Given they built a lot of infrastructure to allow this extension, it's kinda weird they didn't save money and time by electrifying it from the outset - but guessing it's just familiarity. The parent company is a freight railroad so guessing they are just sticking with what they know rather than trying to import more advanced practices from Europe or Asia that they might find hard to support locally / in-house on an ongoing basis. Appropriate technology and all that.

Electric locomotives usually cost 20% less than diesel locomotives, their maintenance costs are 25-35% lower, and cost up to 50% less to run. WIth passengers trains these savings are even better than with freight hauls, because the trains must run even when they're not completely loaded, and the costs are the same. The Paxman Valenta was a more reliable engine than these Cummins diesels are proving to be especially in long distance continuous running service. A small high revving engine isn't going to be as reliable as a larger slower revving engine when applied to the sort of long distance routes common in the US.
@mrvwbug4423
@mrvwbug4423 5 ай бұрын
@@emilkarpoThe Cummins engine on the Charger is considerably bigger than the Paxman engines from the HSTs. The Charger uses a 95 liter V16 that revs lower than the HST engine, but produces nearly double the power. The HSTs used a 78 liter engine regardless if they were Paxman or MTU powered. The HST still holds the world speed record for diesel locomotives, but if you removed the limiters on the Chargers they would almost certainly be able to top 150mph.

Speed isn't everything you know, efficiency really is. It would cost a lot more money to electrify that whole line, and really not for that much benefit. What really matters is if it can beat cars and planes, which 125 mph is plenty fast enough to do so. Think about it this way: the Concorde could go over Mach 2, yet today no passenger planes go over Mach 1. Why is that? It's because its unecomical. Flying a plane at Mach 2 expends much more fuel per mile than flying below Mach 1. Therefore, the only place where the Concorde was somewhat economically viable was for wealthy business travelers crossing the Atlantic. Additionally, they couldn't fly over populated areas anyways because of the sonic booms. Very similar situation with Brightline. To electrify the system, ticket prices would need to be higher due to the increased construction costs, making people less likely to use it. The only people that would be using it would be wealthy business travelers, similar to the Concorde. However in Florida, that doesn't really make sense because most of those travelers would be locals and tourists, not wealthy business travelers. Additionally, Florida's climate is a huge factor as well, as the humidity and frequent storms would wreak havoc on the electric infrastructure, driving up the costs even more. Maybe in the future when they've been collecting revenue for decades they might have the funds to electrify the line, but of course you still have the expensive maintenance, so I doubt it. In short, let's not have the perfect be the enemy of the good here.

These are 2 + 4 diesel sets. On June 12 1973 a British Rail InterCity 125 2 + 5 diesel set broke the world speed record for a diesel train at 143.2 mph and 14 years later set the still-standing record for a diesel train, again at 148 mph. These were absolute beasts of diesel trains that started service in 1975 and served for 45 years.

The HSTs are still in service, though only with ScotRail these days. If you removed the limiters from the Chargers they would almost certainly be able to top 150mph. The Chargers get to their normal 125mph service speed a LOT faster than any class 43 could ever dream of though. Though they still can't touch electrics for power, at the end of the day the Charger's electric powered brother, the ACS-64 has double the power output (8600hp vs 4400hp for the most powerful Charger variant)

The EMD F125 used by Metrolink in LA is very comparable in performance, to the point where you could split hairs between the two. Siemens has just done a better job selling their locomotives haha. I would also add that the Charger is an exclusively North American design, though it is loosely based on the Vectron and ACS-64 electric locomotives. The speed is totally fine, 130 mph ( 200 km/h ) is the speed limit for many high speed trains even in Germany. Problem I see is that the tracks aren't electrified. One of the benefits of trains should be sustainable travel because of electrification, yet with diesel trains at that speed, if the train isn't fully loaded it could have a worse impact on the environment than just having cars. Problems of privatized infrastructure... 😅😅

These diesel electric engines are more efficient than a single SUV from less than a decade ago. Taking those would be travelers off the road and onto a train that carries more people is better than every one of those people taking their own gas guzzling car instead.

Electrification would also come down the line. It doesn’t make financial sense in South Florida as we have constant hurricanes and the upfront cost alone to build this was already in the billions. It’s a trade-off you have to make in order to get something.

Beautiful and fun. For one trip probably. Who is this even for? Even in 2023, rail will not work here because we have these things called planes and cars. More importantly, we have too much distance between places we want to go. This will just end up being an expensive toy for seniors with extra time and who appreciate the slower pace. Goodie for them.

Yes. For the initial setup the Orlando extension is single tracked. However, the corridor is intended to eventually be double tracked (bridge pillars are oversized to accept new spans later on etc.) The project also included double tracking and upgrades along the sections with Florida East Coast (FEC), so not an oversight, just a cost saving measure until demand warrants the second mainline.

I can understand why you in the US are reluctant to use catenary railway systems, I think it is far more expensive and besides you have enough oil to "feed" these locomotives, however why not implement hybrid systems in which batteries can partially be recharged at stations or when decelerating and braking?. It would be more efficient and sustanaible from my point of view

Because batteries are heavier than a diesel generator. There is no benefit to use a battery electric locomotive over diesel-electric. The only reason to put a battery on a train is if it's electric to begin with and you're trying to extend its range without building out the infrastructure. Florida has zero electrification.
