While just simply having less things certainly helps ...I think what really is important is having only the things that you need and the things that you actually use or which provide value to your life on a regular basis. there is a paradigm shift that happens to you mentally when you start making these decisions, and getting real about it, that not only changes the way your home looks and operates but it changes the way you go about life from that point on. your priorities shift, your habits change , it can even affect the way you deal with other people in relationships because you start to see what it is an emotional attachment or an addiction versus something that is actually beneficial to you. People have a incredible ability to Bear stress , regardless of where that stress comes from, and once you get the feeling of what it's like to have that stress taken off of you it changes you.

I live this struggle!! It's especially challenging living in a tiny house that has minimal storage. I have to be really good at going through and recycling the mail although because a pile will magically appear that I constantly shift around until I make time to go through it. The trunk tip and the tray insight were golden. Everything in a place and a place for everything--so true. Kitty, I LOVED this! Thank you for taking time to share these tips!

My husband and I are now empty nesters, expecting grandchild #4! But, when our sons were in high school, I read an article about designating "no clutter" zones in your home. So, that's what we did. The no clutter areas included the kitchen counters and table, the dining room, and the front /guest bathroom. My sons were very busy during high school, and made high grades. So, I did not look at their rooms until the weekends. (Not every weekend) But, they had to completely clean their rooms several times a semester. Plus, Saturday morning was cleaning day, and they usually had chores to do outside in the yard. The main thing I wanted is to have a family room where you could kick your shoes off, eat some popcorn, play video games etc. I hate the "only eat in the kitchen" rule. My husband's house growing up was like a museum, no where to just relax and have friends over, so our great room philosophy came from that!

EMF Minimalist True. I used to have loads more piles around my home than I do now and for me four other things also helped: 1. Making sure everything had home that made sense and was quick & easy to put away - eg learning kon Mari style of folding & organizing 2. Be decisive and put somehing away if it prob takes shorter time than imagined. For me it for eg. Meant Not creating a pile of clothes worn once & maybe tomorrow: throwing it in the laundry bin directly or hanging it up on a hanger on the curtains bar and Truly deciding the day after. For me clothes got forgotten underneath one another before as Well ss me feeling to lazy to deal with it directly. 3. It doesn’t have to be perfect but it should be put away. Better put in the right area than piled up and easily forgotten. 4. If delayed putting it away; plan WHEN you Will deal it, in a calender, setting an alarm or whenever.

Some interesting tips. Thank you. However from a health point of view you actually shouldnt make your bed in the morning. It traps in your sweat, skin cells and dust mites (which thrive in the moisture of your sweat and feed off the skin cells). It becomes a haven for allergens and is certainly bad for people with asthma. By keep the bed covers off and leaving the sheets exposed the dust mites will dehydrate, your sweat dries up and the skin cells can escape . I would suggest the better way of dealing with it is to straighten your sheets and to turn the bed clothes down properly so that the sheets are still exposed but it doesnt look a complete mess

Sarah Baker I ‘make my bed’ by straightening the pillows, smoothing the fitted sheet and folding back the covers neatly so it is open and airing but isn’t all messy. I don’t necessarily leave it that way all day, depends how often I go in my room. I like to have the window open while the bed is open too - even if it’s just for 5-10 minutes in the winter (I live in Canada)

Regarding paperless for bills : I went for a lot of years not wanting to give up paper bills because I felt like I would lose control over my finances. I found that the biggest issue for me was automatic billing ..a lot of companies either automatically sign you up for it or push you towards it... but there is always the option not to have it. You may have to actually call and request that they remove you from it. It also takes a good chunk of time to log on to individual websites enter your username and password( hoping that you didn't forget either one of those) and pay things online. instead I use my bank to pay bills electronically, which gives me full control over who gets paid and when and how much ..and it also keeps a record of everything that I've done. regarding paperless for other items: I have seen a lot of people suggest you get a personal scanner and scan everything.. including photographs , tax returns, everything ..into a digital format . I do not suggest that . if it's important you need to keep it in its intact state in a safe location. that mean some place that is fireproof and secure and possibly not in your house... such as a security box at a bank or something. I have lived in areas that are disaster-prone for the last 30 years and you just never know when something bad is going to occur, even if it's something as random as a house fire or robbery which could happen to anyone. if you lose that electronic record you lose it for good. there is the cloud, but the cloud is a security risk... it can be hacked at anytime as we have seen over and over again with all these other supposedly secure digital storage areas for information . if you want the convenience of a digital file by all means make a digital copy, just don't rely on it 100% because you could wind up where I am which is having a large chunk of your family history and photographs be gone forever.

Thanks for these tips, all great, and for getting to the point without waffling on for 10 minutes. I especially like the idea of electronic billing, for paperwork is the bain of my life and what makes my coffee table look a mess for I hate filing it, and resent the storage space taken up by the filing cabinet. Also like the idea of having a donate bin in the car - all too often I find things to purge but they don't make it out of the house.

When my husband and I got married, he wanted the bed made everyday. Since he goes to work earlier that I do, I make the bed. Personally, I think it's a waste of time.....I'm just going to mess it up anyway. However, I do find that when I do make it (even if it is just to make him happy), my day is less 'cluttery'. lol. Great video! I am trying to keep our kitchen countertops as free and clear as possible. We don’t have a pantry in our home. Any suggestions on how to organize kitchen cabinets? What is your set up (for inspiration)? Thanks!
@AcornHillHomestead6 жыл бұрын
I designated a small drawer in the kitchen for all bills, receipts and things need to file and scan. Paper is all out of sight meaning its not nagging me for a month as it sits in a pile. When it comes time to pay the bills (once a month) I pull them all out of the drawer, pay them, shred what we don’t need, scan the support we must keep for taxes, rebates and matching to the credit cards. I deal with it all once a month. We have an office upstairs but having this holding spot has saved our sanity. We always know where things are and paper no longer piles up. The office stays more organized too because we only keep what we absolutely need and there are no piles to contend with. We are both self employed and have a home based business etc so we must keep business related receipts in some sort of file be it electronic or otherwise. Any paper we don’t have to keep gets dealt with as soon as it comes in the house. Little changes can make a big difference in managing a home. Some good info here. 👍🏻

I didn't tell her cuz she felt good giving them to me. If she notices I'll explain she needed to move on never used it or missed it. She always says whatever u end up not using give it back maybe I'll use it one day. Idk plz tell if I'm wrong? I hope I made the right decision in not giving it all back. It runs in the family.
