Keeping lifeboats and their release and retrieval systems well maintained and holding regular drills ensures that systems, equipment and personnel are best prepared in the event of an emergency. This three part series covers the requirements of the SOLAS Convention for the maintenance and drills associated with lifeboat release and retrieval systems (LRRS). It demonstrates the procedures for safely operating the systems most commonly found on merchant ships today.
This part covers the SOLAS requirements that entered into force in January 2013 including LRRS safety, design criteria for hook release mechanisms and use of hydrostatic release units.
