The radio jammers could be used as RF/microwave noise generators for radio design. It's also the lowest bidder that signs a contract to mass produce it exactly how the government wants it. I mean, I don't see Lockheed making trash aircraft out of spare Chinese parts from a wholesaler. I've also never seen anyone anywhere take the highest bidder for anything. Being in government work for 10 years I have heard this joke a million times, but if anything the government usually overpays for what's already an overpriced company or brand. Unless you're talking about skilcraft pens and staples, we generally use quality companies to make quality stuff. If anything we wind up wasting money on really awesome stuff that is absolutely unnecessary for absolutely no reason than to spend the rest of the fiscal years money so that you can carry that budget over to the next year.

@@ishid_anfarded_king It usually is a gimmick and a lie, but what does "work" mean? If you're taking your 4X4 to pick up the kids, the civilian model is superior, but if you're going to do some serious off roading then the "military grade" is likely the better way to go (assuming it's available for sale and not just, as you say, a sales gimmick).

I will say though, I did like their initial ambition and goal, plus their assembly for only $9, even if there was plenty of initial issues like manufacturing, cheap parts, and bugs back then. Now that they went under and the prices of an inventory company are asking reach $30+ it would be silly to buy it for new prototyping, and you'd only buy one for replacement of an existing board or your lazy. Actually, the card skimmer WOULD work with bank cards in the US. Europe uses proper chip-and-PIN, in which the card's data cannot be read unless the reader sends the PIN to the card (which is entered on the reader by the user). The US implementation is pure theatre, it doesn't actually require the PIN, which is why you can use NFC on a card to pay for something cheap (varies, but usually anything under 10 USD, sometimes under 20) and not be prompted for PIN or a signature, yet the transaction goes through. The PIN/signature is purely for the store's security, in case you try to do a charge-back.
@ThePandafriend2 жыл бұрын
You can also unlock that in Europe, but it still doesn't allow infinite charges and is blocked after a certain amount. It's pretty insane that they use RFID chips for security applications. Those things are identification tools, not security devices.
@sporkwitch2 жыл бұрын
@@ThePandafriend my understanding of the formal European standard was that it was an interrogatory process, requiring the reader to send the PIN to get the other device to respond with the requested info. Such a system is sufficiently secure, provided it has a reasonable lockout. For example, yubikey will refuse any further PIN entry attempts after three consecutive failures, and wipe itself after 3 consecutive PUK entry failures; unless someone got really lucky or your choice of pin or PUK sucked, this is sufficiently secure for nearly any security application. Been a bit since I went over the current formal stuff from CISA and DISA, but it should also meet requirements for NIPR use as well.
@sporkwitch2 жыл бұрын
@@minniebeth disappointing and baffling if so. Why would they lower the standard to something that's not secure at all? More likely I was mistaken about Europe ever having done proper chip and PIN, and instead it's always been theatre, with the chip being the same as the magstripe and totally nonsecure. It's trivial to do right, I don't understand why they don't. My yubikey does it right, and it's literally the same technology.

The usb drive wiper is very easy to make with any cheap usb flash stick, a command line wipe utility, and a command line script that activates the program after the drive's been inserted. That's just one of the reasons you want to turn off any automatic open/start behaviour for sticks and external drives. The bigger issue are viruses that spread that way.

Why would the RedKey file eraser be banned? Is absence of data considered evidence of destroyed evidence? That sounds like something you'd see in a satire of a police state. Or is it because it can be used for malicious purposes, by destroying data of computers you don't own?
@GrimeSpreeStudios Жыл бұрын
probally both but also pedophiles and dark net drug dealers can erase any evidence
@Plutonia001 Жыл бұрын
@@GrimeSpreeStudios Businesses and private individuals need to be able to erase personal or business-related data from hardware when they upgrade and sell their older stuff. Making it mandatory to retain all of that data would expose people and businesses to malicious activity in a way that's completely disproportionate to the benefit of law enforcement being able to put perverts and non-violent controlled substance offenders into jail. It's trivially easy to recover "deleted" files from for example the temp file hard drive of a photo copier. All you need is a basic distribution of Linux. There have been cases where companies have been blackmailed using sensitive data that a buyer of their former copy machines extracted from the hardware. Legally preventing the destruction of that kind of data just so you'd have an easier time putting ganja-grower Greg behind bars is like treating a migraine with a head amputation.

