You should tell your daughter that, that was made for a movie by the same name. And I heard that they tried to coregraph that routine with Elvis dancing but he couldn't do it, so they just let him dance and move like he always does when he's singing.

Ha, she's fun. ❤ Glad you guys were able to take it in together. You should definitely show her Elvis doing hound dog early on on preferably the Milton Berle show but if not later that year on The Ed Sullivan show, huge deal. And I think he was only about 20 years old at the time. And of course there's all those incredible live concert performances from later in his life after he got out of the movie contract, like 1970 Live in Vegas, a whole bunch of them, but Suspicious Minds is pretty fantastic entertainment, and it was a massive hit for him at the time. Lieber and Stoller were a premiere songwriting team back then, and they wrote many songs just for Elvis.

Have your daughter check out Elvis in the 68 Comeback Special for TV. He wanted to start doing concerts after doing movies for about 7 - 8 yrs. By this time he was in his 30's wearing black leather and in his prime. In color and looking mighty good.
@pat1cust22 ай бұрын
I'm 68. In my mid-teens in the mid-1970s I became a fan of 1950s rock and roll including Elvis (who, sadly, happened to die on my 21st birthday, Aug. 16, 1977. He had not taken good care of his health, to say the least.) Jailhouse Rock is the theme song from a movie, of the same name, starring Elvis. This footage is from that movie (before the 1970s, there were no music videos as we now know them. All film clips accompanying songs were from movies.) It's great to see reactions of people from younger generations. I feel really old (because I am!) when reflecting that I turned 13 in 1969, the year after Elvis made his "Comeback Special" in a concert shown on national TV. Leiber and Stoller wrote a lot of Elvis's songs. This one came out when I was 1 year old! I am a mid-generation Boomer but a longtime fan of the original rock and roll from my parents' generation. My wife, 8 years younger than I am, just made it into the Boomer category. Thanks for these reaction videos. Inspiring to see you and your daughter reacting to this (for me, nostalgic) stuff

Shawn, is so cool your 13 yr old is willing to listen to Elvis, she was boppin' to it. Hope you show more from the era. ( she is very pretty) " It's now or never" is a song by him she may like( a shuffle dance version has a catchy beat)

Really enjoyed this reaction, I’ve subscribed hoping to follow your daughter’s Elvis journey. Here are a few things she might find interesting. Elvis did not write any of his songs, and back then there were no music videos, that only became a thing with MTV in the 80s. His voice was pure talent, no auto tune or pitch correction. Apart from his movie clips, studio records, all of his performances were real live singing. When he first started, his dancing was sort of scandalous, singers did not dance or more the way he did and after a few Tv appearances he was censored from the waist down. He was the first mega start in history. He had three or four phases, the classic rock and roll (1954-1960), Hollywood era (1960-1969), early Vegas period ( (1969-1972) and later years (1973-1977), most people merge these last two into one, the Vegas years. When his movie contract finished he returned to singing with the 1968 comeback Special. Luckily there great Elvis performances out there. Let us know if you would like some suggestions. Looking forward to the next one. TCB⚡️

Great reaction! I think it's worth pointing out that Elvis was the biggest recording star ever, up until the Beatles arrived in 64. He was still a worldwide megastar for decades after. I always thought that one line in particular was pretty radical for it's time. "Number 47 said to number 3, you're the cutest jailbird I ever did see."

For more Elvis give her the '68 Special. Elvis was in prime voice and charismatic all over. Have her listen to more '50s music especially the original Rock and Roll and Doo Wop. Two of the best voices for her are Tom Jones and Linda Ronstadt. They are outstanding and you can get videos of live performances. That version of the song came from a movie. I think it was Elvis' 2nd movie. So, the dance number was made for the movie. I still think it was kind of "goofy." The song was written by Leiber and Stoler (sp.) who wrote a lot of Elvis' music --- as well as many other singers and performers of the time. Elvis never wrote music but did write the words to "Love Me Tender" (when I sang this in music class I got known as the "Elvis of the Freshman Class"). Two of the most popular performers from the 50s/60s who wrote and performed their own music were Neil Sadaka and Paul Anka. You may also consider showing the times Elvis did performances on Ed Sullivan's show --- especially the one where Ed Sullivan compliments Elvis which got a lot of criticism off and more acceptance by adults of Elvis.

When I was a little younger than your daughter, I asked my father if I could go to a movie by myself. Alone for the first time in a theater, I watched Elvis in "Meet Me at the Fair." It was 1962 and the "fair" was the Century 21 (Seattle, my home town) World's Fair. My best friend for live, had an uncle working security for the film shoot, and my friend got to watch the filming. Lots of Elvis movies, always about a young guy that was mistreated or misunderstood. Through good looks, simple Southern charm, and singing, he always won the heart of the best looking gal in town (usually a relative of the guy causing the most disrespect for Elvis). None were ever Oscar worthy, but still fun and a fancy way for Elvis to promote his latest songs. Pretty wholesome, so you and your daughter might enjoy watching one (even doing a movie review).

In 1977 the year Elvis died, he was the top selling concert artist in the U.S.and he only lived until August, 1977 meaning, every other artist in the U.S. in 1977 were not able to catch up to his ticket sales for the entire year. Elvis performed more than 1100 concerts, starred in 31 movies & recorded more than 700 songs. He is still the artist with the most gold & platinum records in the U.S. To say that Elvis was popular throughout his career is a big understatement. A bit of a misnomer, Elvis didn't 'cover' songs that were originally written for him; that is not what the definition of a 'cover' was during his lifetime - they were considered original songs irrespective of who the song writer was if the singer was the first person to record them. Under that definition, Elvis recorded more original songs than covers. Most big time artists 'back in the day' didn't write their own music; and, a lot of artists today who do write their own music...well, let's just say that they're writings are less than impressive. Irrespective, Elvis Presley was and remains the biggest all-around entertainer of all times.

elvis wasn't known for his dancing. he was known for "swiveling his hips" though. there was period when networks refused to broadcast him from the waist down because they thought it was "lewd." but this video was from a movie "Jailhouse Rock' (1957). just the year before this, 1956, elvis burst onto the music scene with a surprise hit "heartbreak hotel." a FANTASTIC song. by the end of the year he had 2 additional number ones and 17 songs in the top 100. in 1958 elvis was drafted and when he got out (1960) he shifted his attention to making silly, formula, "elvis" films. but some of them weren't too bad. the 50s were a crazy, exciting time. full of innovation and change. and elvis and r&r helped make it so. thanks for the video smiley and mr. smiley.

What a treat to see you with your charming daughter, Shawn! You can see both you and Shanna in her. She's a beauty, with lots of personality, and the warmth between you two is so obvious. (I'm getting a little choked up, lol!) Regarding the song, it's considered by many sources to be the first music video ever, so I guess we need to forgive the clunky '50's style choreography. Despite that, we still get to witness some of that early Elvis charisma.

Elvis did LOTS of songs that wasent cover songs, but songs written FOR him with him in mind, so he was the first to sing it. Yes he also did lots of cover songs (which in 80% of cases became the most famous versions, because he did it so good). Also Elvis often changed the song so much that it was almost a different song (music, Rythm, production) that like Marcus Greil writer from Rolling stone magazine said " could it i self be considered a form of song writing" . Try listening to the original of "long black limousine" and then Elvis' version to see what he meant .
