I love that you guys buy what works for you and not buy into the whole “you have to have this” (extremely expensive) stuff and do what most of us do and that is get what we want by doing it ourselves in the budget we can afford. It way more relatable to the average person. Keep up the good work!

@@dennisfreebairn8754 The reason Shauno is telling you about a $3K inverter and a $1K controller is because the company that makes them is paying him to do so. When they talk about specific products on 4WD 24/7 it's an ad 100% of the time. As opposed to this channel about what they're actually doing/achieving on their budget without freebies as part of an endorsement or advertising deal. At least not yet anyway, it's still relatively early days for them and we can't know what the future holds.

Great work. Loved the first aid cabinet idea. I would have put your amp meter after the solar regulator. Also pretty handy to have one on your fridge circuit to give you a cumulative use total (you need to be able to disconnect it from the power source to reset this). Not really necessary for summer camping but super helpful for winter camping or camping in valleys or shade. Reset both at the start of the day and by the end you can see you have had 40ah in and 50ah out. Gives you an idea of how long before you have to go for a drive. Voltage isn't always a good indicator due to surface voltage.

It's turned out quite well, even for a minimal budget. The Anderson plug on the tray is going to fill up with water. You can buy seals for the canopy plug, and mount the tray plug on it's side. You could run the fuse LEDs to the load side of the fuses so that the LED is lit if the fuse is ok, and goes out if it's blown. And cable gland is the name you were looking for.

Brilliant set up, keep it simple and awesome! I'd replace that fuse with a midi fuse if you can, as with corrugations the grub screws can come undone and the wire can slip out. Great for stereos, not great for dual battery systems. This is coming from someone who works at jaycar :P Keep it up guys!

Not bad at all for a budget build, the idea for the first aid box is pretty good, most electrical panels are only a little different but that does what you need, hides your connections and enables access when you need it, nice work, the "grommets" are cable glands and can come in sizes from 8-50mm or so and are great for keeping water and dust out, if you have trouble with 12v sockets falling out, try a marine shop for the marine versions which push in and twist, ive used those for years and plugs dont vibrate out, keep up the good work and nice videos !

Thanks for the video. This is a nice budget power set up for camping. I am looking at setting up something similar. Unfortunately it looks like some of the prices have gone up since doing the video or you managed to get stuff on sale. Bunnings is now selling the small first aid boxes for $39, I couldn't find the out door Anderson plug anywhere near $10 and most of the other ebay stuff was postage on top or an extra $5. Thanks again for taking the time to share your experience and knowlage. Look forward to checking out some of your other videos.

Fantastic video! def gave me ideas as I need exactly the same setup.. Very basic as i came once in a blue moon and would only run a fridge but I already have 2 large solar built into my roof that arent currently being used. I would suggest putting your Solar on a switch to stop over charging the battery ( which may potentially shorten the batteries life span )

Nice job mate, love the budget videos that the average person can relate to. As far as the fuse box goes, your see voltage there because your multimeter / connected lights etc. have a very high internal resistance. The output here will be current limited to the draw of the LED (only a few mA MAX) therefore it's not an issue.
@Darwinpasta
@Darwinpasta 3 жыл бұрын
Yep, came here to say this. Leakage is limited to whatever it takes to run the LED, which isn't enough to run much if anything else. Might confuse the hell out of you later on when you go to troubleshoot something, though.

I know that Anderson Plug is meant to be waterproof but have the socket (battery side) facing upwards will mean it'll collect debris and moisture if the seal were to fail or when the canopy side is plugged in. Rotate 90/180 so that the aforementioned can't happen, it may seem picky but only trying to mitigate any points of failure for the future.

3:25. When you solder the wire into the connector you should also pre tin the wire end (apply solder to the wire) or heat up the wire as well as the connector. That way the solder will adhere properly to the wire and connector. The way you’ve done it could produce a poor connection, adding resistance at that point which will cause heat and voltage drop.

I've got a similar fuse box but purchased from Supacheap or Autobarn. It leaks a little power as well so just because yours came from EBay doesn't make a difference. I need to get one of those monitors for my solar. Also keep an eye on that solar panel. I've heard of a few flying off on the highway.
@BenMitro

Nice and very innovative use of bits...the fuse panel leaks around 0.03mA to the load - its not dangerous and won't kill anything you plug in, except perhaps may vaguely illuminate low wattage led lights but the switches should disable that. Too late to save that nice feature of leds coming on when the fuse is blown...too bad.

Great clip fellas, about to do the same install in my canopy / dog box. One thing I'd like to know ( still waiting for my gang panel to arrive from eBay and getting keen to pre-wire in my head 😆😉 ) is do you have to switch on each switch on so the next one in line effectively works ? I mean, working from left to right, do you need to switch the say, first 4 switches in order for the 5th one to come on ? I've seen wiring diagrams of the back of these panels on eBay and the switches all look like they're kind of "daisy-chained" together being that the far right switch won't work ( no power going to it independently ) unless all the prior left switches are on switched on first. Hope that makes sense .....
