Many years ago as an early teen, I made some picks out of hacksaw blades. Was a LOT of work...but I still have a few of them. Over 45 years ago.

Just returning to the sport from the early eighties, back in those preinternet days I used to make pick tips to fit an exacto knife handle. I used lawn mower pull return spool steel for the picks. It was hard spring steel and worked great.

Take a sponge and cut a slit in one end edge, like you're making a pocket inside the sponge about an inch or two deep, then soak the sponge in water. You can stop every so often and slide the sponge over the metal piece to quickly cool it off. The wet sponge is cool enough to quench it quickly, without having to remove the metal from the vise to dunk it. You can do it the quick and dirty way by using a wet paper towel folded over a few times to make a thick pad, and just wrap it around the hot metal to quench it.

I'm still new to making picks, but I've found that I can use 1/8 inch soldering wire hammered flat to cut and shape templates. Then I can take the templates and copy them onto a old bandsaw blade and cut them out with a grinder or cut-off tool to make even the trickiest of pick shapes. They aren't the fanciest but they are flexible and hold up really well. I also used your tip about the micarta to make handles and am really impressed with the way they turn out. Thanks for all the info on everything locksport.

Nice addition to your quickpick guide Bill. Those handles are called D-Handles here in Australia and a great find. Taking something meant for something else and turning it into a fine hand tool. That's Great DIY and another item most people will find easy to locate, even if they have to disassemble there kitchen.

If you keep your Dremel grinding up close to the vise, the vise will act like a heat sink and pull heat off your work piece, so maybe move the stock in out out and stay close to the vise. I build guitars, mandolins, violins, & guitar amplifiers, & lots of other electronics projects, and even pliers will pull enough heat off something to slow down melting solder with a soldering pencil. We even use little aluminum clips as heat sinks to protect some components that do not like heat, from the heat of soldering. I also work on pianos, so music wire has always been very close at hand. I have a couple friends who make everything from guns to Caribbean steel drums, and we have all learned a lot about heat treating different metals, and ruining different metals with heat.

Never cut steel with your good lineman pliers it will mess up the cutting edge. Cut copper or aluminum only. For cutting steel wire use pliers or side cutters you don't mind messing up.

I have been using wind screen wiper inserts I have found laying around on the streets, to make picks, since long before I figured out where they were coming from- I thought it was manna from heaven!) But they inserts I find on our Australian streets are completely different; they are about 15cm long x 2mm wide x thin enough to make good picks. Do we have different wiper blades out here?

@1SmokedTurkey19 жыл бұрын
Is it as easy to work (drill/tap/shape/etc.) with stainless steel handles as it is with brass? I've been looking around for a local store that sells brass rods but no luck, so far. Also, how do you go about straightening the music wire? I'm assuming it will be curved once you cut it from the spool.

@allthingssilver76354 жыл бұрын
Maybe you could also make a tip using a small diameter Allen wrench? Seeing the music wire after you bent it kind of resembled a fallen wrench to me. You would just need to round the edges and grind the flag part down to make it flat. Not sure if that would work or not, just an idea. And if you dont round off the end that goes into the handle of the Allen wrench the set screw would have a flat side to lock down onto.
@mattek519 Жыл бұрын
Allen wrenches are too weak. I tried using them as tension rods and they twisted like a soft noodle
@mikepiazza20009 жыл бұрын
Just wondering, since you recommend .015-.031 for most picks, would .05 wire only work for specific locks with a lot of clearance? Or does the fact that the wire is rounded make up for the excess width? I wanted to try making some wire picks but was a bit confused as to what diameter/range of diameters would be appropriate. P.S. The handles youve made are awesome. I'll definitely have to make a bronze one similar to your design!

What about automotive feeler gauges, they come on something just like the covert companion, this blades to draw out the pic you want and its numbered so i can choose whether i want a certian pic .007-.025 quick and easy, use tin snips to cut out close to your template u drew and then a dremel to finish it. My issue is Im just starting the hobby and even after ordering some cheap pic sets and some recommended, i find it still really hard to get it to work. 25 years as an auto technician, feelin in my finger tips arent that great , feeling correct tension is even worse...but as i watching watching videos where key way space was super tight, instantly i remember feeler gauges are number, come in a handy little carrier and has the room on the blades to draw and customize each pic u want
