it was purchased from, or at what price, then your best bet is not to depend on "home remedies" types of tests. If you're concerned and need a reliable judgement, then get one from a jewelry store, and at that, from a "real" jewelry store, not a "chain store" or a mall type store. One-owner or local, family owned and operated jewelry stores have one location or perhaps two at the most, which have total dependence on their professional reputation for continued successful operation in their communities, and for those who have been in operation for generations, it's even more important. And, they generally have on staff at least one trained and experienced bench jeweler, if not the owners themselves. It doesn't take more than a few minutes to make that determination. And if you don't want to or can't find such a jewelry store, then most reputable pawn shops must have the resources to tell real from fake, since after all, that is their business! They only deal in genuine metals and genuine stones, and must be able to tell one from the other. So, you have those choices to help you figure it out. How do *I* know? My grandfather was a very talented and knowledgeable gemologist, diamond (and other stones) faceter to the point where he did some custom diamond cutting for Harry Winston, "back in the day" and ran his own shop in the enormous back family room of his and my grandmother's home for many years. It was an amazing place, and he taught me a great deal, before he passed.

Shari I'm so sorry to hear of your disability, you are such a knowledgeable lady your qualifications sound very high, you must have been dedicated and worked very hard to get that .. I've nothing like that ..I just teach a bit here and there, but find it enjoyable and worthwhile. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge on Jem stones and jewellery with me .. best regards Beryl

And if you are smart, you'd be a savvy buyer and get it for so much less than retail.

How about sapphire and ruby you did not include these two precious gems pls make a video how to identify authentic sapphire and ruby thanks.

The best quick way to differentiate rubies and sapphires from fake is to use index oil. However, man made gems may be made of the same material (aluminum oxide). Same index oil test goes for emeralds, since man made emeralds may have intentional inclusions put into them to look "real" under a lens or a microscope. Crooks can be very smart people.

Authentic pearls will feel cool in your hand, whereas a synthetic pearl necklace for example can tend to feel sticky, especially if the weather is warm.

There is a misnomer about synthetic gemstones. They are not fake but lab created. They have the same chemical components as what nature made. The only difference is one is created in the lab the other is naturally made. I can't stand it that people are not educated in knowing about this. Please talk to your jeweler about this. I have spoken to many jewelers and they will tell you the same thing. Synthetic gemstones gives it a bad name. Because it implies that it is of poor quality of stones. With lab created gemstones you can get a very good stone that costs a little less than the real thing and have very nice jewelry. I have many lab created gemstones and they are not fake if this were the case reputable jewelers would not sell you a " fake" gemstone.

Won't a real diamond "cut" glass?

For an expensive purchase, only buy from long-established, reputable jewelers. I like going to locals that have been in business for generations. If it’s a major investment, ask for a sale contingent on appraisal. Then, you choose the appraiser! The item should be transferred directly, using a secure delivery service, from the jeweler to the appraiser and back. It must go under chain-of-custody, to eliminate claims of switch-outs. If it checks out, only then close the deal and take it home.

Quite informative.

For diamonds you can check the hallmark and if the hallmark is CZ this is fake as it stands for cubic zirconia which is a fake stone and considerably less valuable.

Yes I carry a magnet to check. Then fake metals on jewelry smell like iron or metal fake. Good sterling gold or platinum will not smell

If you are wearing foundation, you can rub gold against your face. If it leaves a black mark, it is most likely real.

I heard that if you have a real diamond it will starch glass. Is this true.?
