Hi, this is ShadowsSun, creator of the mod! A couple of things to note: Mission 1: There *is* a change or two, but I agree that it's not exciting enough to show on camera. Go play for yourself if you're interested! Mission 2: Grant's right, this really is a level designed to show off the HERC as a frontline unit. A couple of people have noticed that one of the buildings got rescued in the bottom right: this is an armory, which I gave the player so theor mines would stay hidden while burrowed. Real hack stuff! Mission 3: The enemy will start hitting you with waves of mutas and even the occasional guardian, but obviously not soon enough to hit Grant! For the second part, the detection range markers: this is something of a perrenial problem, and one I thought I'd fixed. It seems to be something to do with the mess that is Operative upgrades that messes with the way the game auto-shows detection of you have stealthed units in your selection. I will get to the bottom of it soon hopefully. Or just paint the radiuses on the room floor! As for why they're missile turrets and not the usual ghosts, I was having trouble getting the stealth AI to work properly with multiple units. Shoutout to Synergy for showing me how to do it for the later missions!

The protoss version of the last stealth mission (beneath the enemies shadow or something) is actually the best stealth gameplay ive ever played in any game, but bc its buried in a mod for a campaign nobody played i never get to tell anyone about it You dont get to really experience it cuz nova's sniper rifle or mobility trivializes the systems they added but dark templar with blink, a single target damage spell & a shield-restore spell against enemies who can emp his cloak off using abilities that work like MMO raid boss attacks is actually crazy fun. I want a whole game of it

Some RTS games used to have that feature. Earth 2140-60 games let you design units from researched components that had different costs. Then there was Impossible Creates. Where you gather creature DNA and can create your own hybrids from them. Swapping out individual limbs. Get an Archer Fish (which spits water) and give it wings and you've got a flying ranged unit, for example.

Company Of Heroes 2: Ardennes Assault did something similar where you could upgrade your company where you could upgrade your abilities but it would cost more to call in or just decrease the cost with another upgrade. This was done with a resource called requisition which is also the thing used to heal your company after fights so there is some decision involved as well

On the note of games that let you change unit costs, most of the Earth 21XX series of RTS games was built around that to an extent. 2150 always stressed me out with the campaign time limit, tho it was cool to see certain missions physically change depending on how long you dragged your feet; early game everything is frozen, then it goes to temperate with water now being an issue, then hellscape with lava as the planet literally burns.

The Operative Kit idea is actually similar to something I did some personal brainstorm-writing on(I have no coding/modding skills but I love coming up with ideas and fleshing them out as best I can) and applied to the Terran as a whole. ie you could kit out every single unit in the Terran roster and modify them between missions, including their weapon choices and special abilities. This could affect their costs and capabilities and specialties. I even started applying the LotV Protoss 3 units per unit 'type' choice as well. As one example, the Marauder, Firebat, and HERC were the three different suit types for your Heavy Infantry choice. Marauders could be equipped with Impact, Concussive, or Shredder weapon types. Impact removed all extra effects but made them a little bit cheaper, Concussive was, well, Concussive, and Shredder gave them anti-light AoE damage.

Same! There was actually a period of time where being able to design your units (which often included changing their costs as well) was seen as the new standard for RTSes. It still exists in some current games (e.g. Stellaris). I don't miss it much, it tended to allow crazy OP builds or completely trap builds and was lot of busywork, but maybe a little bit.

They probably don't start at 200 energy, though, so in those sustained assaults like that mission has, it is better to have the range, since they likely have normal energy regen rates.
@DamnDaimen
@DamnDaimen 3 ай бұрын
@@calebadam2576 Lets see, most units spawn in with 50 energy, and have .75 energy regen, giving it a charge every 32ish seconds. So unless its triggering on cooldown, the energy system is more widow mine shots if the long range widow mine has a normal cooldown, 29 seconds, apparantly. A good arguement is that it can shoot down detection, but the energy mine is WAY more damage.
@calebadam2576
@calebadam2576 3 ай бұрын
@DamnDaimen Huh, neat. So it is a tradeoff of being more a siege unit. I'd probably still take the range-- it seems like an overall more practical choice to me since they can hit hydras or tanks while being behind a defensive line, but good to know the energy mine has a potential benefit even without having a huge store of energy.

