It's really weird to hear people saying "I didn't know Outlander was that popular". I've been a massive Outlander fan since 1992 when, as a bored 12 year old, I snuck the first book from my Mom's nightstand drawer one night. 🤭 Needless to say my Mom never did get the book back and I'm still in possession of her copy to this very day. lol Those of us who've been reading the series since that first book was published waited literally *decades* for a screen adaptation of the series. At first it was going to be a movie based off the first few books but that fell apart and we had to wait once more til 2014!! The tv show definitely opened up the series to a much larger, worldwide audience but trust me, it's been a *very* popular book series for almost 30 years now and has an *extremely* loyal fanbase.
@dandmpug3 жыл бұрын
LYacky1 - I can't say I've been a fan for as long as you have, but I'm sure you agree, it was worth the wait for the show! How lucky for us that they made it into a series, not a movie. My mom, who read the series from the beginning and has reread it now many times, tried for years to get me to read it, but for some crazy reason that I don't understand now, it just didn't sound that interesting to me. That all changed when I saw they were making a series. I watched the trailer out of curiosity and after one look at Sam as Jamie, I was immediately hooked and started voraciously reading the first book before the show began airing. I ended up reading the entire series in a few weeks and have now reread it 3 times! Hopefully, I'll convince my daughter to read the books soon, though thankfully, she's 20 - I can't quite imagine her reading it at 12! Love that you kept that first book all these years!
@bookworm5983 жыл бұрын
Wow thanks for sharing this! I only recently got into the books but I love that fans have been around that long. Out of curiosity, do the actors cast match how you originally pictured the characters? Unfortunately I saw clips of the show before reading the books so I have always pictured them looking like the actors
@SoulShines4Music3 жыл бұрын
@@bookworm598 - Yes and no. Also, with the exception of Jamie & Murtagh, when I'm reading the books I still see the characters in my head the same as I have for the last 29 years, with a few age tweaks as the characters grew older of course. 😉 That should kinda answer your question if the actors matched what I had envisioned in my imagination. lol In all honesty the vast majority of the casting has been way off for me but that doesn't mean I'm not happy with the job the actors are doing on the show. I understand that a tv show (or movie) and a book are two *completely* different mediums and I also recognize the fact that no actor is ever going to perfectly match the images our vivid imaginations concoct whenever we're reading a book. The two casting exceptions were Sam Heughan as Jamie Fraser and Duncan Lacroix as Murtagh Fitzgibbons. Both of these actors not only matched the Jamie & Murtagh I saw in my head but they far exceeded my expectations in every way possible. My biggest disappointment was actually Caitriona Balfe's casting as Claire Beauchamp Randall Fraser and I was far from the only longtime fan who was initially upset with her landing the role. No disrespect to Caitriona Balfe but she looks absolutely *nothing* like the Claire Fraser who is quite vividly described by Diana Gabaldon in her books. Caitriona Balfe was a runway model and is stunningly gorgeous and rail thin and that is soooo NOT our beloved Claire Fraser in the books. It's actually quite comical really just how insanely different the two women are from a physical standpoint. The hair is about the only thing from the books that's on point when it comes to Claire in the tv series and it's no secret that Caitriona wears wigs to achieve that similarity. It was really disappointing when the pilot first aired to see that the creative team had strayed so far from Diana's description of the character because although book Claire isn't fat or unattractive in the least, she definitely isn't a supermodel either. Far from it. It just would've been nice to see the creative team cast an actress who more closely resembled the character's original description as opposed to an actress who (through no fault of her own) conformes to Hollywood’s rigid beauty stereotypes. All that said I couldn't be more happy with Caitriona's overall dramatic performance. Cait's done a phenomenal job with our feisty heroine Claire Fraser and I wouldn't trade her for any other actress out there at this point. However the difference was so jarring at first that it did take me halfway through the first season for Cait to truly sell me on her performance and make me forget she looked absolutely nothing like book Claire. Specifically it was the wedding episode that sealed the deal for me. Cait's onscreen chemistry with Sam Heughan is lightning hot and that wedding episode was well worth the 22 year wait it took for me to see it play out onscreen. lol From that episode onwards I was completely sold on Cait's performance as Claire and Sam went from being a good looking guy to the sexiest man alive on this planet. lol The rest of the actor's don't really match their book counterparts either but the actors have all managed to sell me with their fantastic performances regardless. I initially thought Graham McTavish was way too old to play Dougal MacKenzie (and he is when compared to the book) but for the show I thought Graham was absolutely perfect. Same goes with Sophie Skelton as Brianna Randall MacKenzie. Once again Sophie looks nothing like how Brianna is described in the books (except for the red wig Sophie wears) but her looks do closely resemble Caitriona and Sam's which is I'm sure why she was cast in the role. Anyways I *love* the books, they've been a huge part of my life for so long and as such they'll always hold a special place in my heart, as will the character's I see in my head when I read the books. That said I'm also a massive fan of the show and I'm so happy we've been blessed with such a faithful and amazing screen adaptation of Diana's phenomenal books. I just *really* hope the show continues right to the end of Diana's series. 🤞 P.S. - Sorry for my epic long response. I could talk about Outlander til the cows come home. lol

I started reading it at the end of the 90s (some time before The Fiery Cross came out) and it wad very popular back then. There were internet forums dedicated to it and fan pages, things like that. But I also knew a lot of people in real life who were reading it or who had heard of it.
