Why on earth do people go to for profit schools when their local community college is less expensive?

Because people get misinformed. The general assumption is that community college is for dummies and no one ever leaves community college. Little do they know that the general ed classes from a CC are equivalent to those at a 4 year- only cheaper. For profit schools also promise “faster” completion time, and job security. You don’t have to worry about what class to take; they do it all for you. In community college, you go to a counselor and they tell you what classes you need and you get to figure everything else out.

At networking you don’t need a degree to make a decent income since almost nowhere is taught as a career, I’m currently a software engineering student at a not so great, but decent college(running for valedictorian still), during my degree I realized my program programming wise is mediocre at best but they the school is extremely good at networking and quality assessment of software, databases and web dev. It might not be a good school regarding CS , but still will lead me to a job. Ps. I am a sophomore who has failed interviews from big name companies, I still have to study hard, and might not be able to pursue career pathways like AI but I know I have a future there. I’m still constantly told by teachers and administrators to look for internships and self study in whatever I want to specialize while there I’m getting a technical degree on steroids.

I'm saying this as a public school teacher... Not everyone should or needs to go to college. It is that simple. High school students should do research into fields they're interested in first to see what kind of higher ed is actually required and then plan accordingly. That being said, I cringed hard when she said she got a degree from a for-profit college. When college is necessary, I'm very much an advocate for accredited state schools with history and tradition. Two things were HUGE red flags to me. 1) Their credits were not transferable to other schools. 2) I checked into them multiple times over the period of about 4 years. The counselor I would speak to one year was ALWAYS gone the next year. One lady told me she had been there many years. I called back next year, asked for her, nope, she was gone too. I've worked with a few ITT grads many years ago when I did entry level jobs. All of them said it was the biggest mistake they ever made. Good riddance.

I'll grant u, biology is complicated. But Gender is not the enigma u think it is. Ur either boy or girl. Rare circumstances such as u have a disorder of the reproductive organs of some kind which is called intersex, but still doesnt make the gender arbitrarily chosen bc doctors can still run tests and find out other indicators of what the gender should be. What kills me inside about this is the fact that people might get the impression college is bad, but that is not the case at all. What is bad is NOT knowing why you are going to college, spending extra for things unrelated to education (Out of State, On Campus Housing, etc) Outside of a select few professions like Doctors and Lawyers you can get a good education at a community college. Why should you pay for a beautiful campus with all these bells and whistles that are not related to actual learning?! I tell anyone who will listen BEFORE you even consider college think about what type of careers interest you then go to a major job search site like Monster, Indeed, Careerbuilder, etc and see what is ACTUALLY in demand and WHAT are the requirements. You will see that many will say Bachelors + 3 years or GED plus 5 years experience. Even if they require a degree they DO NOT CARE where you got your degree as long as it is at least in a relevant field. Parents need to step up and talk to their kids.

I remember when I was suckered into going to a nationally accredited private school. The price tag was $90,000+ (and this is before interest kicks in). The good news: I left after less than a month. The “bad” news, I had to wait an extra year to get into another school. This new regionally accredited school was paid for by grants. If someone you care about is in college, please intervene if said person is taking on an unreasonable amount of student loan debt. 18 year old children don’t know what they’re signing up for, and are easy prey for for-profit schools.

I don't understand why someone would attend a for-profit college. Is it the easy admittance? Easier classes? Surely they can get the same education at a community college or at least the local library.

Mostly advertising and the ever perpetuated myth that "you must have a degree." The education at a for-profit can be just as good as any other school and often more streamlined and convenient. The biggest difference between a for-profit school and a non-profit school is one is upfront about milking you. You don't even need to attend a community school to get milked by them.

The problem is the library or internet don't give you that special piece of paper called a diploma which most HR departments absolutely need to see or your knowledge is not even considered with them. We need to stop associating a degree as a requirement for the vast majority of jobs. Unless you're a doctor, lawyer or engineer, no job should require a degree.

OK, hot tip from a guy who worked in computers: the degree you want is called "Computer Science". None of those "computer info business systems" or whatever the heck these majors are called. Study Computer Science. Also, I would bet my life that there is probably the most free CS educational content on the web compared to any major. Yes, I know a piece of paper from a college is good and you should get it. But my point is that if you go to a school that sucks, you should easily be able to supplement it with free resources online. I mean, MIT has tons of CS courses for FREE on youtube, for chrissakes. This won't be reflected on the piece of paper that is your degree. But it will be reflected in your conversations, interviews, and work you do with real engineers.

If you're not studying for a degree that will quickly and easily land you a high paying job (do your research as to what is required), there is zero point in being $130k in debt. Buyer beware. College degrees are useless commodities unless you are pampered rich OR you study toward a high paying job. Some women even go to college to meet a husband, which isn't a bad idea either (for the women).

College Administrators need to answer why they charge so much for degrees, especially public universities that are taxpayer supported. Colleges are largely responsible for these debts. Taxpayers should not be required to pay for student loan debt. (Note that we already pay for universities, and this is not for debt)>

If her Income Base went from $85 to $321 then she didn't renew her plan. The Income Driven Repayment plan is only good for 1 complete year and then you have to renew the plan in order to stay at a lower rate. If she no longer qualifies to be on a lower rate under the Income Base then she needs to reapply under a different plan of the Income Driven like the Repaye or Income Contingent. If that doesn't work then she should inquire with Navient of what her payments would look like if she did a graduated plan or an extended level plan but that would depend on her repayment term that she has left. She can also talk to them in doing a temporary lower repayment plan. She has to negotiate with Navient cause they will make sure she won't default. With the loan being forgiven since the school closed she might not qualify since she already graduated and the name of that forgiveness is the School Closure Loan Discharge Application.

Terrible advice! Don't default on your loans if you can help it, because you can only default once! I do agree with Dave that she should look into options if her school was truly guilty of fraud. If she is in Income Based Repayment (a program Dave does not appear to have studied well), she might be able to get a deferment, but defaulting is an option only if there is no other choice. My advice if the caller reads this is to call IBR, be honest about your situation, and see if you have other options than default. From my experience, they will try to get you a reasonable plan. The problem with Dave's one-size-fits-all advice of "Just Pay Off Your Loans" is he hasn't bothered to research IBR and other programs deeply enough to give good advice. We can live in a fantasy world that everyone is going to pay off their loans, but the reality is that it's probably not mathematically possible for some people. I'm sure someone will reply saying "But she could pay it off if she REALLY wanted to". Good luck with that. Some people just have too high a debt to earnings potential ratio whether you like it or not.
