The question is 800mm f/5.6L IS USM or 600mm f/4L IS III USM? The extra 200mm of focal length is great, but it is also almost 1.5kg heavier than the 600mm. I am guessing some would say the 600mm with a 1.4x extender at 840mm should be enough to save that 1.5kg of weight plus having the advantage of a larger aperture at f/4. I think shooting animals with the 800mm is great, but if we are talking about bird photography which is quite specialized I think you would probably need the bigger aperture to help boost shutter speed to stop the bird. Unless may be if the bird is almost stationary such as an eagle chick in the nest for example. Just my guess.

Hey Daniel, I could be wrong, but I was told you have to switch off the IS when you use a tripod? Likewise, I am also into wildlife, well more like bird photography as there aren't much wildlife over here apart from birds. I have also acquired a large carbon fiber tripod with 40mmm top legs and a gimbal head. While I consider myself to be a keen photographer I am still essentially a hobbyist, as such I can't see myself dropping US$13K on a huge prime anytime soon. Currently, I am using the Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary. Once you have shot at 600mm on full frame or in my case 960mm with a Canon APS-C body I find it really hard to walk it back to a lens with shorter focal length. But, I am curious, I understand while they are discontinued, Sigma has two intriguing lenses, one nicknamed as the "Sigmonster" 300-800mm f/5.6 as well as a 800mm f/5.6 prime. Both are massively cheaper than the Canon 800mm f/5.6 granted their quality are inferior given the age of these lenses. In fact, the prime is now even slightly cheaper than the zoom. I wonder whether you could locate those lenses and do a review on them? It should be pretty interesting. I have found a place in Hong Kong still selling that Sigma 800mm f/5.6 for merely US$4,516, 2.4 times cheaper than the Canon. If it isn't too bad, I might consider buying it actually.

I try to test the SIGMA lenses in the near future. Haven‘t done to much with SIGMA for the last three years. Which camera did you get? Daniel

Regarding turning off IS when using the tripod, If there's any wind at all you definitely want to turn on IS or enhanced digital IS with your camera body even when using a tripod

Of course for Wildlife. But it is a pain due to the weight, I had already troubles when traveling with the 600mm 4.0 through the forests here in Yunnan province in southern China close to Myanmar border. And the 800mm is 700g higher in weight...what a hell. On the other hand...this lens really rocks. Forget all the speeches about TC1.4 on a 600mm offering the same sharpness as a 800mm lens. That is definitely not true. The 800mm is simply outstanding from IQ and AF performance. The 600mm with TC1.4 cannot reach this level.

I want to see this on an 80+ megapixel RF system. They are working on a 600mm native RF lens, but so far, nothing larger. I am so excited about the super telephoto lenses coming with to the RF, especially the 400mm 2.8. I haven't heard anything about a 200mm RF prime lens though, crossing my fingers for f1.8

Cool lens. Would love to try this some time. I think the 400mm f2.8 and both teleconverters 1.4X and 2X are a better deal, especially for sports. I do have a media friend who uses this lens extensively getting up close and personal photos of firefighters etc.

Zoom is a bad thing to measure something by, zoom just means the ratio between the longest focal length to the shortest. e.g. Canon 18-135mm is 7.5x zoom Canon 100-400mm is 4x zoom Despite the 18-135mm having a larger zoom, the 100-400 has the longer focal length. If anything this 800mm has a 1x zoom.

Too long (800mm) and slow (f5.6) for the vast majority of subjects, excluding daytime wildlife or daytime paparazzi. Buy a pro body (1D) instead. The current Canon tele-converters (Version III) do not reduce picture quality at all. No complaints. The new version of the Canon 600mm f4 lens (600mm f4 L IS II) is a superb lens. The older version (600mm f4 L IS) was _not_ good, and Canon told me that themselves. I'd wait until the end of 2018 (or 2018 Photokina) before buying any new Canon long white glass... there's new Canon lenses on the way, including a small 600mm f4 DO lens. (That lens should've been announced by now when you consider that test-prototypes have been seen in public for a couple of years!)
