Once you swapped out that board, I was just certain that you would eventually fix that bad board. It's just not your nature to set it aside. What a challenge! Just don't waste too many components trying to fix it. When I unsolder using solder wick, I usually use some flux on the solder wick. I use resin flux which is a paste. That converter to the right of the one you're working on looks like it's toasted as well. I knew you would fix it. Great job, Peter. Cheers & 73 from W Rusty Lane K9POW in eastern Tennessee

Hi Peter, just want to say thank you for your great videos. I’ve been using the Icom 7100 as my tutorial to repair a Icom 7300 which was over-volted. In my case there was no sign of any damaged components. In the end I had to replace the Power Amplifier board due to a short in the multilayer board, then change a buck converter and 8v volt regulators on the Mainboard. So thank you again and keep the videos going. Steve. M6KPP

So, did the owner chose to have the board repaired instead of replaced? It was fortunate that, all in all, a DC-DC converter and two chip inductors were damaged. Imagine that the DC-DC converter didn't failed safely, and took everything south with it. Kudos to Texas Instruments for that!

Nice repair. Particularly enjoyed the trace through the schematic to arrive at the defective parts in the prior episode. In the end I think I would have added a small protector circuit, such as a 15V zener opening the NC contacts of a relay on the power inlet line, to prevent the over-voltage situation from recurring in the future.

Hello Peter, you did a very nice job on repairing. Noted that the operation voltage range of IC7100 is DC13.8V +/- 15% ( max. 15.87V ). Is it still safe if I fit it to 4 cells Li battery ( max. 16.8V ) ? Min. workable voltage of IC7100 is 10.5V. 3 cells Li battery can't be used. I saw the max. voltage of TPS62110 is 20V. Thank you!

Nice repair, certainly an interesting one to try and sort out, although I would of heated the PCB before placing the part to get it warmed up better under the device. Personally I don't like solder wick, I find it harder to use, and as you had it tends to stick the the pads if not hot enough, I prefer to use solder sucker or vacuum desoldering iron.
@TRXLab
@TRXLab 8 жыл бұрын
Well anyone has its own way but did you really ever cleaned SMD pads of this size with a solder sucker or vacuum desoldering iron?? The only way to get the surface for SMD's ready and nicely flat for a new component is with solder wick . 73
@mikesradiorepair
@mikesradiorepair 8 жыл бұрын
TRX Bench Pace makes a tip for their desoldering handpiece. It's called the Flo-D-Sodr tip. It's made specifically for cleaning off SMD pads. I speak from experience when I say it works flawlessly and makes for extremely fast solder cleanup and no chance of pad damage. I was sold the first time I used one.

With all you hear about heat on computer parts yet you heat the chip hot enough to melt solder but the chip still works ?
@TRXLab
@TRXLab 8 жыл бұрын
Well Scott there are to much bull shit out there...but anyway one point is true components should not get overheated and if you want to do it perfectly right you need to follow the temperature profile given by the factory. other than that this chips are produced to get heat from above like all BGA chips... 73
