13,000+ Feet Up in the San Juans Mountains | Colorado ZR2s | Episode 2

We explore the San Juan Mountains in Colorado with our friend Richard in his previous generation Colorado ZR2. In this episode, we do some of the most iconic trails in the area such as Red Mountain Pass, Ophir Pass, Imogene Pass, and more! I think the red truck might need some frame reinforcement. The bed bouncing on that first obstacle looked a little rough, hopefully bed didn’t hit the cab.

center of balance on those "roof top" tents is absolutely insane. leaves me good reason to stick with a ground unit. big respect for not pushing your buddy beyond his (current) limits.

Yeah you have to learn how they behave. Ground tent is definitely the way to go if you aren't out as much and also way cheaper. 😅 We used ground tents all the time years ago, but as we started doing this way more frequently, a setup like this works perfect for us.

Love the Colorado ZR2 content. Keep making videos man you and a few others are the only ones bringing out ZR2 stuff in a SEA of JEEP Gladiator material. Loved this video cause it had my two favorite trucks Gen 2 and Gen 3 Colorado ZR2S. I own a 2018 ZR2 and would like to get the new one at some point. I will agree with another poster about the red truck rear end flexing very badly with the weight of the tent and gear, without a frame reenforcement that is a disaster waiting to happen. The weak point of the Gen 2 that I hope they fixed on the new one. Great video and the views and scenery was awesome

My family has been running those trails for 20 years and it's cool to see you guys enjoying the same views. We never considered camping up on the trails though. We always get a spot at the KOA in Ouray. In the early years we used to camp right in Ouray at Timber Ridge, but now they cater to mostly big rigs. No space for tents or small popup trailers :) Also, I just picked up my brand new 2024 Colorado ZR2! I was supposed to have it for our trip at the beginning of August but it was delayed at the manufacturing plant for 2 months, waiting for parts. Oh well, next year! It's great to see how capable yours is even with all that overland gear and rooftop camper.

Have you had any scraping issues with your 35s? Also, any modifications to run 35’s?

I have slight rubbing in the front at specific steering angles under articulation, but that's due to my aggressive 0 offset. I just have a 1" lift on the front and a 1" shackle lift in the rear

Is that rubbing I hear in the front at 0:48? Are you running 315's? OEM offset or more "poke" (negative offset I guess that would be)? I'm planning on going to 285/75/17's on the OEM rims. I think the majority of time people get rubbing is because of the more aggressive offset and running wider tires. Just from looking, and sticking my finger in there while the tire is turned all the way (stopped of course), it looks like I have at least 1" of clearance and as the 285/75's are only 1/2" bigger on a radius, I should be good. I plan on getting the Bison jounce damper kit, which I guess comes with a 1/2" shim to raise the rear. You're definitely doing more difficult stuff than I'd even try at this stage of my wheeling experience, but maybe I'll get there someday. Great vid as always!

It is rubbing and I am running 315s. The rubbing is caused by my aggressive offset, I'm running 0 offset. It only rubs at a certain steering angle with the suspension articulating. You'll get to this stuff eventually. It's a slow build up of experience and you'll be hitting these types of trails in no time!

@@outlandishoverland Ah, thanks! I figured from the look it was the offset and size. I think I should be fine then with the narrower tire and OEM offset. I think the only thing I might want to do there, is find the lightest wheels I can with the standard offset and width, to gain some back performance lost with the heavier tires. Dunno if I'll ever get to stuff that difficult, I'm 60, and am happy doing easy/moderate stuff so I can go longer distances, rather than doing tougher stuff but having to go a lot slower. Plus, I always travel solo, so, I never have a spotter. I bought the ZR2 for the capability to get me through or out of nasty situations in case I ever found myself in one. I recently did Hideout Canyon and Gemini trails this year, and think that while I did ok on those, no mistakes, I think maybe just a little more challenging will be all I'm interested in doing, but we'll see.