Not an RTS, but Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri had you design units. You'd pick chassis/armor/weapon/move/special mods and those would all affect the price (and thus build time, since that's how Civ works). There was also an increased prototype cost for the first unit of a new design (or maybe it was just first use of a new tech? First use on that type of unit? It's been like 25 years; I don't remember exactly...)

There are suprisingly a few RTS-es with custom units creation, at least from games I rember There is Warzone 2100 and it's (sort of) Spiritual sequels Earth 2150 and 2160. Pick chassis, fill in weapon slots +/- support systems. E2160 even allow to chose armour type, tho this game rock-paper-scissors balancing was more like boulder-bed sheet-chainsaw 😅. There is Impossible Creatures where you can mix-match parts from 2 diffrent animals ( from list of like 60-70 ?). Hundreds of options, only like 10 of them viable There is Refulx ( aka Robo Rumble ) from 1998. There is even a minigame where you can win discounts for buying new parts between missions (or pay extra if you lose :P ). Tho this is more of a puzzle game than RTS And there is Battle for Middle Earth 2, where you can build your own custom hero, tho only for skirmish and war of the ring mode, not campain. When to think about it, most game that tried this idea are either preety old or not exactly succesfull. I can see why it's not a popular idea - it's time consuming and probably impossible to balance well.

Definitely want to see more of this funny mod, even if it's just to see how buff the HERCs get by the end. I desperately want to see a gaggle of HERCs somehow take down the Xanthos.

The only similar memory I have of building your own unit was in Battle for Middle Earth 2, where you could create your own hero unit

Now I want to play HotS, with Kerrigan replaced by Nova (and Nova units too). Instead of new abilities you would unlock better gear and unit upgrades as the campaign goes on.

0:10 'We ballin' and jank strats are in the near future. 6:46 Baneling immunity and unlimited spider mines if you could rotate control groups properly, that's pretty broken ngl. 12:58 Widow mines, the one unit that almost made Grant ragequit. 20:24 Breathe, Grant! I know that upgrade is busted, but still, breathe! 23:13 "Can they take this down down without being contested? I think so actually," said Grant, seconds before an Overseer casually shmooves into view. But seriously, isn't NCO kinda has a mixed reception because while stealth is the main theme, literally everyone and their dog has detection up to their fucking armpits? 32:12 "Damn! Who did this?" Call me crazy, but I think the ones who are shooting at you might be the culprits.

the F2 shows 8 units at the start 31:28 , so maybe one of them was a placeholder for Nova? I only saw one unit added at the communication terminal objective.

Grant, I wondered if you noticed. During the computer cutscene in the 2nd mission, you got an extra Spectre and it was just chilling there the entire time. I was hoping you would somehow lose your last Spectre and then wonder why the mission wasn't ending, only to notice you had one last forgotten unit.

Wouldn't it be more fun to just pave the access routes in mission 2 with spider mines, using all that downtime in the beginning? Also, build psi disruptors on the cliffs, and perdition turrets to defend? See if anything comes anywhere near the entrance of the base

Wonder if there's like a shared wiki for sc2 modders. Most of these mods introduce a great feature or QoL change. If there is a place for these talented modder can share their processes then everyone benefits Like one from the CnC WoL mod that allows you to switch your research after your initial pick. Or that shared ability bar for missions with multiple heroes on Coop Tycus and is implemented done in real scale, or at least it was real scale Pretty sure there was another Nova mod, a redus or something where they were able to modify the Load out menu and added their own units and loads
I wish I could change THIS fast! 🤣
