But at his age My best friend (from Middle School) and I hiked the Bristlecone Pines Trail, California White Mountains, at around 11,000ft to see a 4,000 year old Tree, but those days are now nothing more than a memory, and something to brag about I guess..This was a interesting Trek and he did get out for some beautiful countryside and set a record at the same time.

Good fun! A converted WIFI Grid antenna will double that range again. Rule of thumb is, 6dB = double the range. Show your experiment to the local Ham Radio club!
@AndreasSpiess7 жыл бұрын
Actually, the link budget is so high with this technology that 6 db do not matter a lot (I did not believe it at first). So, the only thing which matters is line of sight. The link budget is good for more than 1000 km (without antenna gain, because this is legally not allowed on this free band). BTW: I am also a (inactive) Ham.
@SteveWrightNZ7 жыл бұрын
I think there are more toys on the free bands than on the ham bands now - it is a very interesting time to play with any radio and electronics gear. The 6dB rule always applies - If you can find 6dB, you get double the range.
@AndreasSpiess7 жыл бұрын
+Steve Wright In this experiment I had a connection from one place and no connection 100 m away from where I was. The difference between line of sight an no line of sight is easily 50 or more dB. You can simulate this using the link in the description. So, in theory you are of course right. But only, if all other parameters do not change. And this is not the case here because the earth is not flat ;-) And I was at the outmost possible point where the earth did not interfere with the waves.

I like your antenna test! I spent some years doing radio propagation tests professionally. Don't underestimate the weather... We experienced small UHF radios working over 700km. We think it was caused by cold dry air from the stratosphere meeting warm humid air from the ground and making a perfect mirror or conduit. And it's normally longer than line of sight - check out the 4/3 rule. So good luck with a really long record. And Happy Birthday!
@AndreasSpiess8 жыл бұрын
+Mike Hudson Thanks. I know this from 144MHz. Up to which frequency did you see this? What is the 4/3 rule?
@mikehudson36208 жыл бұрын
Andreas Spiess Hi. I was surveying in the UHF band - around 400MHz. We did not think it was the normal temperature inversion as the effect was so extreme. On some days, it affected the microwave line-of-site transmissions which were using diversity antennas separated vertically by about 10m. You could detect the layer passing down through the beams. The 4/3 rule increases line of sight due to the refraction caused by the atmosphere. You used to be able to get curved paper for plotting the hills between two antennae which allowed for this and showed if they would interfere. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-line-of-sight_propagation Short wave has a club "The million miles per watt" club - for very serious long distance propagation using the stratosphere. Propagation is fun and very challenging. Good luck and thanks for your very interesting videos.
@AndreasSpiess8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the link. I uses a few of the described things as a radio operator. But so far, I did not hear that the air inversions also work on 900 MHz. On 144, I was able to reach England from Switzerland, but with 50 W output and a Yagi. Somebody wrote, that he was able to reach Spain from Ireland on 868 MHz with a Sigfox device (25mW). This is more than 1000 km. I am not sure if I should believe it...
@Cicuiranu8 жыл бұрын
Andreas Spiess yes you can believe it. Duct propagation over sea is really huge. Sometimes the vhf bacon of cabo verde can be heard in spain. That's more than 2500 km i think.
