I know it’s a older Vidja but just saying, I’ve shot my 16” 556 to 1K a few times, my last time there was a guy ringing steal at 1K with a 14.5” with a 1-8 ATACR. I feel you could do it just not a practical range for any 556 setup. You could build a 14.5 6.5 CM or 6.5 Grendel

My preferred light setup for an 11.5 -14.5 fighting AR with a red dot/holographic: - Modlite 18350 body (saves a little space and weight, retains rechargeable batteries) - Surefire KE2-DF head (wide flood, warm light, good lumens, decent enough throw for 100+ yard target/weapon ID) - Surefire DS00 tailcap (reduncdancy in the case of wire or switch failure) - Arisaka inline mount at 1:30 (or 45 degree mount from 3:00 upwards depending on handguard) - Unity hotbutton for picatinny at 12:00, mounted in relation to your foregrip in order to a) give room for c-clamp/partial thumb over bore, b) leave enough clearance to not accidentally turn the light on, and c) to not compromise your grip when activating the light. This is the setup I use on my 13.9 criterion/BCM based build. I can reach the pressure switch or the secondary tailcap button with my thumb without having to loosen/change my support hand grip to any considerable degree. For a magnification-based use case AR, i'd suggest a throw head like the Modlite OKW or Cloud Defensive Rein gen 3. But beware that the Cloud lights use their own proprietary accessories. 18650 light bodies become a heavy consideration too, if you have the railspace on a midlength or rifle length build, plus you get longer battery life. As a side note, I chrono'd my 13.9" Criterion core barrel (headspaced BCM bolt) and got ~3,050 FPS averages with IMI 55gr 5.56 FMJ and a Winchester 62gr open tip 5.56 military export training load. That is some *spicy* velocity at 13.9". Also got about 2,800 fps with AAC 69gr OTM's and ~2,750 fps with IMI 77gr razercore. In my mind this makes the arguement for a longer barrel a bit moot as I can have a high quality barrel pinned and welded to 16" that *can* reach out to 400-500 yards at those velocites with similar effectiveness on soft tissue to the vast majority of 16"-18" barrels on the market, while not making home defense/CQB cumbersome due to size.

I have a Valhalla Tactical Baldr SOL + ODA mini (18350) and a Modlite PLH-V2 (from my Modlite PL350). I wanted the 18650 size but they were sold out so I just cannibalized one of the PL350’s I have to mount a better light on my lightweight AR than the Olight PL-Pro Valkyrie. I need to get a dual Surefire switch & mount so I can mount up my Atibal Illumination long range light on my 16.1” LWRCi. My LGS has a Mod-button but I like the backup of the tailcap button on the dual switch.

13.7/13.9” is my go to rifles, that 2” makes a huge difference that won’t be noticed until you wield a 16” then pick up the 13.7”. The Odin is fine, if you want to upgrade can go with the modlight and the HRF concepts RAMP or try Cloud Defensive.

I will agree in the hand, there is a noticeable difference when switching between the two lengths. I forgot about Cloud Defensive, going to check them out!

Valhalla tactical has a light for $189.95 shipped to your door 58k candela, 1600 lumens, lifetime warranty, fully Ambi with 18350 and 18650 options I have one on my 13.9, can’t beat the price/performance on that light

I have a 14.5 Bcm. I can send it to get it cut to 13.7 but will that cause issues? My 14.5 is mid length gas system.

You can’t go wrong with modlite. I run both modlite and surefire’s. I prefer the modlite with mod button light pressure pads.

Love my modlite setup pretty expensive though. I’d go with either that, surefire, or streamlight for a more budget option. Glad you’re getting rid of the olight 😂

did you have to shim that surfire to get it to 16?

You can shim it or use a crush washer but yes just a little bit to get it to the 16”. Gotta make sure if you used a crush washer that the barrel is concentric with the supressor so you don’t get a baffle strike. Use a rod and place it in the barrel and suppressor to make sure free movement and then remove before shooting.

I love that rig! 13.7-14.5 is where it’s at for me. I’ve got a 13.7 CMT complete upper and 13.9 aero/SOLGW/ & BCM FDE MCMR I need to put the finishing touches on.

I’ve heard so many good things about SOLGW and I almost bought their 13.7 barrel but it was out stock for like months when I was trying to build this rifle so I got the rosco haha 13.7-14.5 is the master class for AR barrels haha
