Great video...That stone knapped nicely.... LOL, but seriously - It really struck a note with me when you started to talk about "Luck" .... I think as knappers, sometimes we get caught up in quantifying our progress based solely on the results of our flakes versus what we expected for a flake. While this is obviously a component of evaluating our skillset, it leaves so much unmeasurable data out of the equation. There's something in my lizard brain that just want's to take that flake, when I know it's not a perfect platform, or there is chatter in the way. But I somehow still know that there's a good chance I can still get that flake I'm looking for. Hard to explain, but you summed it up perfectly.

Also one question. Have you ever worn ear plugs. I’ve noticed that god damn some flint really rings when you smash it.

Saludos.

What I learned: Good flint knappers, with all their luck, should be playing the lottery. Me: Well. I'll probably still take a swing at the lottery too. It's a billion dollar platform at the moment afterall. Maybe I'll get lucky this time! 😁

26:20 isn't luck a way to add the stone's peculiarities into the process? Because I am not sure the "old guys" understood sheer forces and hertzian cones the way we do.

I don't bury them. They used to bury them back in the day. For safe keeping.

I use the term "intended platform" with percussion. I know where I intend to hit. I see you above center a lot early in like me driving thicker reduction flakes. A point you may consider in your instruction is the when and why of that. Most info is always below center no matter what and that greatly hindered me until John Tuttle asked me why not. He grabbed a piece and hit it above center and cleared a whole turtleback in one lick. Major turning point for me early on along with finger pressure in the line of travel during reduction.
