I think people didn't like this movie because it broke the usual Disney mold a lot...which is good. Notice how when Milo and Kida meets, they don't flirt at all. They actually have a conversation on something more important. Romance only comes at the very end of the film. Also, the movie could very well pass as an adventure for older adults, minus the jokes here and there. It has also an anti-exploitation message as the leader of the search party for Atlantis is only interested in the great power of the Heart of Atlantis, which would kill it's thousand years-old citizens, as it was the only thing keeping them alive and slowing down their aging significantly. Also, one thing that stands out in this movie is the design of the characters and backgrounds. It has little roundness to it.

In the movie, the Heart of Atlantis is implied to be a sort of alien entity that developped an attachment and perhaps, even feelings, in its own way, for those people that became the Atlanteans. As such, it granted them extraordinary lifespans and protected them in times of need. Perhaps, it only picked royal members as a sign of alliance. Or perhaps, it needed to fuse with the atlantean leaders, who wants the best for their kingdom, using their emotions and life-force almost like a battery, but temporarily. Except if the energy needed is too huge to unfuse, like when Atlantis sank underwater. I love this idea explored in the movie.

No matter how bad the movie may or may not be, this scene alone is one of the most memorable pieces of cinema (animated or otherwise) in the past few decades. I still remember what how the trailers made me feel the first time I saw them back in 2000. That is how powerful this scene is.

Its so strange and beautiful, the emotion of the music keeps changing. From soft to strong, from mysterious to some somehow familiar. It feels like its the song of the whole world; Egyptian, greek, african, american. Its everything, and its different at the same time.

This would be such a perfect live action movie. It didn't do well because it came out the same time as Shrek. Which is unfortunate because it's so good.

My intro to this song and movie was on the Disney Dinosaur VHS, ironically another movie Howard scored, the music was very mystifying to young me and I begged my dad for us to see it in theaters. Such a great film. Apparently, it didn't do well because it didn't have a strong marketing campaign. It really was meant for an older audience. Ah well, my kids will hopefully enjoy it someday. lol

1:10 is just Magical. I get chills every time. This movie is really wacky. It doesn't completely add up, escpecialy this scene. No matter how many times I see it, I still don't quite understand, but this movie never fails to amaze and leave me breathless.

Seriously guys, this was my favorite movie in the whole world. I still remember when I got a Kida doll for christmas; it had a crystal included and Kida's crystal (doll) could shine and it was totally mind blowing for a 4-5 year old girl like me. I also enjoyed recreating this scene with the house illumination, lifting the crystal with my hands lol

I'm gonna say it - The Crystal was a god - a formless being of energy that transcended dimensional limits. That's why when Kida, when possessed, reassured Milo that everything will be okay - because she had already seen the future and knew the outcome.
