I live in zone 9 where the temps are still in the mid-90s, but they typically start to cool down in mid-October. Growing a fall garden for the first time. I only do container gardening and have started my fall garden plan. Started my seedlings on 9/7 for red cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kohlrabi, and 4 varieties of lettuce. Will transplant them around the first week of October. A week ago, direct sowed beets, carrots, red potatoes, radishes, and turnips. Going to direct sow 3 varieties of green beans and 3 varieties of dwarf English peas in about a week since it's still been so hot. I am excited and hoping the cool weather plants will do better than in the spring, because our weather goes from cold to hot very fast. Happy gardening everyone! 🙂

I can grow radishes, but ran out of room. They will have to wait until spring, the same for lettuce. Golden beets taste less earthy than red beets. Currently, I am growing parsnips, carrots, beets, turnips, red cabbage, Dutch Cabbage, Nappa Cabbage, Swiss Chard, Komatsuna, Tatsoi, Yellow Heart Winter Choy, broccoli, cauliflower, broccoli. and Pak Choi in my fall garden. I am still harvesting peppers and strawberries. South of Sylacauga, AL in the country.

Oops!! Also wanted to say I am in Northern Missouri and I am sooooo grateful for those that post about other zones when they are from the south where they can grow almost, anything, year round!! Or at least that’s my understanding of the states on the coast! I could and have been wrong about things many times before. 😂 I say all that about the zone issues because there are ppl in the past that I have just adored and wanted to follow, however, they only talked about southern style planting and all that entailed. I just couldn’t take the time and follow since I am new at a lot of gardening tips!!

Planted my first winter garden last year on dec 1st. Found just a few starts at local nurseries. My neighbors loved it. I only had to cover it 5 times for frost protection. Got an earlier start this year. Planted one 35sq foot bed 2 weeks ago with greens . It’s doing very well. Saving the 2nd bed for a later planting. Also bought a small cold frame for my own start. Fall planting will be from there. I live in zone 8b.

I've harvested small portions of the lettuce and cilantro and have made a salad with my cherry tomatoes I'm growing. just started my fall garden - 10a - Orlando Fl. Transplanted another round of tomatoes, cucumbers and Squash. Planted green beans. Cleaning up my pepper plants I kept alive through our hot humid summer. Hopefully they will start producing again. I was able to grow a Cucuzzi gourd vine this summer. It is covered in squash bugs and aphids but it gave a steady supply of small gourds that I have used in place of zucchini. I'm thinking about letting it grow as a trap crop to keep the bugs on it and give my spaghetti squash and cucumbers a chance to produce.

Zone 8B SC here. Still producing eggplant, peppers, cherry tomatoes. Also I'm waiting for some Candy roaster squash to produce and a second round of Chinese long beans... and I have sweet potatoes I'll be harvesting soon. Pulled out some Cherokee Purple tomatoes that had slowed down and discovered root knot nematode. Will plant garlic where that was later this fall since the garlic isn't bothered by it and plant a bunch of marigolds there later to hopefully kill the nematode. (I also want to transplant some raspberry plants that were growing too close to the tomatoes.) I'm glad I decided to pull it out and not leave the roots for "organic matter" or I might not have discovered the nematode. Thanks for the reminder to get going with winter veggies. Will have to try cilantro and some of the green veggies since it always seems to be too hot for Cilantro any other time of year.

I live in zone 7a, far Northern California. I am still gardening but covering & uncovering things 2x a day. We had several nights of 29 & 30 degrees and even with blanket row covers & tarps, I lost my zucchini, winter squash, tomatillos & a couple peppers. I managed to save 2 peppers (one with flowers on it) by digging them up and moving them indoors into pots. Don't know if they will make it, they look good and the one hasn't dropped it's flowers yet so I am hopeful. They have a sunny window and a grow light so fingers crossed! I still have many of the things on your list growing under row cover. We have one more week of warm weather before another freeze hits so that will probably finish off my tomatoes & potatoes. It's a sad time for me when I have to start pulling things out - I feel like I am displacing a family member. I have spent alot of hours with these plants and nurtured them along so to now have to pull them out is hard to do!

@homersimpson4689Ай бұрын
First off, love the content, on many levels. Second, there are lots of cautions on how our individual areas may vary. I probably should have paid more attention. And for the 3rd thing, well, it's for the viewers. There is a big difference between 9a zone in west coast vs east coast. From what I have experienced here in Charleston SC a 85-87 degree average temperature month, includes a period of 2 weeks with no rain, with heat/humidity advisories for 10 days in the 105-112 degree range. We get 20 degree ranges, you seem to get 10 degree changes, day vs night. My lettuce bolts in April, my basil in early May, neither get sun before noon. Farmers here say "I'm as sure as squash borers in June" to mean they are certain of something. They use the gas that sterilizes the soil each year and pesticides to produce a crop. Without that the borers swarm your squash plants and you will have 4-6 worms per stem and 2-3 on every leaf stem. BT spray and injections, painting with diatomaceous, digging them out.. as a semi retired person that looks at his garden every day, it is hopeless. My advice to East coast gardeners... Tomatoes, cucumbers, basil, beans, sweet potatoes, tromboncino squash and, !!! okra. Tomatoes, start in cups in January, transplant in mid February. They do well here and you will get a good harvest. Basil, really wants to grow here, just seed every 2-3 weeks and pick before it bolts, Cucumbers, plant in april, give them room to climb, it may be a chore to harvest every day. Beans, get them in early and keep planting more every 3-4 weeks for a steady supply. Tromboncino squash, OMG, loves SC weather! I measured plant and fruit growth.. plants grew 9 inches and 1 squash grew 4 inches in 1 day. It was a battle between the cucumber and tromboncino for space on my arched terrace. I have a 10' by 5' garden. Tromboncino have tough solid stems, some squash borers get into the leaves but don't affect them too much. I grow sweet potatoes for fun, they give ground cover and give a small harvest. I also grow ginger that looks very promising this year. 1"nub" planted last year gave 2 8 oz jars of gari. I have 8x plants growing this year with more vigor. Lastly, my okra. This plant loves the heat. 6x Clemson spineless plants gives 5-12 pods per day. I pickle them and put a quart jar into the fridge every 3 days. I waited too late to start the 2nd planting. the 1st are about 6-8 feet high and starting to taper off. The second are 2-3 high and just starting to produce. I can't say for sure.. I tend to believe that letting some vegetables go to seed and saving them to replant in the same area might be an advantage. My tomatoes, okra, beans, basil seem to be more vigorous.
