I think that the only Mowgui that is BORN evil is Stripe. Stripe could be the demon that the species is named for & he is reborn after he dies (making Mohawk a reincarnation in the sequel). And its his influence that causes the other Mowgui to act bad. Which is why Earl was playful until he got hurt. Also, I don't think metamorphosing into a Gremlin actually turns them evil either. I think their destructiveness is amped up, from the Gremlins POV, they were defending themselves. Earl was getting payback for the needle, and Billy's mom wasn't attacked until she mutilated one of them in a blender for eating her cookies. Now Gremlins that spawn from another Gremlin I think may be born evil due to their parent.

Based on Gizmo’s assumed immortality, I postulate that the reason he’s so well-mannered and friendly while the other Mogwai are little shits is because he’s actually very old and wise, while the others are newborns. It’s possible that Gizmo, although not evil, was mischievous as an infant, and that Stripe and the others, had they not turned to Gremlins, would have become more affable with a few hundred more years of life experiences.

I have also thought of some of these questions myself. I always thought of them as magical creatures and because they are magical creatures. That their origin are like a grim fairy tale. Creatures who live in remote forests or islands who have thick lush trees. That these trees have thick covering as to keep the mogui dry when it rains, who drink some liquid that is not water and are always nice innocent creatures of the forest, that they might spawn from the forest naturally and innocent. Now we come to the gremlins. Just like grim fairy tales gremlins are the dark thing that happens when nature becomes becomes corrupted. That Mogui in their natural untouched habitat know either by instinct or knowledge the “rules”. That bright light hurts, that water makes them multiply “corrupted” spawn, and that because of some wacky fairy tale logic will turn to monsters if they eat after midnight. The issue and the moral message is that left untouched there is the natural balance, hence no issue but when you inject mortals and the modern world into that of the magical it is gonna cause things to become unbalanced because humanity has a destructive and corruptive impact on the natural/magical. So we get to the history. I figured that the Chinese have this magical forest and perhaps had small encounters with the mogui and perhaps after small incidents of someone futzing with one and dying because of it they had a reverent and cautious respect for them. They become part of the lore and that’s the status quo for thousands of years. Now Futterman’s WWII story, either that is drunken rambling or fact. If fact then perhaps during the many many wars/conflicts between China and Japan the Japanese found the forest and took some of the mogui to Japan. They through being around them learn what they can become and during WWII they become desperate and use gremlins against the US forces. It just feels the whole “humanity perverts the magical” theme works for this movie. It even works with Kate’s story. Her father tried to pretend he was Santa (a magical being with magical powers) but because her father is mortal and has no magic he can not fit down the narrow chimney and thus gets stuck. That also is implied with the ending and the pelzer family being chastised for being irresponsible and their irresponsibility caused all this chaos and destruction.

As I mentioned the Christmas Dead Last while I like the first Gremlins a fair bit I absolutely love Gremlins 2. As a kid, I just took for granted that it was the better film only to grow up and realize everyone else thought it was one of the worst sequels ever. Ah well. Much like with Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 I will stand vigilant with my love for the weird sequels to popular films.

I got an answer for the "eating after midnight" business: it depends on the Earth's position to the Sun and Moon!!! It's like high-tide, or a full moon to werewolves. It's a balance of lunar and solar energy, similar to some photosynthesis sh*t. It's where their negative energies go, and that's why their offspring are always bad. That's why Giz is like, "uh-oh" when they come around, because he knows that his little cuteness is balanced out by the negative energy being "excreted" out that way.

On question 7 - In my mind when I watch the movie, I always thought that the reason the mogwai that are created in Billy's room are bad is because the water was dirty, as Billy is keeping used watercolor paintbrushes in it. Especially as a child watching Gremlins, I always thought that the water being dirty is what made them have their unsavory personalities.

