LET'S PLANT!
EP 124 - I built a huge raised garden bed for my succulents, what next?
Earlier this week, I had a delivery of soil and scoria from SoilWorx. It took me a few days to finish hauling what was 2 cubic meters worth.
I normally use a 1:1 scoria to soil ratio for my in-ground soil mix, but in this case I went with a slightly higher ratio of 1.2:1 scoria to soil. This allows me better flexibility with my choice of plants, and I don't have to redo the mix in the long run.
Following the design I set out for my garden bed, I fixed the foot path heights, put the rocks in their proper places, and I filled in the bed.
Now I have a huge blank garden bed to work with, and I can't wait to get planting!
Get 10% of pots and potting mix at SoilWorx Deer Park. Mention "Cerriscapades" at checkout!

Big thanks to SoilWorx for supplying me with the soil and scoria. If you're in Melbourne, you can get 10% off pots and potting mix from SoilWorx at their Deer Park branch by mentioning "Cerriscapades".

You should put some pylons or 3-4 foot posts/stumps in the middle of things to put pots of hanging succulents on, that's be a nice way to raise things up and give you different sight lines. Also some stuff hanging on the fence (if it's yours to hang stuff from). It would look cool to have stuff at that height as well.....might be a way to reduce all the pots you have on shelves, etc.

I'm in the US, so I don't know what kind of rot-free trees you could use as posts, but it occurred to me after watching like 200 of your videos that you might need some height in your builds....would look visually very cool, at least to me. Even rusted metal sculptures for them to hang from. Maybe succulent balls? Who knows, you're VERY creative Chuck! @@Cerriscapades

@@1erickjon yeah I've always wanted to do pylons. I've got a friend who had these meter-tall pylons made for her golden barrels. I've been hesitating because to keep it stable, it means I need to create a sturdy base. My friend went with the concrete route. I don't think I want to commit to that design yet unless I know the plants I will use there are getting enough sunlight. So maybe next time. I agree with you about placing some height though. That spot at the back is not getting enough sunlight, and raising the plants here will give them that. Maybe for starters I can just stack some bricks, blocks, or timber. Maybe I can hack together a little stand out of sturdy timber. Lots of possibilities!

You could certainly sink in some posts made from wood, like fence posts that wouldn't need concrete and put something like moss lined wire baskets on top of them or create some sort of cradle to put a pot in at the top. It would look so cool.@@Cerriscapades

I'm planning to have my succulents planted directly in my garden. But I don't know if they will thrive outdoor knowing the weather here in the Philippines😅 one day it's sunny and who knows when it's gonna have a non stop rain😅. I'm planning to install my DIY greenhouse since I don't have much budget to sustain my unstoppable plant collecting habit LOL.

Yeah, I usually go with a much lower concentration of scoria, but in this case I just went higher so I don't have to worry about it anymore.

Chuck you have such a beautiful garden. Would you consider painting your wood fence to just give your already spectacular garden that little finishing touch? All the best with your new planting.

I think I will do that last. I'm still not sure what would be best to complement the garden I'm building. But that's a good idea!
