I think male or females playing the opposite sex, only shows how committed they are to their art. How well they do it, shows how good of an actor/actress they are.

I think the issue a lot of people have, is that actual trans people very often don't get to play in a lot of movies, wether it is for a cis role or a trans role. They think that someone that actually, lived through a transition or other issues surrounding being trans, would be better at playing a trans character.
@DeepMoonChild5 жыл бұрын
@@nellisouki5407 Yes, I agree that trans people don't get enough chances in the industry, that IS a problem. I am just saying that they shouldn't be limited to playing just trans people because they have been through that. That doesn't mean that they wouldn't be very convincing in playing cis characters. That also applies vice versa. And THAT is the point of my comment. If we continue on a path of overloaded sensitivity in EVERYTHING, we will eventually get to the point where blondes, even when they die their hair, can't play a brunette character because "they don't really know what it's like to truly be brunette".

Yes I think an ideal world that would be the case but your not taking in the power dynamic. Cis actors that play trans roles get oscars while trans actors rarely get cast in Cis roles or any roles . Also the violence against trans people only is a serious issue since many justify this violence against trans women by saying their men in dresses. Having a Cis male actor can just illustrate this transphobic role . Also Jeffry sexually assaulted one of the trans women on that show! Also a lot of this roles are used for comedy . I think trans people could bring more to this roles but as a non binary person I’m yet to see a Cis actor that has brought authenticity to the roles .

Fact of the matter is.. It’s harder to get a trans actor during casting who fits the character description and who can also act good within the time required.. that’s 3 types of criteria for the role already as population of trans is very slim. Transgenders are typically picked for Tv shows instead of movies from my experience of findings. For example in the Netflix series The OA, there’s a transgender on it who plays as a transgender character named Buck and the creator Brit Marling was looking specifically in casting for a half Asian American transguy, she had to get through 400 people in order to find one. It’s not entirely about being mainstream alone, it just sells better if a non transgender reputable actor does the job because these transformation roles are money shots with all the makeup and the actor pulling off the opposite sex or a different character like audiences generally would be more impressed seeing actors transform than somebody trans who’ve already made the look before and on screen. It’s more fun to see famous actor play trans too because they’ve been around in the cinematic world longer than trans plus the acting world is about doing their job so they throw them into all kinds of crazy challenging and different characters to show off their ability of how well they can do their job once they’ve studied the characters background, now if a trans done this the job will be too obvious for them to achieve because acting is about acting like something you are not like acting as somebody else that’s the whole point of acting and coz trans are already trans they don’t always see it as the job for them they wanna see real convincing acting you see. It’s not just like this with transgender but also with couples in real life like there’s couples in drama shows here in the U.K. and the couples star in the same ones together like in Emmerdale but the producers don’t put them together as a couple with the characters they play on screen like they are coupled up with other actors on it.

one thing to bear in mind with cis actors playing trans characters is that while it’s already hard enough to find trans actors, it can be very difficult to find trans actors who have not transitioned and are comfortable playing their assigned gender should the role require it. with the danish girl, lily spends most of the film pre transition, as is the case with several trans characters. if they were to cast a transwoman, they would need to cast an actor who had not undergone any procedures or started hormones. there’s no easy answer

I agree... there is definitely some social responsibility there. Actors are actors and their job is to bring characters-roles that are written in the script to life. People get a little obsessed with representation and tend to forget that. The logic LGBTQ characters must be only played by actual LGBTQ actors/actresses puts limits to the art of acting. The criterion of who is the best option for the role should be the acting skills, not the sexuality or gender label. Besides, the biggest the gap between the performer and the character is, the hardest the work and study becomes for them. It's a challenge for them and a chance to learn more, understand and talk about their experience, then share it with the people and that may be more effective than just please communities. If the portraying of the character is done properly, shouldn't we be happy? Isn't that what matters in the end? PS: Cate Blanchett and Lee Pace have been doing amazing job in similar gender-changing roles too.
@LacriMosa5 жыл бұрын

