That was an oil spout. Plastic bottles of oil came out in about the mid 1980s. I remember doing oil changes for my parents. The oil came in cardboard cans, with metal ends. The spout pierced the end to get the oil out.

Really appreciate you shooting video of this 1973 Peterbilt truck save. Looking forward to watching you work on this. You made me feel old and smile that you didn't know what that old oil can spout was. That was a hoot! Love that you put that in. Oil was originally sold in glass bottles in 1910s-1930s. Then for 50 years oil was sold in steel cans into 1980s. Back in the day you'd push that spout thru one end of an oil can and pour. Since 1980s consumer oil is either mostly sold in plastic containers, or 5 gal. buckets with pop-up spout. Been years since I thought about old oil can spouts. Keep up the good work!

Motor Oil and ATF was still commonly sold in cardboard cans with metal ends (Quarts, and Gallons for motor oil, Pints, and Quarts for ATF and all Metal cans for Anti-Freeze) until the late 1980's early 1900's.

Great find/acquisition. When I was first getting started in this field I worked for International Harvester. At that time IH was selling the Transtar 4070A with engines up to Cummins NTC 350 or Detroit 8V71T. If you saw a tall Transtar designated as 4090A, it had a 12V71 Detroit in it. Yeah, I also had to smile when you could not identify that oil can spout. The type of hose you couldn't remember is either Aeroquip or Stratoflex. Both companies made similar products and both companies had their beginnings in aviation, as is reflected in the names of both brands of hose.
@johnnycomelately59143 жыл бұрын
I worked on hundreds of those 352's. Good find. Although I've worked on many of those V 12's, the Pete's I serviced had mostly NH Cummins and a few Cats. The luberfiner is serviced with the cab jacked up. Make sure you bleed the air out of the filter by loosening the center bolt on the cover, leaving it screwed in a few turns and running the truck til the oil starts to seep out, then tighten the bolt down. The handle for the cab jack was nothing more than a piece of pipe maybe 3/4 inch diameter that's about 16 inches long and slides over the shaft on the jack. Those jacks always leaked, so never leave home without some extra tranny fluid and a tiny funnel. Check the aluminum battery box supports on either side. They use to crack and then goodbye batteries and air tanks. You have air ride, so you may be okay there. Less hammering. The passengers window is air operated. Make sure the shift handle is centered when you lower the cab so it goes up inside of the slot. Good luck with your project. One other thing. I'd run a bungee cord from the door handle to the striker if you plan on opening up the door with the cab up. It will keep the pressure off of the strap that keeps the door from opening too far. The screws that secure the strap use to rip out.
@Ol2Stroker3 жыл бұрын
I need to rebuild the remote housing thats why i had to put it in gear at the end of the video. Its the only way it doesn't get caught on the cab. I broke the range selector off the shifter so I'll buy a nos shift knob somewhere 😥
@johnnycomelately59143 жыл бұрын
@@Ol2Stroker I use to barely crack the up/down selector on the pump in the down position so the cab slowly dropped and then ran around and held the shifter so it didn't get caught in the cab. Then once it was above the opening, I'd run back around and pull on the safety latch cable and hold that so the latch cleared the striker. I always gave the jack a few pumps in the down position after it was down all the way so the latch would have a little pressure clamping it down tight against the rubber pads I'm new to your videos, so I don't know how much you know/don't know, but I wouldn't take that safety bar for granted that's above the cab piston on the ditch side. I suggest you never play around under the cab unless it's latched.
@Ol2Stroker3 жыл бұрын
@@johnnycomelately5914 maaaaan i wish i took a pic of that safety latch before i removed it and fixed it. I don't mess around with that shit man that thing is always latched. Preciate ya.
@johnnycomelately59143 жыл бұрын
@@Ol2Stroker Yeah, some of those hand pumps have been converted to electric pumps too. That Peterbilt Air Spring is a nice set up, and common on other trucks as well. When they first came out, there was a problem with the rear end housing shifting side to side because the paddles would loosen and jump the center bold stud. I've seen a few that had shifted so much that it drove the inside tire into the spring and blew the tire. Take a look around the paddles and look for rust trails. If you see rust, that means they are loose. If you ever change a spring (they're cheap to buy) after you tighten the bolts up, and run the truck a few days, go back and re-tighten them. Put a wrench on the rear cab mounts where they mount to the cab to make sure they are tight. Again, where you have Air Ride you may be okay, but they use to loosen up sometimes. I'll keep thinking of things that were problems with those trucks. Overall, they were in my opinion the best truck out here at the time where in most states 55 feet was the max for length. I maintained a fleet of them,(45 352's, a few 353's Freightliners, and Internationals) and if something comes to mind, I'll post. It may save you headaches later.

I usually just cut a little triangle in the can with my jackknife and used a funnel. I'm a little older than you but i don't remember seeing those cardboard cans with the metal lids past maybe my mid teens which was mid eighties. Wow i feel old old now. My farm semi has a 12.7 series 60 i bought with just over a million miles on it a few years ago. I found records that they did a head gasket around 800k. It runs like a top. Nice truck!!! I'm not a patina fan, so I would see about polishing out that paint, and then touching it up. An airbrush, or even rattle cans in the right hands, could make that baby look a lot closer to new. It looks like they had gold and red stripes bordering the light blue stripes on the cab, and then they carried the red and gold theme onto those sweet-ass aluminum frame rails. I'd love to see that paint job the way it looked 45 years ago. I think '73 was about the last year they ran the air intake plumbing through the cabs? I originally thought that those chrome exhaust stack supports were dual air intakes with the tops removed for clearance, like the exhausts. So I got a little confused when I saw that plumbing in that compartment under the sleeper.
@Ol2Stroker3 жыл бұрын
Anybody touches something like this with a rattle can they deserve to have their arms cut off. Lol they did intakes through the cab till at least 74 because i had a 74 v12 with just that. Congratulations, that truck is BAD ASS! Can you imagine being the one checking off the specs on that build sheet? That thing was ONE LARGE RIDE back in the day! Those steps on the tanks are pretty unique, when I first saw only the one side, I thought it was bent...but both sides match don't they? I wonder if that twisted bar you were wondering about is the extension handle for the lug wrench...I used to carry a lug wrench like that and just poked a pointed bar through the hole for leverage... Awesome find Wayne, can't wait to follow the journey!

Maaaan i was just sitting here wondering if thats what that bar was. Thats badass because thats all the factory tooling. The only thing she's missing is the handle for the cab jack pump. I have yet to own a cabover that still had it and this is like my 5th or 6th one! Thanks for the kind words bud, if anyone cares I'll print out the line sheet and go over it on camera. Yes the other side step matches... i thought they were bent too ive never seen em like this.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned it to you but the starter may be 24V. I say that because that electrical switch where the battery cables run to( mounted to the luberfiner), looks like a parallel switch. It switches the batteries to 24v for the starter and 12v for the rest of the systems.

Oh yea its definitely 24v start. Most guys hate em but i wouldn't have one without it!
