I was incarcerated for 11 years and taught myself some programming from books alone. When I got out, I got a BS in CS. I've been working at a small company doing an IT related job, but it's beneath my actual skillset. Do you have any advice for someone who screwed up when they were young ( I was a teen at the time of the conviction) who would like to establish themselves as a developer? It's now been over 20 years since the incident and I've had no further legal issues.
@DorianDevelops
@DorianDevelops 2 жыл бұрын
I was lucky that all my arrests happened when I was a juvenile and I didn't get arrested after I turned 18. So all my stuff doesn't come up in a background check. I'm assuming that you have your records sealed but even with that things are still likely to come up in bg checks. I'm honestly not sure what the best thing for you to do would be. Maybe into companies that hire people with records, I know there's an organization call Underdog Devs who help people with criminal records find dev jobs. Maybe they have a list of companies they work with to get people hired in tech. Since you have a CS degree and have been in the industry for a while you could reach out to them and see if you can work something out. I know they're always looking for mentors. Another option might be going into business for yourself or creating content. Seems like you have an interesting story and sharing that could help people an give you new opportunities. Good luck!
@Asafo87
@Asafo87 2 жыл бұрын
Richie, most criminal background checks only check the last 7 years from the hire date (e.g. If you accepted a job offer in 2022, the BG check would only check your criminal history between 2015-2022). Since your last arrest was 20+ years ago, I would say you have pretty much nothing to worry about :)

Squirrel mode. Monk life. Drastic saving mode. Pile up a nut of F-U emergency cash. Now you're living minimal. Start applying at other companies. Once the fishing pope starts getting tugged, ask your employer about dev opportunities internally. Now you got the juice.

My story is extremely odd in the department of raises. I'm still working at my first place that I've now worked for almost 2 years at this point. Like you I started at 60k salary, later on learned that I could've negotiated for more but I really wanted a job at the time, as it was literally double what I was making at the time. Around the year mark, I was Giving straight up an 25% increase with a promotion over to a mid level developer, then a month later I also received a cost of living adjustment to 89k, so in 1 year I've nearly increased my salary by 50%. Fast forward to recently, they've had me do a lot of shit on my team recently that was really what you'd expect from a senior engineer. I was essentially for the last year forced to be the lead for my team as a mid level engineer leading 2 other people that were seniors mainly because they didn't want to work, so me and my coworker essentially carried the bulk of that work. Due to attrition and my aggression, I received initially an increase to 100k flat, but with me doing all that work I asked my manager to promote me to senior engineer. After he was confused (because he assumed I already was one) and talking with people on the inside, I received the promotion and now am paid 118k, meaning I've nearly doubled my salary from when I started working there and have quadrupled my salary effectively in 3 years working at a crappy job. Which is cool for me because the job has a unique opportunity that I've been promised in getting long term that will exponentially increase my hireability as an engineer which is working in their devops team, and yes I have reason to believe I'll get it because I'm already doing some of that work while working there as a side piece. This is with it all being fully remote. Even with all that in place I'm still looking to now make sure I'm learning new skills towards where I want to go long term. which will more than likely be working with cloud/microservice software or automation, as I just think that market has a lot of opportunity as well as good money in that. Talks like these are really important because people don't really teach you how important it is to negotiate as well as to inform people what you potentially can make so they don't accept less.

@@TFDusk Great story. I can totally get it, as I did something similar but with much less money involved. Still, I am doing ok as a high school dropout, being jack of all trades and working remotely. However, I am becoming increasingly restless and I want to get into programming as I feel like it would come so naturally to me. I concluded this from learning some Python and JS, but also because I am obsessed with building complex spreadsheets from the ground up, using a ton of IF/AND/OR formulas and in general being obsessed with numbers and math . I just have a hard time starting as I can't figure out what will be relevant by the time I learn enough to be employable. Which language do you specialize in? Should I continue learning Python? I enjoy challenges and exploring the unknown. Should I instead try learning something harder?