@@LacriMosa And I was hopping I won't be eaten alive for my comment. ^-^" Thank you. Unfortunately, the more the people get the more greedy and demanding they become... And I may be a lesbian myself but I never allowed that fact to cloud my judgement on which is capable to play a role.
@LacriMosa5 жыл бұрын
@@CineShinya No problem, I mean you make a lot of sense and should not be attacked for having a different opinion. Yeah, I feel like a lot of good movies are actually ruined by forced representation. I mean, when I watch a movie I watch it because of the movie and not to judge if there is enough representation in it. Acting is acting and I feel like instead of being put down by the community, these actors deserve some credit for their take on these difficult roles and how they managed to bring them to life. I'm glad because it really shouldn't matter. If the actor is capable he's capable, regardless of their sexuality or gender etc. (;

Can someone please explain why playing the opposite gender is seen as more drastic than shaving your head? What?

Any actor should be allowed to play any role so long as they can play the role better than anyone else

I think all that "cisgender playing transgender" is bullshit. Some people just want to fight over stupid things. We all should be grateful transgender is portrayed by such talended artists. period.

Listen, I've been dreaming of being an actress but doing male roles, but it is impossible unless you get lucky (or unlucky, depending on what you want) and get one of these parts

Acting is a profession. In Sense8, Jamie Clayton did a fabulous job in her role. She was quite fascinating and I've seen her in other roles as well. But the question of whether or not transgender roles could be played better by transgender actors is only relative if the only essential acting element of the character is gender or gender identity. But when you start building a character around a theme and you include friends, family, co-workers, protagonists, antagonists and the REST of the content/context of acting, can the full list of transgender actors touch the superstars that played those roles with great box office results? Think of it another way. I'm a retired electrician. My father-in-law and I were a father-son operation. We specialized in home renovation electrical work. One day we started a job for a gay couple. I didn't think anything of it, until the next job, we did work for a lesbian couple. For six months all our jobs came from the LGBTQ community. Someone we worked for must have really appreciated our work ethic, fair pricing, etc or perhaps just our jovial sense of fun when we work and put us on some kind of "trusted services" list. Thank you by the way for that. So, asking the question of whether a transgender person could act out a role of a transgender character better than a cisgender person, isn't about gender, it is about acting. I do believe that transgender method actors of any talent would nail the transgender part of a transgender character, but there are many more elements to any role than the gender of the character. Does the lesbian couple only hire lesbian electricians? I wouldn't judge them if they did - we all have our comfort zones and beliefs and needs. I think at the end of the day most humans want the best service for their money, whether it is the installation of a ceiling fan in the bedroom or a box-office hit at the theater. My final thought is, we'll get there. I was a teen and young adult in the 80s. Gender Fluid and non-Binary sexual identity wasn't even a concept, let alone a cultural expression. As transgender actors become more well-known like Jaime Clayton, that should inspire all the other transgender actors to try that much harder to make it in showbiz, which is a hard world for any actor by all accounts. I think many transgender actors might have the potential to get more jobs than most cisgender actors if they were willing to play either gender. If that is somehow insulting, that was not my intent, but in Hollywood if you want to "arrive", then use all your gifts and talents to get there. I don't pretend to have all the answers, nor can I appreciate all the different types of unique identities that any human chooses, but what I do appreciate is that underneath all the labels and group identities there are just a sea of humans wanting, needing and working to create the life that is most valued by them. Perhaps someday we can all be whatever we are without all the drama and discord of differences and a desire to be unique.

The problem, in my opinion, is that trans people are so very rarely cast in anything. Yes -- performances like Eddie Redmayne's in The Danish Girl are stellar and I wouldn't change the actors. But I do think that there's a pattern of casting cis people for trans roles, a pattern that doesn't have to be there. It's like the Bechdel test: having two female characters interact and speak about something other than a man doesn't necessarily make the film good, but it does do something for better representation of women. The same could be said about trans roles and actors.
