The craft with the disc and the yarn through the middle is a craft known as Kumihimo (Ku-mi-hi-mo), which a Japanese craft used to make bracelets and necklaces. It means "gathered threads" in Japanese

Less than 4 minutes in the video and I came here to say that too. I use Kumihimo to make cords for lanyards. It’s also used for friendship bracelets.

And to keep the threads from tangling they are wrapped on bobbins or shuttles. It's meant to be meditative, but I usually do kumihimo while watching a movie.

I think the 'hack' part is making your own loom by recycling cardboard - I got a couple of foam versions, one round and one square that makes strips. I find it boring too, but good for fidgeting in front of the tv.

I guess , since it's super simple, it would be good to make when you just need your hand busy on road trips and such, with scratchy synthetic yarn you wish to use up. Then you end up with something machine-washable that's a nice ornamental trim for your main crochet projects.

The painting with the yarn was very popular craft with my lower grade students. We used water colors or watered-down acrylics and the children really enjoyed doing it. We had some lovely art to hang inthe classroom.

I actually made some of the hats (from yarn craft 3) for my guinea pigs a few years ago as their little chrissie hats, but I did make them a little differently to in this video: I attached the yarn the same as the tutorial video, but then I flipped the strands through the centre of the loo roll ring and out the other side so it looks like the beanie rim has been folded up, idk it just looked a little neater. My piggies deserve the finest quality clothing! 😉

Some others have said that the 5 min craft video skipped a step or two, so maybe that's what you did? And also, guinea pigs in tiny yarn hats?!? Omg! I love it so, so much.

the cat hair yarn works 100% you just need to card the fur so all the fibers are facing the same direction, and you need to twist as you’re pulling
@MamamanaDoDo

So I’m a spinner. Cat fur is actually pretty grabby and it can be “spun” using your fingers if you twist and pull at the same time. To make it even stronger it could be plied. I’ve spun the undercoat of a dog, too.

I made those little beanie/hat things for Christmas ornaments. There's an added step to pull the yarn through the hoop after tying to hide the knots a little more, then make the "pompom". They're nice small crafts for say, a casual knitting circle exchange.

This. I wanted to comment the same both about the missed step and making those as holiday ornaments (I’m actually Jewish but I suppose they aren’t technically Christmas specific though what does a Jew do with an ornament lol) as a kid. They vaguely fit on Barbie doll heads if I recall correctly. 😂But I agree. They’re cute as a kid craft.

they also twisted the cat fur as they pulled it from the bundle, which _is_ essentially how you spin yarn, but you need much longer fibers than your cat had kdkdkd if she was a long-haired cat it _maybe_ could work from an experienced spinner but definitely not a novice and not with short hair kdjdkdkd

The yarn earrings went so well with your colorful look. If you are allergic to the metal piece...paint all the metal with clear nail polish. As long as there's no exposed metal to your skin. The alternatives that you gave if you made earrings would make an awesome future video idea. Definitely would love to see how a cute crotchet motif would look as an earring.

I'll have to credit you for unofficial hack number seven: adding clear nail polish to fake earrings 😂. I'm going to give that a go and if it works, you can bet I'll make a whole earring video. Cheers!
@panda-peanut
@panda-peanut Жыл бұрын
Just be careful wearing them for extended periods of time. The nail polish will wear off. And depending on how bad your allergy is, it may not work. Tried it on earrings and watch backs, worked for a few hours for me on the watch, and my earlobes started itching after only a few minutes. But I have severe metal allergies. Its different for everyone.

The French knitting is suitable for children, our grand children love fidgets. Presumably fidgets help with concentration and attention to task. I’d rather children did this craft than playing with some silly piece of plastic, the good thing about it is that eventually it will lead to crocheting or knitting. I love watching your channel, your content is truly amazing, I’m in awe of everything you make.

The reason spinning works with wool and the like is because there are actually barbs on the fibers which hook together, so when you stretch the roving out and twist it, it locks together and that is what makes the yarn stay yarn and not fall apart like what happened to you. I'm not an expert, but I don't think that dog or cat has that same barb texture to it. Thus, why those who mix in dog and cat very often blend in wool and other fibers that do lock. I am not certain as I have never worked with it myself, but I think rabbit might be the same as well, too slick to spin on its own.

The cardboard disc is definitely different that the cork craft you described as French knitting. I had a book as a kid that called it corking and came with two plastic "corks" in different sized. That weaves the yarn together in the same way as finger knitting (crochet chain stitch on your finger) and finger loops (stretchy fabric loops you twisted over your fingers to make a long strip). The disc is making more like a multi-stranded brain or twist.

Animal fibers are too short to spin by hand. They must be spun with a spinal or spinning wheel. This creates enough twist for the yarn to hold itself together. If you used plant fibers such as nettles or flax (linen) you could twist the fibers into cord or yarn with your hands. 😊

I completely agree! That's why on the very rare occasions when I do make pom poms, I just use my scrap stuff. Thankfully, the paint came out easily. Thank goodness for water based paint and stain remover lol. A few people have mentioned they use them for Christmas decorations! Not something I would have thought of but that's one of the things that makes having a little community so nice, you see many different ideas and perspectives.