Awesome Video! I just started my first fully remote Web Dev job in May, also a 9th grade dropout. I took an offer for 40k a year with a monthly bonus. It's a custom wordpress site so I am mainly working with HTML, CSS and occassionally touch PHP and Javascript. We also use foundations framework. I am the only developer on the team other than a contractor that can answer questions as I go. She is very helpful but I sure wish I had a senior developer to learn from. I am still working here but I am for sure looking for another job that I can work with a team and learn from. Also $40k in 2022 is very low!

Being in this frat give me connections with people who get offers at big tech companies for internships and return offers, and also you’ll have connections with people who were in your frat and have already graduated and work for big tech companies. As someone who works for a faang company, fulfillment is definitely team dependent. I work on a team that allows me to gain knowledge and understanding of my weaker areas while getting paid a ludicrous amount to do so. I’m working on a blocker for one of my more ambitious personal projects, and for me that’s where I find fulfillment the growth and learning while I’m there. The pay and security is also a huge plus, and honestly the worklife balance is also really good.. again team dependent in large companies though.

I would definitely take that 130 at year 5 for sure. I hate to be leaving education because I love my kids and I worry about our future as a country a lot, but I gotta take care of me for once in my life. Thanks for the breakdown of the journey.

A 9th grade drop out with a GED is exactly what I am and wanting to break into the developer industry. Got a basic understanding of HTML and CSS but no work to show for it (yet) and my area doesn't really have any tech jobs so I honestly feel like I'm stuck. Either way right now I feel the best thing I can do is build the best basic web site I can, put it out there and see who bites.

Captain Kidd, you need to build some projects, and one project needs to be your portfolio website, where you list your projects for visibility. After having these, you apply to jobs and if you have a couple of nice projects and a portfolio website, you are hire-able. Good luck, and don't forget to aim for betterment every day!

Don't feel bad about not getting the top salary on the first job it happens what's really important is that you get in. I've also seen so many people that come in with this mentality that they need 100k on their first job with no experience and then they miss the opportunity. I agree with Dorian he probably could of got 60k on his first job but that's like 5k more than their max... where people really f&ck up is asking 50k or 100k above their max with no experience. Once you have experience you can definitely ask for whatever you want
@DorianDevelops

I totally agree that first job is for experience. Get in, get experience, get paid more at the next job. There's just always the what if but either way it worked out for me and at the end of the day 5-10k more isn't really life changing. I always found it funny that people set such a crazy high bar for pay at their first job. It's almost like they set it that high to have an excuse to give up. "Guess I'll quit since I can't make 200k after watching one tutorial and studying for a week" 😅

Ignore them, its usually the mediocre people making 40,000 annually who put others down or make their accomplishments seem futile. Not to be a negative Nancy, but your experience at your second job is IMO, more of an exception than the norm. $80k a year for a dev job that focuses almost exclusively on HTML & CSS for someone self-taught & only 1 year of pro experience is incredible. I'm in the market for a HTML, CSS & JavaScript position but I find very few focusing exclusively on those skills. Most web dev jobs I've seen expect you to be working in every framework ever conceived, and despite the position being front end, they want you to have dabbled in JSON, Node, MySQL, etc.

Anyone got any advice on going the path? I AM in school, got my major to be C.S but sometimes it feels like with all of the "filler" classes they give ya, it becomes too much. Lol.. I've done all of the pre reqs, I took this path 'cause it seemed like the most sure way to build a SOLID foundation, having that papper lets them know "hey, he knows what tf he's doing." But ofc, I'm not that learned, sometimes it feels like all of these other things I'm learning for just general education gets in the way. When the heck Am I gonna be using chemistry for front end development? This was an awesome watch dorian.

People are boxed into the NYC/Silicon Valley world. Making 80k living outside of those overpriced messes is better than making 200k living in San Fran. And if you move to Europe, to a cheap country like Spain? Then 80k there is like making 600k in San Fran. And as someone who has lived in NYC, LA, San Fran and now Madrid and München, I know which one has the better quality of life. Like Big Boi said on ATLiens "It's not what you make but how much you spend" P.S. Not of that is even factoring in the level of grunt work as well as inefficient overwork that comes with working in those overhyped MAANG companies. In other places overwork is viewed as a failed business model. Which it is. Oh! You get stock options? Cool, but not really 'cause you have to work for 3 years to really get them and it's rare for people to make it beyond 1 year. Etc, etc.