There was a Starlog Magazine (!) article that analyzed the Gremlins movie and mythos, and attempted to explain how the rules worked...It was great! I can't remember many of the specifics, but I seem to recall that the food after midnight rule was more about rationing calories to help prevent the mogwai (sp) from going through a natural step in their lifecycle if they ate too much too fast. I can't remember how the author must have hand-waved away the question, "But the rule is about time, not amount!" At any rate, fun video with some good analysis and historical research! I agree that the Mowgui are a mystical species with a supernatural origin, the rules also having a supernatural basis. Ancient Mowgui may have reproduced in the rain & could have been a pleasant experience. But modern day water isn't 100% pure due to chemicals & pollutants, and thats why it's painful & causes the personality change in new Mowgui. The water in the sequel was probably especially polluted resulting in the mutant Mowgui. The Midnight rule could be based on Midnight being the witching hour, so sunrise could be the safe time to eat again. Also, I think Midnight is determined by an internal clock, not necessarily the clock on the wall. Therefore crossing timezones wouldn't result in it instantly being midnight for them personally.

Just a note about the scientific veracity of the water rule. The video presents the argument that because we see gremlins in snow, and drinking alcohol, that it's illogical for contact with water to affect them differently. There are real world cases of humans severely allergic to water. Skin contact causes serious, debilitating rashes. They still need to drink water, and they do, with no negative impact. This example demonstrates that the science presented in the movie regarding water is fully plausible.

Wings grandson fell into a life of crime and was running with the Triads. During the second movie he was serving a 10 year stint in Rikers. Wing himself was a super natural being who was "gifted" responsibility of taking care of the Mogwai. Hundreds of years ago he was caught stealing a dragons egg. The dragon removed an eye and let him live until he found a new care taker for Mogwai. Billy and Kate have good hearts and when they moved to NYC, his life force left him. Gizmo is now a Peltzer.

What if the midnight rule isn't based on how we measure time but rather refers to the middle of the night? We know they're adverse to light so it'd stand to reason they're nocturnal. With that in mind they'd most logically be active between sunset and sunrise. And if night lasts 10-12 hours, then the median point or mid-night would be 5-6 hours after sunset.

(Old answers) The spawned Mogwai are evil because maybe the water in first movie was hot or dirty making the Mogwai bad. In Gremlins 2 the Mogwai aren’t that bad except for George and Mohawk but since Mohawk is the reincarnation of Stripe. George picks on Lenny and even forces him into things. Daffy and Lenny are more playful gremlins like how Lenny gets on George and Daffy basically plays around stuff in Billy’s office. However let’s look at them when their gremlins. Mohawk torture Gizmo, George isn’t that worse but is still that bad, Daffy is really evil and crazy, however Lenny does the least amount of bad I’m mean the only thing he did that bad was throw the Kitchen supplies into the microwave but everything less isn’t that bad. This video definitely needs an update.

With how getting gizmo wet is magic and as such water is essentially a spell being cast then who cast said spell mattered. In essence gizmos descendants take on characteristics of the person who spilled the water.

The water answer is not plain and simple and here is why is there outside in the snow and they come inside like the bar for instance or like when Strife ran across the street to the candy store once he got inside and the no that was on his feet or in his hair or on his skin thawed and got at least two slightly below room temperature or to room temperature before it evaporated wouldn't that make and multiply? Because frozen water like ice and snow does not remain Frozen most times when it comes into contact with skin it melts and the temperature goes up. And the same Theory with Steam once steam accumulates on surfaces like skin it becomes water

27:53 Proof once again that content creators NEVER do proper research. Daniel Clamp is based off of Ted Turner, media mogul who created TBS, TNT, CNN, Cartoon Network and TCM. He's also was a majority stock holder for Time/Warner. This comparison is eluded to several times in the second movie: -Grandpa Fred's quip about Clamp only liking films in color. This coming a few years after Turner decided to colorize several Warner Bros. classics, which everyone hated. -The (faulty) state-of-the-art building equipment, most likely a reference to the fact that the CNN Center had the worlds largest escalator. -Clamp's "end of the world" video was a jab at the then unseen "Turner Doomsday Video".

I have always thought gizmo had a curse on him. Why would evil Mogwai spawn from him but never nice ones? Was he evil once and learned to meditate thanks to the old man? And if it were a curse I would very much like to see a future film where he is freed of this curse culminating with him seen at the end having a nice warm bath after midnight while snacking on some food.
