I run a jet ski shop in Fort Worth Texas I've been building these motors for over 20 years and makes your life much easier with the Piston Ring inserts to wrap them with thin layers of velcro tightly and then you can just slide the headright on one person velcro will slide off as the head slides on and then just under the velcro from around the rods

good idea!

I rebuild dirt bikes, what would help a lot is applying some 2 stroke premix to the cylinder walls making things easier to slide in.

When I build these motors (sometime even in the hull) I always start with cylinder 3 for the first piston I put in jugs. So much easier (also do it without help) try then your next time. Good video.

Use Velcro straps to compress the piston rings on all three then slide the headright on your welcome for that piece of hundred-thousand-dollar advice
@A-mechanics-review-4U3 жыл бұрын
Giant zip ties work better than Velcro just pull it tight on the piston obviously covering both rings at once then once it’s just far enough up in the cylinder with the extra piece having already been Cut off, cut the zip tie and pull out I did this on a GPR 1300 front cylinder without taking offThe middle cylinder
@shannonwilliams6013 жыл бұрын
@@A-mechanics-review-4U giant zip ties will not pull perfectly round also they are expensive the velcro you can use over and over velcro is far better

Hi. Thanks for posting, very helpful! I bought a used 2001 xl800. Front cylinder piston has small amount of scoring, chip in top of piston, rear cylinder is fine other than a bit of slop. Measured with micrometer, front measured 79.67mm and rear was 79.95mm. Looks like stock nikasil, so I should be able to just order standard pistons and light hone? Thanks!
@5StarPWC5 жыл бұрын
Yes, that should work but you should be looking at your carbs also.

@@5StarPWC Thanks. After removing heads, that cylinders piston was chunked and severly gouged the lower cylinder. Couldnt see it when I originally posted because I hadnt removed heads at that time. I purchased some stock pistons, one new iron sleeve, and will have a local machine shop insert sleeve and hone. I bought the premix block off kit and mikuni 44 rebuild kits also. Thanks again for the vid!

Best way to apply any Gasket Maker or Engine bond is to use an industrial syringe. Much more control and much cleaner bead. The syringes with the industrial flat tip needles are less than 1$ a piece on amazon.

I wouldn't use anywhere near that much rtv. It gets in the engine and messes up things. If anything, I coat the gaskets in grease. If you ever need to take the engine apart again, the gaskets come right off.
