I am from New Zealand, and due to many tragic circumstances when I was very young, all family ties were lost on my mothers side, and she passed away when I was 18 months old. My father was adopted in a closed adoption, he has passed on now, and I will never know his background as all of his adoptive family are passed on too. One thing I did always know was that my mothers side was “Yugoslavian” As I got older and discovered that “Yugoslavia” no longer exists under that name, I learned that my family was actually from Dalmatia. Recent years I began piecing together what I could of my family tree, and discovered that from my great grandfather, they are all from Drvenik - back at least 4 generations. I remember for many years, I would dream I was floating very quickly above the most clear blue ocean, with many small islands, and sand bars, that were visible beneath the super clear water. I’d never seen ocean so clear, and my brain had seemingly made up this place. But when I started looking into my history, I opened images of Dalmatia, and Drvenik, and realised that I was dreaming for many years, of the Adriatic Sea. I have such a calling “home” I feel like it’s been calling me. Sometimes I watch videos of areas around where my family would have lived, and I actually get teary. The mountains feel so familiar to me. I am 37 now, and I live in Australia. I have been trying to learn Croatian, although it feels very overwhelming, I am trying to pull genetic memory into myself, haha. Anyway, after all of this babbling, I just want to say that watching your videos is a super easy way for me to feel a little closer to a place that calls me, to call it home. I plan to live there one day, but I am scared of the culture differences, and not knowing the language. I will overcome that though. Thanks for your videos! I’ll be watching them all.

My mothers maiden name was Kostanić, and I found that there is local history regarding that name going back many hundreds of years in Drvenik, which I found so amazing. To feel a part of something, when I have never known anything.

Pouring water in wine was a madeleine cookie for me. That reaction in joining, fizziness, and sound of it, it took me back to my childhood. My late dad had his own vineyard, with wine cellar (klet). As a kid, I used to drink a little from the barrels when he wasn't looking. When I grew up and left home, I often came to visit him. We would go to the klet in the evening, sit on the terrace and sip in peace. Complete peace, no conversation. Maybe two sentences all evening. Just listened crickets chirping. I miss that very much.

"gemišt" is actually a German word: "gemischt", which means "mixed". 😄 Funny for me as a German! 😂 But most Germans call this drink "Schorle".
@agnezabarutanski19632 жыл бұрын
Croatia has been a part of the Habsburg empire for almost 400 years so plenty of German loan words are still present in Crotian, especially in the northern regions around Zagreb. Like gemišt, šlafrok, šarafciger, badeancug, beštek, gablec (brunch, from German word for fork). In all honesty, when it comes to tools and car parts, I'm not sure I ever used Croatian word in my entire life. 😂

About Bajadera....it has been priducing for 60y now and it is apsolute perfection
@rikoltilonmartelo3 жыл бұрын
Bajadera today is not so good anymore. I looked ingredients and find the possible reason, they started to use palm oil in production process. That oil smells awfully to me, like somebody left normal oil open on sun for days and it got oxidated and smelly. And that is noticeable in product and ruined the loving taste i remember when i was a kid (25 years ago). What is even worse food companies started to replace or mix palm oil in variety of products thus lowering their quality significantly. For that reason i stopped buying some of them. I don't like the smell of bad oil like burnt or rancid.
@vlm19403 жыл бұрын
When I was a toddler, my mom would make me Čokolino in the bottle, with more milk, and I would drink it before going to sleep. That's probably one of my first memories, heck I can still feel the taste of it in my mouth :)

Ozdravila u tri tjedna a nitko ovdje mi nije vjerovao.

I read a study once, nuticionists wrote it, about cuisine all around the world - what food is universally the best for a human (you know, all around the world people are eating everything [cats, dogs, snakes, spiders, frogs, insects etc.]) and they found out that these & these ingredients are the best (I forgot the technical terms), but you can find them most in: blitva, srdele i maslinovo ulje (cooked beet leaves [chard, manigold], sardines and olive oil). We (Split, Dalmatia) all grown on that 'cause it's poor people everyday food. Now it become expensive to buy it. P. S. Word "melem" is croatian common word for a balm/balsam. Also in phrase for a beautiful girl (as my masculine point of view) is: "melem za oči" - lit. "balsam for the eyes." P. P. S. The kids are adorable as usual. EDIT: For "Napolitanke", when you opened them, the rest you must put in some tupperware (hermetically closed). God bless you and your family! EDIT 2.: Traditional Dubrovnik earings and traditional Split earings, I strongly recommend ;-)

I still haven’t tried Biobaza anything, or if I did, it might have been a random liquid soap, but was never inspired by it. I have also never heard of the baby cream Sun10. Everything else - Jamnica, Bajadera, Čokolino, etc, yes please. I am not fond of wine, so I don’t drink it, but a “gemišt” is definitely a very common drink all around (German: Gemischt). And abc-cheese spread - nor really my taste, I prefer Zdenka spread chease, packed in little triangles. Classic taste (not the new ones “less fat/chili/paprika….”). But you made a good choice of Croatian classics. Vegeta - dry herbs, the one without added taste chemicals - that is my favourite for making fast and easy soups.

What a revelation! Thank you Sarah for showing me how to open the packets of Napolitanke. I've been buying them for years but the new packaging I didn't know had a little string that you pull around the wrapper to neatly open the packet, as you have just shown so simply in your video. Just a tip, I’ve heard you should never pour mineral water in wine when making gemišt, but the opposite, you’re supposed to pour wine into mineral water... it doesn’t really matter but there are people who would get offended if you do it the wrong way
@joemighty14633 жыл бұрын
Simple explanation for that, its actually like a philosophy: If you pour water in the wine you are ruining the wine, but if you pour wine in the water you are actually making water better, thus improving water and not "humiliating" or "disrespecting" or "offending" the wine so to say :D
