Long Range Deer Hunting 2019. John films Brian and Jacob as they hunt for doe during the second week of the Pennsylvania rifle season in Wildlife Management Unit 2D. The guys are setup for some long range shots with a .243 Ackley Improved rifle which is being used by Brian and a 6.5 Creedmoor used by Jacob who is only 12 years old. First a doe comes out and Brian makes a perfect heart shot on a doe at 239 Yards. Then a doe comes out into a long range foodplot and Jacob drops a doe at 659 yards! Both recover their deer and celebrate a successful hunt!

Mixed feelings about this. Great shooting, seems like a lot of compensation for variables and even though I enjoy watching the connect on a long shot such as this seems like as much technology as skill. Great if your a sniper and I have no ethical objective to killing a deer in this manner but sitting in a heated shack next to a shooting table so far away that the deer don't even spook at the sound of the rifle doesn't quite seem like hunting. Are we missing the true experience of being in the woods and of learning woodsmanship? Reminds me of the virtual hunting controversy several years back. Maybe we could use drones to shoot deer a mile away?

@GastonGross No it's only to a select few ( ignorant people with no sense of right and wrong) who think this is ok. Being "lawful" is the dumbest excuse you can come up with in this situation.. It is neither ethical nor moral and both of those trump what is "lawful". You sound like a kid with no real experience in either of these. HE GUT SHOT THE DEER, how many times does that have to be said before it sinks in? It was a horrible shot that BARELY made a kill shot, the kid got lucky he hit the spine or the deer would be gone.

The first shot was a great shot, but by the look of the trace and impact, the second shot missed its mark by at least 20". It was just very lucky that the bullet hit spine and didnt just wound it. He's not ready to be ethically hunting that distance quite yet.

He actually hit the femural artery and it bled out, I think the problem was actually the bullet, I don't think a .300 win mag would have much of a problem to that range with a heavier bullet to get less wind, the first shot was an incredible shot and I'm surprised a deer could live with a baseball sized hole where its heart was

Awesome shot and love the videos. I feel compelled to leave a comment that I hope is helpful. Please use quality hearing protection with every shot even when hunting. Please note that if you shoot a rifle with a muzzle brake, every single shot without hearing protection causes permanent hearing loss! It is obvious that father loves and educates his son, so I would please ask that all use quality electronic muffs while hunting. They are inexpensive these days and it will pay off for decades. Thanks for considering this comment in the spirit it is offered.

I'm happy for the young man but I can't get past the fact that it was a gut shot. At 600+ yards it doesn't take much wind to move the bullet from the boiler room to the guts. He was lucky to recover that deer. I shoot 600 yds competitively every summer and holding a 6" circle is what we shoot for but a change of wind of just a few mph will move you out 12" or better.. I find extreme range deer hunting in unknown wind conditions to be marginally ethical at best.

Yes I saw the video and yes I heard them say he practiced at that range but it doesn't matter when the shot he took and placement were horrible. This isn't hunting it's just target practice on live animals. They have no respect for the animal and no respect for hunting. Why do they need to be that far in the first place? They don't. Why not move down closer to make a shorter shot and one that has less chance of something going wrong. I'm sure if you see this your reply will be just like your other stupid comments.

Welp... those hams are ruined for sure. Did it cause the deer to die, sure it did. However, I'd call that a bad shot cause it's way outside your ability to read the wind. Should have trained the kid to hit vital zone size targets only at that range and greater so he can learn to read and judge the wind. Maybe shouldn't have posted this vid since it was a gut/hip shot. Also that's about the laziest hunting I've seen. Whatever happened to stalking your prey instead of sitting in a heated hotel room built in the forest. That's not hunting.

Shock wave. Bullets don’t have engines to make vapor. Although 6.5cm flies like an icbm. :)

B Laws actually vapor trails don’t come from an engine. The come from a change in air pressure. An airplane has them from doing some sort of maneuver that disrupts normal air flow.

B Laws upon further inspection, it seems we are both correct. A projectiles shock wave creates a vapor trail due to a change in air pressure.

Vapor trails from an airlplane do come from their means of propulsion and are seen as the spent hydrocarbons are suddenly subjected to massive changes in temp, moisture, velocity and pressure. Rockets and missiles can emit vapor trails also. Airplane Vapor trails or Contrails, which you point to, are a good example of the principle. In some cases the airflow also can condense water to become visible and liquid in state. However- The bullet flight in the video is a clearly shown shock wave bending the atmosphere not only around and behind it, but from a different angle with a good slow motion camera, would have shown that shock or pressure wave pushing out from the projectile also. That said, it was very cool to see. For fun pull up some slomo bullet videos. You’ll see the shape of the wave change as the bullet leaves the muzzle and enters free ballistics.

I don't usually say bad thing about fellow hunters but that was an idiotic shot to take and it showed, way back on the deer and high. This is not what we want to teach the younger shooters to attempt when hunting. I can not congratulate this kid on a lucky shot, not even close to the vitals on that deer.

@@beanz4505 659 yds and you think it's the scope? I would never take that shot myself because I couldn't do it confidently. When a young man is polished enough to take that shot with authority, it's a crying shame to attribute the accomplishment to the equipment. He is on the track young and whether or not his decisions track with anybody else's ethics, they are his decisions and that's a hell of a long shot if you have the hubble telescope mounted, so celebrate with him, yeah?

lucky to hit the spine. otherwise, the deer would have had a long lingering gut shot death. shot was no where close to the chest cavity.

This comment may not fair well with everyone. I love your guys videos and have been a fan for years. No doubt 2 great shots extremely impressive, and exceptional firearms and scopes. But at what point can we look at each other and ask “is this hunting” shooting a deer 600+ yards away don’t have to worry about scent, don’t have to be quiet, and basically everything that can be seen is in range. What’s the challenge?
