Oh my god, this is especially horrifying when you know the big reveal SPOILERS SPOILER SPOILERS It implies that they don't die immediately when the simulation is shut down. They're left awake, trapped in their pods until they die due to the lack of life support. Screaming each other's names until the last of the oxygen runs out.
