Charlotte knew that they were never going to keep Kobe. I don't recall if he said he was only going to play for LA or if he simply refused to play for Charlotte. They thought that, by trading him, they could use him as a trade piece for something good. Divac averaged 16 and 10 two years before the trade and was coming off of an off year. He wasn't an All-Star at that point in his career, but he was a solid starting center. If Kobe said that he wouldn't have played for anyone but LA, Divac may have been the best deal they could get. Kobe's value would have cratered as an 18 year old who was demanding to play for one franchise.

Giving a player (Shai) who at 24 is already arguably better than Paul George ever was, as well as 6 draft picks, one of which became Jalen Williams who finished 2nd in rookie of the year voting, is insane. Clippers have to be up here.

Shai isn't even close to prime pg. Pg led the pacers to the conference finals and took Brons heatles to 7 games. Ended up top 3 in MVP and dpoy voting in 2019. Consistently led his teams to the playoffs. Took the clippers to their first western conference finals in franchise history with an undermanned squad without kawhi all the while Shai couldn't beat the timberwolves in a play-in game. Yes, Bill Russell is the greatest winner and 11 chips and all.. but both Macauley and Hagan end up winning the Chip with the Hawks too back in 58. Imagine Jokic, Jamaal Murray, Gobert and Mitchell on the same team, Nuggets would really make a contender perhaps to challenge the Warriors in the West at that time, although the question is, would Gobert get along with Jokic and Murray (as we knew he and Mitchell didn't get along with each other during their time at Utah resulting to Rudy being traded to the Wolves and Donovan to the Cavs) Also had Ray Allen and KG became teammates earlier in Minnesota, perhaps the Wolves have a deeper run since Garnett had a legitimate scorer alongside him in Allen especially in 2004 but another question is, will they still end up traded to Boston in 2007 or will Paul Pierce join them instead there? Also Indiana blew a chance to have a PG Kawhi duo in their team, something the Clippers have now (although they both suffering injuries recently)

No. The only reason they drafted Kobe was to get divac. They needed a center and didnt need a guard. Lakers (or Jerry west) wanted Kobe but didnt have a lottery pick. So they already had the deal before the draft if Kobe was available when it was Charlottes turn. And another reason lakers wanted to deal divac was because they wanted to sign Shaq in free agency but couldnt due to the salery cap. So they more or less got both Kobe and Shaq by trading Divac
