Hey Chad! My textbook discusses osmotic pressure relative to the terms 'hypertonic vs. hypotonic.' For example, "If one solution is of lower osmotic pressure, it is hypotonic with respect to the more concentrated solution." In your example, would the left side of the U-shaped tube be considered hypotonic and have a lower osmotic pressure compared to the right side of the U-shaped tube? If so, would the piston on the left side, therefore, have an osmotic pressure that is less than 48.9 atm? I hope this makes sense, it sounded crazy in my head, but typing it out, it sounds even crazier. Thanks in advance!

Exactly right! You could say the solution on the left is hypotonic to the one on the right and therefore has an osmotic pressure that is 48.9atm lower. Or you could say that the solution on the right is hypertonic to the one on the left and has an osmotic pressure that is 48.9atm higher. As far as the pistons go, the piston on the right is being pushed upward with a pressure of 48.9atm whereas the one on the left is being pulled downward (assuming an air-tight seal) with a pressure of -48.9atm. Hope this helps!
