Owning a cat is a big responsibility. Although every cat owner has good intentions for their cats, some mistakes made knowingly or unknowingly cause the lifespan of cats to be shortened.
1- Not Ensuring They Drink Enough Water
Many cats don't like water, so they don't drink enough. Therefore, they are more prone to developing health problems such as urine crystals and kidney problems. To avoid the complications of dehydration, it's important to provide them with constant access to water in ways they find appealing, such as water fountains, canned foods, and multiple water bowls.
2- Don't give them access to open windows
Every year, veterinarians and animal hospitals treat cats that fall from great heights, often from the windows of multi-storey buildings. If you live in an apartment or multi-storey building, do not leave any windows open. Your cats' natural instincts may kick in when they see a bird and they may leap out of an open window to chase their prey, leading to tragedy.
For this reason, you can put strong cat nets on the windows.
3- Stressing Your Cat
Too much stress not only harms humans, but also your best friends, felines. Research has shown that fear and anxiety can reduce your cat's lifespan by months. Stressors for cats can come in ways you wouldn't expect.
A sudden change in family or home, loud noises, a dirty litter box, inconsistent routines, lack of mental stimulation, and being punished or forced into a room are among the common causes of stress in cats.
Remember, having a good life and a strong emotional bond with their family helps cats live longer.
4- Not getting enough exercise
Cats need exercise just like humans and dogs.
Spend at least 20 minutes a day playing interactive games with your cat. Exercise provides mental stimulation and promotes good muscle and bone health. Although cats hunt in their normal lives, they remain more sedentary because they do not have to worry about bread and water at home, and if they do not exercise enough, they may suffer from obesity.
5- wash them
Cats are excellent at grooming themselves and rarely need to be bathed. If cats are bathed too frequently, they can lose the essential oils in their fur and this can even be a traumatic experience for them.
Do not bathe your cats unless absolutely necessary.
