I always knew Tom Petty wrote this, but for me it’s Maria’s song all the way. I saw Lone Justice at Madison Square Garden opening for U2, and then they were gone. Tragic.

That's because you're just too young to fully appreciate Tom.

One of the best and most under-played Petty-writren tunes.

Thank you I had no idea that Tom Petty wrote this. For me , Maria McKee's vocal is stronger, but Tom Petty is in his own lane as a rock star! There's also shades of The Boss in this record. Don't know if Petty was inspired at all by Springsteen. thanks for sharing this gem.

Maria McKee writes about this in her essay in "More Fun In the New World." She really didn't want to sing the line "You ain't afraid to stick it in," thinking it would be taken as a sexual connotation.

Honestly from the 1st time I heard it I heard it as a burnt lover seeing their love with someone else and making sure they see it.

Thanks for the background information! I was aware of Tom Petty's version from his box set, but I wasn't familiar with the version from Lone Justice. I have to say that in my opinion, Petty's version is much better, but I am also a huge fan of Petty to begin with.

Sorry I disagree that it was Lone Justice's only hit. Guess it depends on what is meant by "hit." Biggest, probably, but in college radio, they were well-loved.

You won't find a bigger Petty fan than me but Maria & Lone Justice own this banger! They were truly amazing in an LA period of such amazing bands and diversity! A great band gone way,WAY too soon.
