BODYWORK/TRIM
Commissioned by its current owner, and titled as a 1970 Volkswagen convertible, this super slick roadster started life at North Hollywood, California's JPS Motorsports. Driven only 686 miles since its mid-2015 debut, the car wears slick, steel-reinforced fiberglass that mixes impressive fit and finish with rich Carmona Red Metallic 2-stage. A fresh windshield, factory-accurate trim and a color-keyed canvas roof accent that striking pigment. New marker lamps, modern taillights, small mirrors and H4 halogen headlights make sure everyone stays safe. And overall, this custom rolls as a divine dichotomy of grandiose curves and subtle detailing.
ENGINE
Spec'd and built by JPS Motorsports, this roadster's fuel injected, 2.5 liter Subaru EJ25 is a pleasant fusion of vintage boxer feel and snappy, modern performance. Raise the hatch and a small reusable filter element leads the eye to a polished Hitachi throttle body. Opposite that body, pliable V-belts spin a modern AC compressor and polished alternator. A coated manifold perfectly complements polished cooling components. EMS Stinger engine control makes sure everything plays well together. And there's even a billet, ØN*OUTBACKØN* branded dipstick that's, well, out back. Aesthetically, the engine bay is clean, road ready and virtually flawless. And the low-profile motor fires instantly and idles with a typical boxer gait.
DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION
One of the best things about buying a high quality replica is the modern hardware underneath. Fitted with new KYB Gas-A-Just shocks and sturdy sway bars, this roadster's fully reconditioned Volkswagen chassis is fully sorted and ready to pound the pavement. Under the engine, a tough Rancho Pro Street 4-speed has been specially geared for this application. Those gears are countered by four modern calipers, which utilize a dual master cylinder to squeeze four vented discs. There's a custom-tuned exhaust that, thanks to a polished muffler, sounds great. And power meets the pavement through chrome, original-style wheels, which twist 185/65R15 Falken Sinceras around smooth MQQN hubcaps.
INTERIOR
Roadster cockpits have always been stylish and simple, and one look inside this custom's Deluxe Interior reveals just how serious the car's aspirations are when it comes to being driver-focused. Replica seats stretch tight Saddle leather under modern, 3-point safety belts. In front of those seats, a 2-tone dash founds classy, original-style telemetry above a small power outlet, modern Kenwood audio and controls for the aforementioned heat and air conditioning. Below that dash, clean carpet and high quality sound suppression center a booted e-brake behind a small shifter. And the driver feels the asphalt through a polished steering wheel, which twists an authentic wood rim around a timeless Porsche logo.

I've had both, "real" and re-creation 356 Speedsters. The re-creation is more fun to drive as my nerves on not on fire waiting for some idiot to run into me. I purchased a new 77 911S Targa. Approached by another Porsche owner to join the PCA, & drove to the venue where the meeting was being held. Entering the parking lot, I spotted a number of cars on jack stands, wheels off with the owners cleaning the wheel wells, suspension and brake calipers. At that point, I continued thru the parking lot and went for a drive. Since then, I've avoided those groups as the car was purchased to enjoy in a different manner. To each his own!