$250 is a great price for that electric lockpick. But better is $10. A couple years ago, I saw a YT vid on how to make one with a $10 electric toothbrush and I thought pffft, no effing way. Of course, I tried it myself out of geek curiosity. Well, in the past year, I have used it to help two of my neighbors back into their own apartments after they locked themselves out. It's easy as it looks. The toothbrush doesn't oscillate at as high a frequency so it can take a while longer (up to a minute or so), but it eventually works. (You want one with a metal shaft that runs up the neck and you can't tell by looking, so take a small magnet with you to the store to the toothbrush aisle and see if it attracts to the neck of the toothbrush. You'll eventually find an electric toothbrush with a steel shaft in it. That's the one you want.)

The red/blue light devices used by other than authorized persons can get you into a whopping amount of trouble, same with monkeying with registration tags visibility and using wrong tags. I'm going to say it's been 25 years ago, but a bar customer had a digital watch he could control not only the television but the tuning box, about 10 years ago I had a HTC 1 that had infra-red built in. NFC devices that your phone can pick up have been around for years, I had a routine when I touched my custom tag in the car do specific things, then I had another one set up for home, the devices that store a number recognizable by NFC vary from stickers, ink pens and keychains... there is no unimaginable thing.
@pontiacg44510 ай бұрын
The original PSP had infared built in, and using custom firmware you could run homebrew and control stuff with it. Before that there were palm pilots or maybe ipaq PDAs which also had similar features. I had both at some point in time, like 20 years ago now.

@@NoctisMotus actually, it looks like one that I bought although that’s more heavy duty than the one I bought but it looks a lot like it and yeah I did use it for it and I was not disappointed. Depends what kind of drill you’re looking for. So you’ve tried it I assume and no it can’t be used as a drill because if that’s the case, I’d really be interested in knowing in which case thanks for telling me because I bought one that was similar to that and yeah I could use it as a drill among other things has to do with the little thingamabob at the very end I don’t know the word for it right now and I am using voice to text which doesn’t always put things away. I want it to my hands are not working very well. I got the one word in there which I had to correct which was thing a my Bob I am right now and didn’t even write it right when I broke it apart so. But obviously if you’ve tried it and you can’t use it for that thanks very much at least I know it won’t double. I have one that actually doubles, and I found it very useful, one was definitely better than the other don’t go there
@safiremorningstar2 жыл бұрын
@@NoctisMotus one more thing I’ll add to whatever already written to you about. There are a lot of different ones like the one you see there and it all depends on what you put at the end most of them have a slot you can put in other tools that will fit if you’re lucky enough to get ones that have that option, I got one that had that option. I did use it to pick a lock. I had some thing that was locked that I couldn’t get unlocked and I did not wanna pay an arm and a leg because that’s what it cost around here to get a locksmith to open it for me, and then once he fixes it, you have to get any logging done. Just don’t go there specially, since of the kind of like it was and what happened I want to go there, so yeah I bought that tool because it was advertised as being a way to pick a lock among other things, didn’t tell you what the other things were, but based on the size and what not and the tools I already had a decided to try it with something else that I had turned out it worked better than the thing I bought, which was designed as a proper drill. My hands are on what they used to be so I wanted some thing that was easier to manage then the proper drill that I have, I hope that makes sense to you. I am using voice to text and I have no idea what it’s gonna write down. Sometimes it makes sense and sometimes it doesn’t in my eyes or what they used to be like my eyes are really really bad at the moment so you don’t have to get Snyder snippy when you make a comment just saying if it doesn’t work it doesn’t work

You could consider getting an "old" used Samsung Galaxy S5. Super durable, Wifi, Bluetooth, Infrared (yes, really!), NFC, high resolution touchscreen, good battery, microphone, camera, etc. all out of the box compared to rather low spec "tinkerer devices" like this or Raspberry Pi. It's a breeze to root and flash open systems like LineageOS (probably stick to an older version, since permissions/security on newer Androids (10 +, I think) are getting increasingly restrictive). With chroot you can run a standard Linux like Debian/Ubuntu or even Kali Linux ontop of that without sacrificing performance. Hardware hacking is not really an option of course but with a cheap adapter you can hook up USB devices (drivers may be limited though). In the end, it depends on how much "openness" or easy low level access you need.
