If you are going to use superglue for cuts then it should be medical grade superglue not toolbox grade. It can't be used on all types of cuts either. You are better carrying wound closure strips which weigh nothing at all. Great video though and will alter a few things in my pack. I didn't realise there was a potential problem with CO2 cartridges. I will take a pump in future as well.

@@robb.sutton very true, medical grade cyanoacrylate glues are identical to hardware store brands other than the fact that they go through a more rigorous testing schedule. Regular CA glues are very safe

No just use normal superglue. You don’t put the glue into the wound anyway. It’s designed to glue the skin together. I’m a doctor and yes we use it all of the time. I’m sure the medical glue we use is claimed to be some sort of sterile chemicals but it’s just an excuse to charge us a fortune.

In case you fall off a cliff and get swept out to sea... Edible candles, an extra spare innertube to use as a float, polarised swim goggles, Vaseline as lip salve (also essential as a plumbers grease when replacing valve core) , waterproof sunscreen, Tilleyhat sun hat w/ paracord and a couple of twenty pound notes tucked inside. Oiled Guernsey sweater for the inevitable wind & rain. Harpoon for self-defence and food replenishment, Wicker basket n handlebars can double as a lobster pot. Adjustable monkey wrench for breaking open lobster, self-defence, and smashing the padlock off the door of the abandoned lighthouse. Watrerproof matches and some marshmallows to cook on an open fire.

This is why I never ride my mountain bike near the sea, you have to bring so much gear! All I have to bring here in the upper midwest is a hot tent and flat packing wood stove (telescoping chimney goes in the frame bag) and my deer stand plus crossbow for replenishment. The flat pack steel woodstove panels can be assembled into a solid jump for cross unpassable waterways or gorges, you just have to use this one-time option wisely. I end up having to buy a new woodstove about every third time I ride.

I missed a bridge coming too fast around a turn, fell 7ft onto my shoulder. Phone GPS helped me find my way back to the main trail and to my car. The pain from the crash had me going into shock, having a GPS to follow was a real lifeline. Also used the phone to call a friend to recover my bike and take me to the hospital.

I would replace the super glue with steri-strips for wound care. Glue can be necrotic to tissue and can make it difficult to do an actual repair later on if need be.

Superglue was designed for wound care, steri strips are often used for larger cuts along side superglue. As an EMT it was always in my kit. (Emergency medical technician)

@@Molloy244 I’m an ACP (advanced care paramedic) who works in a trauma centre. I close wounds for a living. Wounds that are glued make it hard to assess for underlying damage, nerve/tendon injury. Harder to properly wash out so you avoid infection. Hard to do a proper closure once you take yourself to the hospital. Steri-strips are used on wounds of all sizes. It’s why they come in multiple widths and lengths. Wet gauze wrapped in cling over your wound is a much more hospital friend thing to do then gluing it.

Great list! I have two items I never go without riding in the hills of SoCal: a whistle and a small can of pepper spray. Although, I never crashed bad enough that I could not ride out, you can blow on a whistle longer than yelling to get someone's attention and the sound will go further. The pepper spray is for the possible mountain lion that roamed the CA hills. Ride or die!

I know this comment is late, but if by empty CO2 cartridge you meant empty from a manufacturing error, they can be weighed with a digital postage scale to ensure that they are filled. A full 16 gram weights 56.8 grams, and a full 20 gram weights 69.7 grams. I have never had one punctured by accident and to prevent that they can be taped around several times to help prevent accidental punture. Just thought I'd share just in case because in my own opinion carrying CO2 is so that you don't have to carry a pump at all. Great video thought and happy riding.

Recommendations from a few experienced riders I know: Duct tape covered thin credit card to use on a sidewall hole. Small bottle of sealant. Lighter. BandAids, Ace bandage and small Neosporin. A little duct tape on a small wood dowel. Trace Minerals Electrolyte Stamina Pills - (like to only have water in hydration bladder). Honorable mention: Toilet paper in a zip lock bag, compass, Tylenol, lens cloth. Great video thanks.

Great video. Spare derailleur hanger has saved me before too. Small cheap insurance. I also use the small mini-altoids tin (oval shaped) to hold my spare hanger along with the 'scabs' patches I keep as well as a spare 'missing link'. Small thumb size of sandpaper is good too to rough up the tube for a patch. Also if you carry a spare tube for long periods of time (I use a saddle bag), wrap it in an old sock...over time the inner tube will rub against the nylon and wear a small hole in it.

