Actually, Washington did not ask Gouverneur Morris to be the first Secretary of the Treasury. He asked *Robert* Morris, who had been fulfilling the same role in the Continentall Congress. He also asked John Jay to serve at State, probably because Jay had been serving in that role in the Continental Congress. But Jay preferred to head up the first Supreme Court.
