FYI, "elective mute" is outdated and kind of offensive to people with selective mutism. It was probably in use at the time the story took place though.

Being as this was a nurse who wrote it, I'm just taking her word for it that, at least like you said when the story took place, that was his diagnosis or classification. *shrug* I do my best, but society seems to redefine language every five seconds, and keeping up with it is just not on the top of my list. It something is clearly offensive, I just won't read the word. But when a nurse is writing and using a particular word, it's unlikely I will change it because I figure they would know better than me. *shrug* We do our best out here lol. Thanks for the info, though. It's always nice to have that knowledge moving forward.