All excellent tips, however I will offer a counterpoint on the super glue. I don’t necessarily agree with other commenters about the toxicity of super glue; the minimal amount used will not adversely affect the body. However the issue I have with super glue is sealing up the wound. It is extremely difficult to properly irrigate a laceration trail side. Permanently sealing up a wound with super glue (or sutures) in the field locks in any possible infection. It is far better to allow the wound to clot and/or stop bleeding on its own (your body will eventually minimize blood flow to the area and thus stop bleeding on its own for all but very serious wounds). If necessary some duct tape and a little bit of tincture of benzoine (aids in adhesion) will temporarily seal the wound up while still allowing your body to push any infectious substances out. A little duct tape (I prefer gorilla tape) wrapped around an old key card is also light weight and serves tons of purposes.

I carry a Tubolito Tube instead of a cheap and heavy regular tube. Tubolito tubes are about 1/4 the weight of a regular tube and 2X stronger. They also come in an orange color, which is rad! I agree with your setup but sometimes its fun to go packless. I have a Race Face velcro strap with pockets in it that houses my Co2 cartridge, a Wolftooth pack & pliers (which has my spare masterlinks), 1 tire lever (the wolftooth pliers count as the other one) and a Dynaplug patch kit. I have a Topeak multitool mounted separately under my top tube.

First aid kit definitely Para cord 12ft+ u can be towed with it ,I have a quick chain link/ tire removal tool, extra 9,10,11 speed quick links for the riders that never have one with broken chains. 😆 a few extra pounds doesn't mean much anymore.

4-16oz Co2 cannisters and inflator ( Hurray for Trek carbon bike frame storage ) ! A spare master link and presta core tool with 6 cores . a topeak pressure gauge , tubeless plug kit and slime patches in a seat bag . In a hip pouch , a pepper spray can and a compact 9mm ( crazy world We live in ) . a micro flashlight with spare batteries . A 6k power bank and cable to charge a cell phone . A pair of bontrager ion flare 200 lights with a flare 200 tail light too , as their very small . On the frame in a large cage rests a 18 ozHydra flask thermo vacuum bottle ( stays cold !!!! with powerade /Gatorade . If i am on a long ride I carry a backpack with a platypus 1 gallon bladder , some trail food , tool kit another flashlight , compact emergency flares and whistle , ultralite rain gear .even a collapsable snake hook and I have kindly removed several poisionous snakes from bike / hiking paths .

my main one i carry always. foldable water bottle (think plastic sandwhich bag with a sports top) and some water purification tablets. If im on a ride and touch wood my bottle falls out its carrier without my knoweledge, or my hydration pack springs a leak. Its small and light enough to not be a problem. and if i need it i can fill it up from a stream and chuck a purification tab in. or find somewhere to fill it up. I even keep some duct tape on the tablet bottle. so if my pack does spring a leak i can patch it up to either carry more water or retain as much as left over. Fortunatly never had to do this but the peace of mind its there if i need it is worth the tiny amount of space it takes up

A derailleur hanger is always a good one since if you bend or snap yours...it can get very tricky to ride back chainless or in a singlespeed setup... I don´t ride tubeless so I always carry park tool GP-2 patches, they work great. Also consider the TB2 for fixing a big cut in a tire. Love the evoc waist pack. Zip ties are a must. Some people carry ducktape/electrical tape wrapped around frame, bottle or similar. Great video :)

I like your video and there are several ideas I will copy. Thank you for that! What I carry with me on MTB and road bike tours are (1) disposable gloves: no weight or space and your hands will stay clean if you need to fix the chain. (2) And for ‚emergency nutrition‘ I have Salty sticks or Pattassium/Magnesium sticks with me: again: hardly any weight or space, and it gives you or fellow riders the quick kick of energy, when desperatly needed.

I'd also bring a headlamp or a small flashlight and some Paracord that you could tie to your bike frame if it gets too dark to see. I got kinda lost and it got dark but had a keychain flashlight on my keys that I held in my mouth while riding that saved me in a pinch! Now I carry a bigger light and a way to mount it.

If you’re truly concerned about weight/size, I recommend looking into the OneUp pump and EDC kit. The pump is light and can store a very high quality and fully-functional OneUp toolkit, plus a “stash” area in the pump that can be used to store small knickknacks like valve cores, zip ties, etc, or can be used to carry a CO2. Also Tubolito tubes are nice if you’re similarly worried about size/weight and are willing to pay the bucks.

The zip ties have saved me on more than one occasion. One time my Buddy’s shifter cable broke… and we were on a long climb. Was able to use the zip tie to keep the derailleur in a pedalable gear. Phone is a must - there was a hiker last year who unfortunately died from heat exhaustion. He wandered off into some trees for shade, he left his phone in the car, and no one could find him for days, and when he was eventually found it was sadly too late. And this was at a very popular hiking/biking area that he knew well. But it doesn’t take much for things to go south. I overheated on that same trail as well when biking once - the California mid day heat can really catch you off guard. So I would also add run something like Life360 so that friends/family can find you if you lose consciousness.

U-shaped strong wire tot keep your chain together when you need to replace a broken part of the chain. Spare cables for breaks and gearshifters. New glue for fixing a puncture. Using komoot on your phone can help others to locate you when in distress. Good video!

I use a length of electrical tape to hold the zip ties together. Keeps them neat and means you have some strong tape if you need it. The tube I carry on the bike with a strap and the chain link I tape into the recess on the back of my brake lever. I never though about the glue or wet wipes though. They're getting added.

A real good video, I think your loadout is good to go if you're out for a short ride. On the other hand I was working as a cyclist messenger in my hometown, so I'm used to carry a huge bagpack filled up with like 50 pounds of mail and other stuff. Same way I take the extra weight to have extra clothing, a first aid kit, tools and extra food and water, because in my opinion it's better to go prepared on every ride.

Had a buddy who was riding in the remote parts of the upper Sierras. Literally bought a specialized Angi module the same morning he had gone out for a ride, and 5 hours later it would save his life. Had to get airlifted off the side of a 9,000ft peak after he went OTB. Immediately bought one for me, my wife, and my kid. Will forever be a necessity. Can’t imagine having lost him.

what i did is since i ordered from diamondback anyways, i went ahead and ordered their ready to ride kit, except they were out on their site. i ordered through amazon and the company sent out a second multi tool of their own lol, yay free multitool. but anyways, it included a multi tool, floor pump, hand pump, patch kit, multi tool, and a saddle bag. the hand pump you can attach to the handlebars, which is nice.

Great video. Maybe look into the R.A.T. tourniquet. They obviously help if you have a bad compound fracture etc but also they can be used to lash something down, splinting, and other uses. They are small and light, I'll bet you'll figure out a bunch of other uses too.

Depends where and what you ride.. I ride bike park gnarly. OneUp edc in stem - tools levers links tyre repairs In my hip pack - Inreach, tube, co2, pump, no ties never ever had a need, slow energy release bar, cliff bar, basic first aid. Optional.. phone for navigation (trailforks), Cold weather clothing.. That’s it, and I’m that guy who’s got it to help on the trail.

as i do many sports all year long, i do always carry small "first aid kit" with me as an the most important essential. almost always i carry few more things - head lamp and lights, spare thermo tshirt (as i live in a mountains), lighter, mini lip balm and buff (or two). This list almost 1:1 mirrors my backpack, but 1 warning over superglue : Super Glue is a cyanoacrylate adhesive, and it contains toxins that can be harmful to tissue. So, keep it in your toolbox. For the medicine kit, however, the FDA has approved a less toxic, more flexible formulation (2-octyl cyanoacrylate) called Dermabond. It dries fast, stops the bleeding, keeps out dirt and air, and typically stays in place until the cut is healed. It is not, however, recommended for deep or jagged wounds, use on mobile areas such as joints, or contaminated wounds.

Yup, my father, truck driver, used ca glue in a pinch on the road to glue his teeth prosthetic. Had to be taken out to hospital due to very bad poisoning. So yeah definitely don't glue any mouth cuts or anywhere where blood absorption is increased.

Also adding a comb and tweezers for my Cactus lovers, lighter or matches, agree with the light as a precaution, but also something to power charge your phone, a compass on your bike, and recently decided to add a bungee cord in the event needing to pull another bike with biker off the trail and repair efforts failed. Way too hot to wait for rescue.

I hate wearing anything on my back, especially now in summer... I don't even wear the padded shorts... It's a bit less comfortable, but the balls are thankful in the hot weather lol So I have two bottle cages on the bike with 1L bottle each, small pump mounted there as well... And I have a small bag that mounts under my seat that has the inner tube, multitool, tyre patches and tyre levers and spare quick link... And I wear a small fanny pack for phone, cash, ID and food. I usually ride around 20-40 km and I know the area pretty well. So if I go for a longer ride, I just plan a stop somewhere where I can get more water. I have a Camelback that I take when it's not too hot/for longer rides but try to avoid it.

I carry some if the stuff you talked about. The MyId thing it is a great idea. I will like to add a whistle, this is just in case you forgot your phone (which it rarely happens) and you are not badly injured, are alone on the trail but would need some help, someone might at a distance close enough to hear you blow that whistle.

I use a Dakine 5L Hip Pack and always carry… Pocket First Aid Kit, Mylar Blanket, along with the items mentioned in this video. Not an awful idea to have a Mylar Blanket on you for warmth and (God forbid) shelter.
